Topical Products for Human Hair Regeneration: A Comparative Study on an Animal Model

Background: Hair loss and hair growth is the subject of tremendous amount of research. Objective: This study investigated the efficacy of three chemical treatments used in humans for hair loss, using a rat model of hair regrowth. The products tested were 2% minoxidil, Hairgrow (Dar-Al-Dawa Pharma), Aminexil, Dercos (Vichy Laboratoires), and Kerium, Anti-chute (La Roche-Posay). Methods: Thirty-two adult female Wistar-Bratislava rats were assigned to 4 groups. Two rectangular areas (2×4 cm) were shaved on either sides of the mid dorsal line (left side - control; right side - test area). Group I was treated topically with 2% minoxidil, group II with Aminexil, and group III with Kerium. Each rat received 0. 3 ml of substance applied topically to the shaved dorsal skin every day for 28 days. Rats in group IV served as sham controls receiving no treatment. Hair regrowth was evaluated by trichoscopy (with a dermatoscope), grown hair weight (from a surface area of 1 cm2), and histopathological examination for skin thickness, follicle count, and percentage of anagen induction (morphometric assessment). Results:Treatment with 2% minoxidil significantly induced hair regrowth as assessed by trichoscopy, hair weight examination, and morphometric evaluation. Hair weight examination and morphometric assessment demonstrated the lowest hair growth effect with Aminexil among the tested products. Treatment with Kerium was found to significantly induce hair regrowth (p<0. 05 as compared to the control group). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that hair regrowth efficacy of products recommended for human use is not similar when tested on an animal model.
Endoscopic treatment of upper gastrointestinal postsurgical leaks: a narrative review

Upper gastrointestinal postsurgical leaks are life-threatening conditions with high mortality rates and are one of the most feared com-plications of surgery. Leaks are challenging to manage and often require radiological, endoscopic, or surgical intervention. Steady ad-vancements in interventional endoscopy in recent decades have allowed the development of new endoscopic devices and techniquesthat provide a more effective and minimally invasive therapeutic option compared to surgery. Since there is no consensus regarding themost appropriate therapeutic approach for managing postsurgical leaks, this review aimed to summarize the best available current data. Our discussion specifically focuses on leak diagnosis, treatment aims, comparative endoscopic technique outcomes, and combinedmultimodality approach efficacy.
Patching continuous-time signals using high-gain observers and 3rd order splines

In real-time applications, due to disturbances or problems inherent to the measurement systems, portions of the measured signal are lost or distorted. Thus, in those cases when the control goal is to track measured signals in real-time, the continuity and smoothness of the closed-loop system may be compromised. To minimize this problem, in this work, a method to patch the continuous-time signal is proposed. The approach, based on high-gain observers and third-order splines, allows taking into account not only the initial and the ending points of the missing part of the signal but the corresponding derivatives as well. As a result, a smooth signal is obtained. To illustrate the validity of the approach, a sufficiently complex signal, named the first state of the Lorenz attractor is reconstructed in the numerical experiments.
The Output Regulation Problem for Unmodeled Reference/Disturbance Signals Using High-gain Observers

Based on the regulation theory and high-gain observers, in this paper, a controller for tracking and/or rejecting unmodeled but measurable signals is designed. Considering that the measurable reference/disturbance signals are bounded and smooth, it is proven that the missing dynamical models for such signals can be estimated by high-gain observers of dimensions equal to or greater than one. Then, the corresponding high-gain observers are embedded into an auxiliary system, known as the exosystem, allowing in this way, that the regulation theory can be applied and the new equations to be solved are also given. Because the exosystem is directly constructed from the high-gain observers, the proposed controller is robust in the sense that it is capable of tracking/rejecting any bounded and smooth signal as long as the estimations of the high-gain observers are sufficiently accurate. The existence conditions for such a controller are given, and numerical experiments are used to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

A design procedure to robustly globally stabilize the Planar Vertical Take Off and Landing (PVTOL) around a position by means of bounded control law and without knowledge of the velocities is presented. The methodology is based on the use of saturation functions bounding the thrust and the roll inputs. To this purpose the techniques given in [13]-[14] (making use of the full state) are enriched with the design of an observer for the nominal system. The algorithm is simple and provides global robust convergence to the reference constant signals.
Structural analysis of cracked R.C. members subjected to sustained loads and imposed deformations

A structural analysis of cracked R.C. members under instantaneous or sustained loads and imposed displacements is presented. In the first part of the paper the problem of deriving feasible moment-curvature diagrams for a long term analysis of R.C. sections is approached in an exact way by using the Reduced Relaxation Function Method in state I uncracked and the method suggested by CEB in state II cracked. In both states the analysis of the main parameters governing the problem has shown that it is possible to describe the concrete creep behaviour in an approximate way by using the algebraic formulation connected to the Effective Modulus Method. In this way the calculations become quite simple and can be applied in design practice without introducing significant errors. Referring to continuous beams, the structural analysis is then approached in a general way, applying the Force Method and the Principle of Virtual Works. Finally, considering single members, the structural analysis is performed by means of a graphical procedure based on the application of feasible moment-rotation diagrams which allow to easily solve various structural problems and to point out the most interesting aspects of the long term behaviour of cracked R.C. members with rigid or elastically deformable redundant restraints.
AURKA Gene Variants rs1047972, and rs8173 Are Associated With Breast Cancer

Purpose: Association between variants rs1047972 and rs8173 of the AURKA gene in healthy women and breast cancer (BC) in a Mexican population. Methods: Genomic DNA samples from 409 healthy women and 572 patients with BC were analyzed for variants rs1047972 and rs8173 of the AURKA gene by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Results: TT genotype (odds ratio [OR], 2.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.22–5.11; p = 0.0015) and the T allele (OR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.23–2.12; p = 0.0007) of the rs1047972 variant were associated as risk susceptibility for BC relative to the control group. Contrarily, the GG genotype (OR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.43–0.94; p = 0.029) was associated as a protective factor of susceptibility of BC of the variant rs8173 of the AURKA gene. Differences were observed in the patients with BC who were carriers of the CT genotype of the rs1047972 variant with overweight, obesity, estrogen receptor-positive plus obesity, Ki-67 (≥ 20%) plus history familial positive of cancer; and for variant rs8173 the BC patients who were CG carriers and presented chemotherapy gastric toxicity, hormonal receptor positive plus chemotherapy gastric toxicity, and menopause status plus chemotherapy gastric toxicity (p < 0.05). Two common haplotypes were identified in the study groups: CG and TC genotypes, were associated as a protective and risk factor, respectively (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Variants rs1047972 and rs8173 of the AURKA gene and the TC haplotype were associated as risk susceptibility factors for BC in this population.
