Healthy and Unhealthy Dietary Patterns Are Related to Depression: A Case-Control Study

        Maryam Khosravi,Gity Sotoudeh,Reza Majdzadeh,Somayeh Nejati,Samaneh Darabi,Firoozeh Raisi,Ahmad Esmaillzadeh,Maryam Sorayani 대한신경정신의학회 2015 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.12 No.4

ObjectiveaaMajor depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability around the world. The relationship between depression and dietary patterns has been reported in a few studies but with controversial results. This study aimed to investigate this relationship in an Iranian population. MethodsaaIn our study, 330 depressed patients (cases) and healthy people (controls) (1:2) were individually matched according to age, sex and area of residence. New cases of depression were recruited from two psychiatric clinics in Tehran. Interviewers went to each patient’s residential area, and invited qualified individuals to participate in the study as controls. Food intake over the past year was collected using a validated semi quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Dietary patterns were determined by the principal components method. Binary logistic regression was used to test the effect of dietary patterns on depression. ResultsaaWe identified two major dietary patterns by using factor analysis: the healthy and unhealthy dietary patterns. We categorized the scores of these patterns to quartiles. After adjusting for non-depression drug use, job, marital status, children number, and body mass index, the relations of depression and quartiles of two dietary patterns are significant (p=0.04 & p=0.01, respectively). Compared with participants in the lowest quartile, those in the highest quartile had significantly lower odds ratio (OR) for depression in healthy dietary pattern, and higher OR for depression in unhealthy dietary pattern. ConclusionaaThis study indicates that healthy and unhealthy dietary patterns may be associated with the risk of depression. The results can be used for developing interventions that aim to promote healthy eating for the prevention of depression.

Adsorption of anionic dyes from aqueous solution by iron oxide nanospheres

Maryam Khosravi,Saeid Azizian 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.4

Magnetic iron oxide nanospheres were fabricated for removal of anionic dyes from aqueous solution. The iron oxide nanospheres are ferromagnetic and can be separated by an external magnetic field. The iron oxide has been synthesized with the solvothermal method. The prepared product was characterized by SEM and XRD methods. The adsorption of Reactive Orange (RO) and Reactive Yellow (RY) on to iron oxide nanospheres was investigated from both equilibrium and kinetic point of view and the results were modeled with appropriate equilibrium and kinetic models. The influences of solution pH and temperature on the removal efficiency were studied too.

Prevalence, awareness, treatment, control, and risk factors of hypertension among adults: a cross-sectional study in Iran

        Maryam Eghbali,Alireza Khosravi,Awat Feizi,Asieh Mansouri,Behzad Mahaki,Nizal Sarrafzadegan 한국역학회 2018 Epidemiology and Health Vol.40 No.-

OBJECTIVES: Hypertension (HTN) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Considering the importance of this disease for public health, this study was designed in order to determine the prevalence, awareness, treatment, control, and risk factors of HTN in the Iranian adult population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,107 residents of Isfahan, Iran. Samples were selected through multi-stage random cluster sampling in 2015-2016. The outcome variable was HTN, determined by measuring blood pressure in the right arm via a digital arm blood pressure monitor. Awareness, treatment, and control of HTN were assessed by a validated and reliable researcher-developed questionnaire. Other demographic and clinical variables were assessed via a demographic questionnaire. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of HTN was 17.3% (18.9 and 15.5% in men and women, respectively). The prevalence of HTN increased in both genders with age. The prevalence of awareness of HTN among people with HTN was 69.2%, of whom 92.4 and 59.9% were taking medication for HTN and had controlled HTN, respectively. Logistic regression identified age, body mass index, having diabetes and hyperlipidemia, and a positive family history of HTN as determinants of awareness of HTN. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that HTN was highly prevalent in the community, especially in men and in middle-aged and older adults. Approximately 30.8% of patients were unaware of their disease, and there was less awareness among younger adults. Despite the high frequency of taking medication to treat HTN, it was uncontrolled in more than 40.1% of patients. Health policy-makers should therefore consider appropriate preventive and therapeutic strategies for these high-risk groups.

Conceptualization and development of a questionnaire to determine physical activity barriers

        Maryam Selk-Ghaffari,Bahar Hassanmirzaei,Amin Nakhostin-Ansari,Behnaz Mahdaviani,Mohammad Saeid Khonji,Reyhaneh Aghajani,Maedeh Gholami-Mehrabadi,Afifeh Khosravi,Ramin Kordi 한국운동영양학회 2022 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.26 No.2

[Purpose] Considering the role of physical activity on public health and the high prevalence of physical inactivity worldwide, determining physical activity barriers is critical and will be a road map for future planning. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive questionnaire to determine physical activity barriers. [Methods] By reviewing previous studies, the main domains of the questionnaire were established. A physical activity expert interviewed 20 individuals aged 18 to 65 years. The results were evaluated by an expert panel for a content validity index. Face validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency were established on 204 individuals. [Results] The content validity index in all items was within the acceptable range (>0.85). Face validity was appropriate, and the misunderstanding index was < 20% in all items. Test-retest reliability in the final questionnaire in all items based on Cohen’s kappa was > 0.20, indicating fair agreement. Internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.63 was within the acceptable range. [Conclusion] The study revealed that the newly designed survey is valid, accurate, and reliable. The use of this comprehensive tool by policymakers would help them properly identify the perceived barriers, and thus perform better physical activity interventions as promotional health programs.

DNA-Binding and Thermodynamic Parameters, Structure and Cytotoxicity of Newly Designed Platinum(II) and Palladium(II) Anti-Tumor Complexes

        Mansouri-Torshizi, Hassan,Saeidifar, Maryam,Khosravi, Fatemeh,Divsalar, Adeleh,Saboury, Ali.Akbar,Ghasemi, Zahra Yekke Korean Chemical Society 2011 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.32 No.3

The complexes [Pd(bpy)(Hex-dtc)]$NO_3$ and [Pt(bpy)(Hex-dtc)]$NO_3$ (bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine and Hex-dtc is hexyldithiocarbamato ligands) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic studies. The cytotoxicity assay of the complexes has been performed on chronic myelogenous leukemia cell line, K562, at micromolar concentration. Both complexes showed cytotoxic activity far better than that of cisplatin under the same experimental conditions. The binding parameters of the complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was investigated using UV-visible and fluorescence techniques. They show the ability of cooperatively intercalating in CT-DNA. Gel filtration studies demonstrated that platinum complex could cleave the DNA. In the interaction studies between the Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes with CT-DNA, several binding and thermodynamic parameters have been determined, which may provide deeper insights into the mechanism of action of these types of complexes with nucleic acids.
