Exploring the Environmental and Medicinal Benefits of Silybum marianum Seed Fibers: Analysis of Morphological Fiber Characteristics

Ivana Markova 한국복식학회 2019 International journal of costume and fashion Vol.19 No.1

Environmental changes are shifting our priorities for natural resource management. With the quest for more sustainable fibers, new non-conventional silybum marianumseed fibers are explored in this fiber analysis. Silybum marianum seed fibers were harvested from the seed pods of one of the most common weed plants in United States and Europe. This study examines physical and chemical characteristics of silybum marianum seed fibers. Testing was conducted in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The determination of silymarin components in fibers was conducted using a liquid chromatograph summit detector (HPLC-UV) in accordance with European standards. The results of SEM microscopic analysis indicated similarity in fiber morphology to other non-conventional seed fibers such as kapok and poplar fibers. Similarity in cross-section and longitudinal views amongst non-conventional seed fibers established them to be a promising natural source for a variety of end uses. Additionally, moisture content, chemical composition, and silymarin extraction testing of Silybum marianum seed fibers were conducted. Silymarin extraction indicated presence of silymarin in fibers, however, further testing needs to be conducted on whether silymarin would be absorbed from thistle fibers to human body through dermal absorption – thus providing medicinal benefits.

Correlation of Early Outcomes and Intradiscal Interleukin-6 Expression in Lumbar Fusion Patients

        John D. Koerner,Dessislava Z. Markova,Greg D. Schroeder,Christopher L. Antonacci,Joseph Mendelis,Alexander R. Vaccaro,D. Greg Anderson,Chris K. Kepler 대한척추신경외과학회 2020 Neurospine Vol.17 No.1

Objective: To determine if there is correlation between intradiscal levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and early outcome measures in patients undergoing lumbar fusion for painful disc degeneration. Methods: Intervertebral disc tissue was separated into annulus fibrosus/nucleus pulposus and cultured separately in vitro in serum-free medium (Opti-MEM). Conditioned media was collected after 48 hours. The concentration of IL-6 was quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Pearson correlation coefficients quantified relationships between IL-6 levels and pre- and postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) back pain and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), as well as change in VAS/ODI. Results: Sixteen discs were harvested from 9 patients undergoing anterior lumbar interbody fusion (mean age, 47.4 years; range, 21–70 years). Mean preoperative and 6-month postoperative VAS were 8.1 and 3.7, respectively. Mean preoperative and postoperative ODI were 56.2 and 25.6, respectively. There were significant positive correlations between IL-6 expression and postoperative VAS (ρ=0.38, p=0.048) and ODI (ρ=0.44, p=0.02). No significant correlations were found between intradiscal IL-6 expression and preoperative VAS (ρ=-0.12, p=0.54). Trends were seen associating IL-6 expression and change in VAS/ODI (ρ=-0.35 p=0.067; ρ=-0.34, p=0.08, respectively). A trend associated IL-6 and preoperative ODI (ρ=0.36, p=0.063). Conclusion: The direct association between IL-6 expression and VAS/ODI suggests patients with elevated intradiscal cytokine expression may have worse early outcomes than those with lower expression of IL-6 after surgery for symptomatic disc degeneration.

      • Utilization of color change in the condition monitoring of synthetic hydraulic oils

Ossia, Chinwuba Victor,Hosung, Kong,Markova, Lyiubov V. Emerald Group Publishing Limited 2010 Industrial lubrication and tribology Vol.62 No.6

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present an optical technique for the condition monitoring of synthetic hydraulic oil; a deviation from the current techniques based on electrical principles which could be masked by wear particles and polar contaminants in oil. Design/methodology/approach - Color-change detecting device was developed using light-emitting diodes, optic fibers and photodiodes of three-color-sensing elements. Color ratio (CR) and total contamination parameters based on transmitted light intensity in red, green, and blue wavelengths were used for oil chemical and particulate contamination assessment. Findings - CR criterion was found independent of the particulate contamination of oil; but depended on chemical degradation. Total contamination index of the device depended on both the chemical degradation and particulate contamination of the oil, being most sensitive in blue wavelength, and least in the red. Test results for synthetic hydraulic oils monitored corroborated with results of viscosity, total acid number, RDE emission spectrometry, particulate counts and UV-Vis photospectrometry. CR showed a clearer indication of oil degradation, compared to key monitoring parameters such as total acid number, viscosity, RDE emission spectrometry and particle counts. Originality/value - This paper demonstrates how oil chemical degradation and total contamination could be detected through the device, before incipient wear occurs at tribological interfaces. The results showed that the color-change parameters are effective criteria for the condition monitoring of synthetic hydraulic oils.

        C.V. Ossia,H. Kong,H.G. Han,L. Markova,V. Makarenko 한국트라이볼로지학회 2007 한국트라이볼로지학회 학술대회 Vol.2007 No.6

Chromatic device was developed using light emitting diodes, optic fibers and photodiodes. Chromatic ratio and total contamination parameters based on transmitted light intensity in Red, Green, and Blue wavelengths were used for oil chemical and particulate contamination assessment. Chromatic ratio criterion was found independent of the particulate contamination of oil; but depended on chemical degradation, being more sensitive for synthetic than mineral hydraulic oil. Total contamination index of the sensor depended on both the chemical degradation and particulate contamination of the oil, being most sensitive in blue wavelength, and least in the red. Test results for synthetic hydraulic oils monitored corroborated with results of other tests such as viscosity, total acid number, elemental optical emission spectroscopy, particulate counts and UV - VIS photospectrometry. Chromatic ratio showed a clearer indication of oil degradation, compared to key monitoring parameters such as total acid number, viscosity and particle counts. The results showed that these parameters are effective criteria for the condition monitoring of synthetic hydraulic oils.
