High-density (Bi0:5Na0:5TiO3)0:94(BaTiO3)0:06 (BNBT-6) ceramics were fabricated under varying oxygen partial pressure conditions to develop useful lead-free piezoelectric materials with high mechanical quality factors (Qm). In uence of oxygen partial pressure-controlled sintering on physical properties of BNBT-6 ceramics was investigated. A liquid phase occurred in the sample sintered under logP(O2) = 3.50 atm because part of the Bi, a highly volatile element, evaporated from the sample surface during sintering. The mechanical quality factor, Qm, for the radial vibration mode exhibited a maximum (= 270) at logP(O2) = 3.50 atm that was 1.4 times as large as that of the sample sintered at logP(O2) = 0.12 atm. The temperature coecients of resonant and antiresonant frequencies (TCFfr1 and TCFfa1) of the BNBT-6 sample sintered under logP(O2) = 3.50 atm were almost constant: TCFfr1 = 465 ppm/C for the fundamental resonant frequency and TCFfa1 = 381 ppm/C for the fundamental antiresonant frequency. The current technology produces a substantial improvement in Qm characteristics without lowering other piezoelectric parameters, such as relative permittivity, "r, and electromechanical coupling factors, kp and kt, and can be expected to extend the selectivity of electrode materials used in multilayer ceramic actuators.

High-density (1.x)(Na0.5K0.5)NbO3-xLiTaO3 [(1.x)NKN.xLT] ceramics with x = 0 . 0.2 were successfully fabricated by spark-plasma sintering (SPS). The effect of SPS on the microstructure and the piezoelectric properties of the fabricated NKN-LT ceramics are discussed and compared with those of the same NKN-LT ceramics prepared by conventional mixed-oxide ceramic processing. The morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases for the NKN-LT series was found to be in the vicinity of x = 0.06 . 0.08. The MPB was shifted to the slightly LT-rich side of that previously reported by excess addition of 2.5 mol% K2CO3. The dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the NKN-LT ceramics fabricated by using the SPS process were excellent compared to those for the conventionally prepared sample. The values of "T 33/"0, kp and Pr were 1.9, 1.4 and 2.3 times larger than the values for the conventionally prepared sample, respectively. These improvements in the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the present ceramics are shown to originate from both the slight excess addition of K2CO3 and the particle orientation imparted by SPS.

Background: Local anesthetics often are used in rotator cuff tears as therapeutic tools, although some cases have reported that they have detrimental effects. Neurotropin (NTP) is used widely in Japan as a treatment for various chronic pain conditions and is shown to have protective effects on cartilage and nerve cells. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of NTP against lidocaine-induced cytotoxicity. Methods: Tenocytes from rotator cuff tendons were incubated with lidocaine, NTP, lidocaine with NTP, and a control medium. Cell viability was evaluated using the WST-8 assay. Cell apoptosis was detected via annexin V staining using flow cytometry. The expression of BCL-2 and cytochrome c, which are involved in the intrinsic mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, was evaluated via Western blotting and immunohistochemical staining. Results: In the cell viability assay, lidocaine decreased cell viability in a dose-dependent manner, and NTP did not affect cell viability. Moreover, NTP significantly inhibited the cytotoxic effect of lidocaine. The flow cytometry analysis showed that lidocaine significantly induced apoptosis in tenocytes, and NTP considerably inhibited this lidocaine-induced apoptosis. Western blotting experiments showed that lidocaine decreased the protein expression of BCL-2, and that NTP conserved the expression of BCL-2, even when used with lidocaine. Immunohistochemical staining for cytochrome c showed that 0.1% lidocaine increased cytochrome c-positive cells, and NTP suppressed lidocaine-induced cytochrome c expression. Conclusions: NTP suppresses lidocaine-induced apoptosis of tenocytes by inhibiting the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. Intra-articular/bursal injection of NTP with lidocaine could protect tenocytes in rotator cuff tendons against lidocaine-induced apoptosis.
Application of Impact-Echo Method for Heterogeneous Materials

Heterogeneous materials such as rock cannot be expected to have homogeneity so as to be used as structural materials. For example, in order to test large rocks more than one cubic meter, measures need to be taken against weaknesses such as internal cracks and fracture zones that can easily be overlooked in compressive strength tests. The impact-echo method could be available for evaluating strength and detecting internal defects in-situ concrete component with relatively good accuracy. In this study, measurements using the impact-echo method were carried for several types of rock specimens used at automobile crash safety tasting, and, by comparing the results with compression strength tests, the applicability of the impact-echo method for strength estimation of heterogeneous materials was evaluated. This work was supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number 25420462.
Primary Adenocarcinoma of the Minor Duodenal Papilla

A 70-year-old man was admitted to our institution due to aggravation of blood-sugar level control and because an abdominal CT showed dilatation of the main pancreatic duct. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a flat elevated tumor with central ulceration in the second portion of the duodenum. Subsequent duodenoscopy for a more detailed examination showed that the tumor had originated in the minor duodenal papilla. A biopsy specimen showed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography via the major duodenal papilla revealed a slightly dilated main pancreatic duct and obstruction of the accessory pancreatic duct. Endoscopic ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic mass in the minor duodenal papilla with retention of the muscularis propria of the duodenum. These findings suggest that the tumor existed only to a limited extent in the minor duodenal papilla, and that the tumor did not infiltrate into the pancreas. For treatment, pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy was performed, and histological findings revealed a well- differentiated adenocarcinoma that originated in the minor duodenal papilla. Primary adenocarcinoma of the minor duodenal papilla is extremely rare. Our case is the first report of primary adenocarcinoma of the minor duodenal papilla at an early stage with no infiltration into muscularis propria of the duodenum and pancreas.
