The influence of cooling rates on the mechanical properties of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass prepared with high rheologicalrate forming (HRRF) was investigated and compared with traditional suction cast methods. Amorphous samples of Zr57Cu-20Ni8Al10Ag5 were prepared in copper molds with different sizes in order to obtain different cooling rates for both HRRFand traditional cast methods. These specimens were subjected to compression experiments, including microhardness testing,X-ray diffraction testing and differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The results indicate that the plasticity of the samplesformed by HRRF are higher than that of the as-cast ones at the same cooling rates, while the microhardness manifests theopposite principle. As the cooling rate increases further, the difference in plasticity further increases between two methods, indicating that the plasticity of metallic glasses is more sensitive to cooling rates during the HRRF process. At the core ofthis phenomenon is the fact that HRRF methods can introduce more free volume into glasses than traditional cast methodswith an elevated cooling rate are able to.
Soy Protein Supplementation Reduces Clinical Indices in Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome
Xi-Mei Zhang,Yun-Bo Zhang,Mei-Hua Chi 연세대학교의과대학 2016 Yonsei medical journal Vol.57 No.3
Purpose: Clinical trials have studied the use of soy protein for treating type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic syndrome (MS). The purpose of this study was to outline evidence on the effects of soy protein supplementation on clinical indices in T2D and MS subjects by performing a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Materials and Methods: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases up to March 2015 for RCTs. Pooled estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by the fixed-and-random-effects model. A total of eleven studies with eleven clinical variables met the inclusion criteria. Results: The meta-analysis showed that fasting plasma glucose (FPG) [weighted mean difference (WMD), -0.207; 95% CI, -0.374 to -0.040; p=0.015], fasting serum insulin (FSI) (WMD, -0.292; 95% CI, -0.496 to -0.088; p=0.005), homeostasis model of assessmentfor insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) (WMD, -0.346; 95% CI, -0.570 to -0.123; p=0.002), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (WMD, -0.230; 95% CI, -0.441 to -0.019; p=0.033), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (WMD, -0.304; 95% CI, -0.461 to -0.148; p=0.000), total cholesterol (TC) (WMD, -0.386; 95% CI, -0.548 to -0.225; p=0.000), and C-reactive protein (CRP) (WMD, -0.510; 95% CI, -0.722 to -0.299; p=0.000) are significant reduced with soy protein supplementation, compared with a placebo control group, in T2D and MS patients. Furthermore, soy protein supplementation for longer duration (≥6 mo) significantly reducedFPG, LDL-C, and CRP, while that for a shorter duration (<6 mo) significantly reduced FSI and HOMA-IR. Conclusion: Soy protein supplementation could be beneficial for FPG, FSI, HOMA-IR, DBP, LDL-C, TC, and CRP control in plasma.
Functional Regulation of Dopamine D₃ Receptor through Interaction with PICK1

PICK1, a PDZ domain-containing protein, is known to increase the reuptake activities of dopamine transporters by increasing their expressions on the cell surface. Here, we report a direct and functional interaction between PICK1 and dopamine D₃ receptors (D₃R), which act as autoreceptors to negatively regulate dopaminergic neurons. PICK1 colocalized with both dopamine D₂ receptor (D₂R) and D₃R in clusters but exerted different functional influences on them. The cell surface expression, agonist affinity, endocytosis, and signaling of D₂R were unaffected by the coexpression of PICK1. On the other hand, the surface expression and tolerance of D₃R were inhibited by the coexpression of PICK1. These findings show that PICK1 exerts multiple effects on D₃R functions.
Two New Flavonoids from Dragon's Blood of Dracaena cambodiana
Mei, Wen-Li,Luo, Ying,Wang, Hui,Shen, Hai-Yan,Zeng, Yan-Bo,Dai, Hao-Fu Korean Chemical Society 2013 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.34 No.6
Phytochemical investigation on dragon's blood of Dracaena cambodiana led to the discovery of two new flavonoid derivatives, cambodianin G (1) and cambodianin H (2). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR techniques and chemical methods. The two compounds were observed to exhibit antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, and compound 1 showed cytotoxicities against K562 and SGC-7901 cell lines.

Based on 42CrMo steel, a steel with a higher C and Ni content is developed for use in large sized bearing rings. The impact energy and hardness of the quenched and tempered steel increase with the quenching temperature, but then decrease when the temperature is above 925 °C. When the temperature is below 925 °C, some larger M23C6-type carbides (with average diameters of 255.6 μm) exist in the quenched and tempered microstructure. The number of carbides is reduced as the quenching temperature increases. At the same time, the fracture modes change from microvoid coalescence and quasi-cleavage to microvoid coalescence. The number of round quasi-cleavage fractures, which are formed around the carbides, decrease as the number of carbides decrease. The existence of larger M23C6-type carbides leads to round quasi-cleavage fractures and decrease the impact energy. The precipitation strengthening of M23C6-type carbides increases the hardness at a quenching temperature of 925 °C.

To isolate novel and useful microbial enzymes from uncultured gastrointestinal microorganisms, a fecal microbial metagenomic library of the pygmy loris was constructed. The library was screened for amylolytic activity, and 8 of 50,000 recombinant clones showed amylolytic activity. Subcloning and sequence analysis of a positive clone led to the identification a novel gene (amyPL) coding for α-amylase. AmyPL was expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) and the purified AmyPL was enzymatically characterized. This study is the first to report the molecular and biochemical characterization of a novel α-amylase from a gastrointestinal metagenomic library.
