Slenderness effects on the simulated response of longitudinal reinforcement in monotonic compression
Gil-Martin, Luisa Maria,Hernandez-Montes, Enrique,Aschheim, Mark,Pantazopoulou, Stavroula J. Techno-Press 2006 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.23 No.4
The influence of reinforcement buckling on the flexural response of reinforced concrete members is studied. The stress-strain response of compression reinforcement is determined computationally using a large-strain finite element model for bars of varied diameter, length, and initial eccentricity, and a mathematical expression is fitted to the simulation results. This relationship is used to represent the response of bars in compression in a moment-curvature analysis of a reinforced concrete cross section. The compression bar may carry more or less force than a tension bar at a corresponding strain, depending on the relative influence of Poisson effects and bar slenderness. Several cross-section analyses indicate that, for the distances between stirrups prescribed in modern concrete codes, the influence of inelastic buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement on the monotonic moment capacity is very small and can be neglected in many circumstances.

Objectives: The objective of this crossover clinical study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Energy Regulation with Acupuncture in clinical occurrences in impacted lower third molar surgeries. Methods: The sample consisted of 22 patients with two impacted third molars, in symmetrical position; divided into two groups: Test Group (TG) with Real Energy Regulation Group and Sham Group (SG) with Acupuncture without Energy Regulation function. The extraction was performed 30 days apart. Energy flow (Ryodoraku Method) and energy regulation performed before extraction were measured. Heart Rate (HR) and Blood Pressure (BP) were evaluated before and after energy regulation and after surgery, residual edema was measured by facial measurements (angle of the mandible to tragus (A-T); angle of the mandible to labial commissure (A-LC); angle of the mandible to the wing of the nose (A-WN); angle of the mandible to the corner of the eye (A-CE); angle of the mandible to the chin (A-C); and mouth opening by the interincisal distance, before and after seven days of surgery. To quantify intraoperative bleeding (ml), blood was aspirated along with the saline solution using a portable vacuum pump adaptor. The amount of saline solution used was subtracted from the final amount of aspirated fluid. Results: Mean of bleeding was lower in TG (p = 0.0392). There were significant differences between groups in facial distances: A-LC (p = 0.010), A-WN (p = 0.030) and A-C (p = 0.008). Conclusion: Energy regulation with real acupuncture was effective in reducing postoperative residual edema and intraoperative bleeding.
Translating Auschwitz: Translation as a gate access into L`univers concentrationnaire
( Maria Jesus Fernandez-gil ) 한국통역번역학회 2011 FORUM Vol.9 No.2
Real Exchange Rates in Latin America : The PPP Hypothesis and Fractional Integration
GUGLIELMO MARIA CAPORALE;LUIS A. GIL-ALANA 경제연구소 2010 Journal of Economic Development Vol.35 No.2
This paper tests for PPP in a group of seventeen Latin American (LA) countries by applying fractional integration techniques to real exchange rate series. Compared to earlier studies on these economies, this approach has the advantage of allowing for non-integer values for the degree of integration, and thus for the possibility of PPP not holding continuously but as a long-run equilibrium condition. Further, breaks in the series are endogenously determined using a procedure based on the least-squares principle. This is particularly crucial in the Latin American countries, which have been affected by several exchange rate crises and policy regime changes. The results, based on different assumptions about the underlying disturbances, are in the majority of cases inconsistent with PPP, even more so when breaks are incorporated: Argentina is the only country for which clear evidence of mean reversion is found in the model including a break, albeit only in the second subsample.
Would a Placebo Acupuncture Needle be Able to Induce Deqi?
Ca´ssia Maria Grillo,Vera Lucia Rasera Zotelli,Maria Lu´cia Bressiani Gil,Maria da Luz Rosa´rio de Sousa 사단법인약침학회 2018 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.11 No.5
The aim of this study was to evaluate Deqi in patients under treatment with acupunctureand sham acupuncture. Forty (40) volunteers of all genders with temporomandibulardysfunction (TMD) were randomized into two study groups: Acupuncture and ShamAcupuncture (non-penetrating device). The patients answered the Southampton NeedleSensation Questionnaire (SNSQ) at the initial and final sessions of acupuncture treatment. The questionnaire was composed of two parts: the first one, consisting of 17 Deqi descriptorsand a Likert scale in order to evaluate the intensity of each sensation; and the secondone, consisting of a visual analog scale (VAS) to evaluate how painful the acupuncturetreatment was. At the initial session, LI4 was the most cited acupuncture point in bothgroups, being responsible for a ‘Slight Intensity’ needling sensation of electric shock inthe acupuncture group at initial (10%) and final (15%) sessions. The most common relatedneedling sensations at different acupuncture points was “Pricking” and “Sharp” in bothgroups. The acupuncture group showed higher VAS than the Sham Acupuncture eitherin the initial (3.87 2.43) and final (2.04 2.14) sessions. Deqi response to acupuncturestimulation was verified either in the both groups.

Purpose: To estimate the roles of triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL) ratio and uric acid in predisposition for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in healthy children. Methods: Anthropometric and biochemical analyses were performed on 110 children, aged 5 to 12 years, from the Greek county of Laconia. The children were studied as a whole population and in separate groups according to age and predisposition to MetS after taking into consideration International Diabetes Federation criteria, body mass index, and lipid profile. Results: Seventeen percent of children exhibited predisposition to MetS, while 39.1% had TG/HDL ratio >1, and 3.64% had high level of uric acid. According to a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the relative probability for MetS predisposition sextupled when TG/HDL ratio was ≥1 (odds ratio [OR], 5.986; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.968–18.205). Children in the total population and those aged < 9 years had a greater probability for increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (OR, 3.614; 95% CI, 1.561–8.365) when TG/HDL ratio was ≥ 1. The TG/HDL ratio was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI) (P=0.035) in children without MetS, cholesterol in the total population (P=0.06) and children ≥9 years old (P=0.026), and with LDL in the total population and both age groups (P=0.001). The TG/HDL ratio was also positively correlated with alanine aminotransferase in the total population (P=0.033) and gamma-glutamyl transferase in most studied groups (P<0.001). Uric acid was positively correlated with waist circumference in the total population (P=0.043) and in those without MetS (P=0.027). It was also positively correlated with BMI, TG, cholesterol, and TG/HDL ratio and negatively correlated with HDL in most studied groups (P<0.005). Conclusion: The studied parameters correlated with MetS components and could be characterized as effective indexes for childhood MetS, regardless of age and predisposition to MetS.
Global and Regional Financial Integration in Emerging Asia: Evidence from Stock Markets
Guglielmo Maria Caporale,Luis A,Gil-Alana,Kefei You 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2021 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.36 No.2
This paper investigates if financial markets in emerging Asia have become more globally or regionally integrated since the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s. It employs a price-based measure of integration, namely, stock return differentials, between 10 emerging Asian economies and the United Stated (US) (as an indicator of global integration), as well as Japan and the Asian region (as two alternative indicators of regional integration), to test for mean reversion and draw inferences regarding financial integration. This paper makes a three-fold contribution to the literature. It uses not only aggregate but also industry-level data on stock returns, it examines the impact of the 2008 crisis, and it adopts a more general fractional integration approach. The evidence suggests that in emerging Asia, on both the aggregate and industry (especially for the financial sector) levels, there is more regional than global integration, and that the former became even stronger during the post-2008 crisis period. Furthermore, Japan’s influence has been declining and the Chinese stock market has become more integrated, both regionally and globally.
