This study investigated children’s and early childhood educators’ perspectives on the impact of a sound amplification system in a preschool setting. The sample included 69 children aged 3-5 years and nine early childhood educators from a preschool in regional Australia. Children completed selfreport booklets, rating how well they could hear in group time situations prior to and after the implementation of a sound amplification system. Early childhood educators completed an adapted version of the Listening Inventory for Education-Revised, rating the children’s hearing and listening. Quantitative analyses indicated that children’s hearing and listening improved, as reported by both educators and children. Qualitative analyses indicated that children and educators felt positive about the sound amplification system, that children could hear other children better, particularly at news time, that it helped children with speech difficulties to be better understood, and that it improved the confidence of the quieter children with speaking in front of the group.
Antecedents and consequences of the disability stigma for frontline employees: A qualitative study

The employment of people with disabilities (PWDs) is an important growing topic in contemporary society. Despite legal protections and increasing awareness of the importance of inclusion and diversity, PWDs still face significant barriers to employment worldwide, particularly in service industries. As hiring PWDs becomes more prevalent, scholars have only recently begun to study consumers’ perceptions of frontline employees (FLEs) with disabilities, especially intellectual disabilities, and their potential to stigmatize FLEs with disabilities. As such, we explore consumers’ perceptions of FLEs with disabilities to understand the attitudes, biases, and behaviors that may influence their interactions with such employees. Using a thematic coding analysis, we develop a framework for understanding the antecedents and consequences of disability stigma for FLEs. Drawing on this framework, we present the results of a qualitative study examining consumer perceptions of FLEs with disabilities working in restaurants, highlighting the key themes that emerged from our analysis. Specifically, we uncover internal influences and customer affect toward PWDs as antecedents to consumers’ perceptions of FLEs with disabilities while consumer behavior and firm actions as consequences. Nevertheless, these matters remain prominent issues for businesses working to create more inclusive and welcoming environments for all customers and employees, regardless of disability status.

systems for electrochemical synthesis and high throughput screening of photoelectrochemi-cal materials were developed and used to prepare tungsten-molybdenum mixed metal oxides, WO3-MoO3. Two-dimen-sional arays (library) of diverse composition were synthesized by automated cathodic electrodeposition on Ti foil sub-strate. Electrolytes were prepared by mixing W-peroxo complex and Mo-peroxo complex. The compositions in filmswere found to strongly depend on the composition of electrolyte, and found to be relatively independent of de-position voltage. The morphology was found to be very homogeneous. The electrodeposited oxides typicaly showedn-type behavior. Automated measurement of photocurent by using a scanning photoelectrochemical cell showed thatmixed oxides showed higher photocatalytic activity than pure tungsten oxide or pure molybdenum oxide. Photoac-titvities of the mixed oxides were strongly dependent on the film composition.
Suppression Subtractive Hybridization Identifies Novel Transcripts in Regenerating Hydra littoralis

Despite considerable interest in the biologic processes of regeneration and stem cell activation, little is known about the genes involved in these transformative events. In a Hydra littoralis model of regeneration, we employed a rapid shotgun suppression subtractive hybridization strategy to identify genes that are uniquely expressed in regenerating tissue. With an adaptor-PCR based technique, 16 candidate transcripts were identified, 15 were confirmed unique to mRNA isolated from hydra undergoing regeneration. Of these, 6 were undescribed in GenBank and allied expressed sequence tag (EST) databases (GenBank + EMBL + DDBJ + PDB and the Hydra EST database). BLAST analysis of these sequences identified remarkably similar sequences in anonymous ESTs found in a wide variety of animal species.

미캘리포니아주의 천소지에서 발생하는 깔따구 유충에 대한 야외 구제실험을 위하여 1974년 5월 24일부터 10월 28일까지 5개월간 로스안젤스에 위치한 10개의 야외실험연못(6.1$\times$11m)을 사용, 각 5개의 임의선택된 연못에 천적 플라나리아 Dugesia dorotocephala(Woodworth)를 300마리의 비율로 투입 처리하였다. 천적투입후 1개월인 6월 24일에는 깔따구 유충의 구제율은 50.4%였고, 7월 24일에는 51.9%의 성적을 얻었다. 8월 7일에 재투입처리로 200마리의 플라나리아를 각 5개의 상기 처리된 연못에 가한 결과, 8월 26일에는 84.2% 9월 28일에는 60.6%, 10월 28일에는 63.7%의 구제율을 보였다. 천적은 야외실험이 끝날때까지 양호한 잠식율을 보였으며, 9월말에는 약 2배의 수적인 증식을 볼 수 있었다. 한편 옥내실험실에서의 깔따구 유충실험의 치사율은 24시간내에 86.7%, 48시간후에는 100%의 성적을 보였다. Degesia dorotocephala(Woodworth) were introduced at the rate of 300 per replicate in 5 shallow 9.1 $\times$ 11m earthern poods at Whittier Narrows, California on May 24th, 1974. By June 24th, 50.6% and July 24th 51.9% chironomid larval control achieved. Two hundred additional Dugesia introduced per replicate on August 7th and August 26th produced 84.2% control on August 26th followed by 60.6% and 63.7% control on Sep. 28th and Oct. 28th, respectively. Dugesia were observed to persist in all treated replicates through the study period; and although exact densities could not be estimated, a doubling of their population appeared to have occurred by the end of September. In a laboratory experiment chironomid larval mortality reached 86.7% 24 hrs. after the Dugesia treatment and 100% in 48 hrs.
Computational Optics Enables Breast Cancer Profiling in Point-of-Care Settings

<P>The global burden of cancer, severe diagnostic bottlenecks in underserved regions, and underfunded health care systems are fueling the need for inexpensive, rapid, and treatment-informative diagnostics. On the basis of advances in computational optics and deep learning, we have developed a low-cost digital system, termed AIDA (artificial intelligence diffraction analysis), for breast cancer diagnosis of fine needle aspirates. Here, we show high accuracy (>90%) in (i) recognizing cells directly from diffraction patterns and (ii) classifying breast cancer types using deep-learning-based analysis of sample aspirates. The image algorithm is fast, enabling cellular analyses at high throughput (∼3 s per 1000 cells), and the unsupervised processing allows use by lower skill health care workers. AIDA can perform quantitative molecular profiling on individual cells, revealing intratumor molecular heterogeneity, and has the potential to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment. The system could be further developed for other cancers and thus find widespread use in global health.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
