Crystal Structure and Polarization Properties of Ferroelectric Bi4−xLaxTi3O12 Single Crystals

Single crystals of ferroelectric Bi4Ti3O12 (BiT) and La-substituted Bi4Ti3O12 (BLT) were grown by using a self-flux method, and the effects of La substitution on the crystal structure, the polarization properties, and the domain structure were investigated. BLT crystals showed a smaller remanent polarization along the a axis compared with BiT, which is in good qualitative agreement with the spontaneous polarization calculated from the structural data determined from the neutron diffraction analysis. La substitution resulted in a decrease in the domain width of 90 degree domains, which is attributed in part to the smaller structural distortion a/b for BLT. It is requested to be evaluated whether environmental change in marine traffic passage by maintenance work affect ship handling, safety, when re-design of traffic passage is planned. In the maintenance work, it is also important to evaluate the change of risk and also benefits. However, in a current evaluation index, it is difficult to evaluate the benefit. The recently developed safety index that is led by employing the Unsafe Ship-handling situations model (US-model) is able to estimate risk level of marine accident in a process of a ship handling. We have already reported the relation of the ratio of 10-3 in harbors (Yokohama, Kobe, and Osaka in Japan) [1]. In this study, we acquired the relation of the ratio between the US value and the marine accident at a narrow waterway; Kurushima Strait in Japan, using a ship handling simulator. And we experimented to estimate a marine accident reduction achieved by the maintenance work of the altered shape of passage.
Development of a walking assist machine using crutches (Composition and basic experiments)

This paper proposes a walking assist machine for people with walking difficulties. It has crutches operated by the user and a wearable mechanism generates motion of the leg and foot relative to the upper body. First, a healthy person’s swing-through walking using axillary crutches was measured and kinematically analyzed. Based on the results, a composition of a walking assist machine using crutches (WAMC) was proposed. An Experimental apparatus of WAMC was designed and built. It realized walking with desired constant step length. And it was clarified that error of the step length decreases its walking stability. Then we investigated the relationship between walking stability and parameters of walking motion by dynamic simulations. The desired parameters were determined through the simulations Sensors and switches which convey user’s intentions to WAMC were also designed and attached to the WAMC.
Electrical conduction properties of La-substituted bismuth titanate single crystals

Single crystals of lanthanum-substituted bismuth titanate were grown by a self-flux method, and electrical conductivities were investigated at high temperatures. Lanthanum substitution suppressed Bi vaporization during annealing and decreased the electrical conductivity in both the a- and c-axes. It is suggested that lanthanum substitution stabilizes the perovskite blocks and hence decreases the concentrations of oxygen vacancies and holes as the conduction carriers. An ab-initio calculation indicated that the formation energy of an oxygen vacancy in the perovskite block is increased by lanthanum substitution, supporting the above experimental results.
