      • Building Missionlogical Bridges in Japan

( Marcelo Reis Soares ),( Marcelo Eduardo Da Costa Dias ) 삼육대학교 선교와사회문제연구소 2018 Asia-Africa Journal of Mission and Ministry(AAMM) Vol.18 No.-

Although the first Japanese contact with Christianity happened in the 8th century, this country still figures as one of the biggest missiological challenges. In 2018 the Seventh-day Adventist Church has elected Japan as one of its primary missionary contexts. Based on the understanding about the importance of critical contextualization for mission, this study intends to suggest elements to build missiological bridges between Christianity and Shintoism, the Japanese cultural religion. Shintoism, a syncretistic religion, has shaped the Japanese culture and worldview. The aim is to study the values of the Japanese culture connected with Shintoism and develop channels, so Christians can reveal the gospel in a contextual way. Cultural Anthropology provides tools that are especially relevant to develop the process of critical contextualization.

Pharmacological Evidence of α2-Adrenergic Receptors in the Hypotensive Effect of Platonia insignis Mart.

Marcelo Bezerra Mendes,Jose Couras da Silva-Filho,Carla Kelly Barroso Sabino,Daniel Dias Rufino Arcanjo,Cleyton Marcos Melo Sousa,Isabella Cristhina Goncalves Costa,Mariana Helena Chaves,Rita de Ca´ss 한국식품영양과학회 2014 Journal of medicinal food Vol.17 No.10

Platonia insignis Mart. (Clusiaceae) is a medicinal plant from the Brazilian Amazon region. The present study evaluated the biological potential of the ethanol extract (Pi-EtOH) and ethyl acetate fraction (Pi-EtOAc) of the P. insignis fruit shells on the cardiovascular system of rats. Pi-EtOH or Pi-EtOAc (12.5, 25, and 50mg/kg) was administered intravenously in normotensive rats (260–300 g), and the mean arterial pressure and the heart rate were monitored. The Pi-EtOH induced hypotension ( - 11.56– 0.89, - 7.43– 0.85, and - 17.56– 1.97 mmHg) followed by bradycardia in two highest doses ( - 8.89– 3.62 and - 15.79– 1.83 beats/min) and Pi-EtOAc, at the same doses, induced hypotension ( - 11.2– 1.03, - 14.48– 1.13, - 29.89– 2.67 mmHg)more intensively, followedby tachycardia at thedose12.5and25mg/kg(15.64– 2.06, 19.31– 1.92 beats/min) and bradycardia at a dose of 50mg/kg (- 9.98– 7.33 beats/min). The hypotensive response from Pi-EtOAc was not attenuated when used in the pretreatment with L-NAME, verapamil, propranolol, and hexamethonium. However, when using yohimbine, the hypotensive effect was inhibited ( - 4.42– 1.28 (P< .05), - 3.29– 0.99 (P< .05), 2.06– 1.18 mmHg (P< .05); Student’s t-test). Hence, the Pi-EtOAc seems to act similarly to the a2-adrenergic agonist in this hypotensive effect.

      • Impact of Treatment Type on Overall Survival in Elderly Brazilian Women with Breast Cancer

Bello, Marcelo Adeodato,de Menezes, Raquel Ferreira,de Sousa Silva, Brunna,da Silva, Rafael de Carvalho,Cavalcanti, Rousiane Silva,da Costa Moraes, Thayane de Fatima,Tonellotto, Fabiana,de Aguiar, Suz Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.10

Objective: To analyze the survival of elderly patients with breast cancer according to the type of treatment used. Methods: A cohort study of women aged 80 or over with breast cancer registered with the Brazilian National Cancer Institute (Instituto Nacional do $C{\hat{a}}ncer$ - INCA) between 2008 and 2009 was conducted. Prognosis was analyzed according to the cancer treatment performed: surgery, radiotherapy, or hormone therapy. Analysis of the overall 5-year survival rate was performed using the Kaplan - Meier method, and comparisons of curves were undertaken using the log-rank test. For multiple regression analysis, Cox regression was used, adjusting for age and clinical stage, considering values of p < 0.05 as significant. Data were all analyzed using the statistical package SPSS version 20. Results: 70 women with a mean age of $84.0{\pm}3.7years$ at diagnosis participated in the study. The median follow-up time was 37.1 months (range 0.5-75.5), and 31 deaths (44.3%) occurred during this time. The median survival time was 51.2 months (95% CI, 44.9-57.4), higher in those who underwent surgery (p = 0.012) and those who had hormone therapy (p=0.001). Treatment with surgery reduced the risk of death by 61.7% (HR 0.3; 95% CI, 0.1-0.6; p = 0.001) when adjusted for clinical stage and age at diagnosis. However, there was no significant benefit from radiotherapy (HR 1.2; 95% CI, 0.5-2.5; p = 0.694). Conclusion: Treatment with surgery and hormone therapy increased the survival of our Brazilian patients with breast cancer aged 80 or over.

Functional assessment of respiratory muscles and lung capacity of CrossFit athletes

        Saulo Cesar Vallin Fabrin,Marcelo Palinkas,Evandro Marianetti Fioco,Guilherme Gallo Costa Gomes,Eloisa Maria Gatti Regueiro,Gabriel Pádua da Silva,Selma Siéssere,Edson Donizetti Verri,Simone Cecilio H 한국운동재활학회 2023 JER Vol.19 No.1

CrossFit is a high-intensity training related to physical fitness and respiratory capacity that can promote changes in lung function. This crosssectional study was aimed at evaluating respiratory muscle strength, electromyographic (EMG) activity, and lung capacity in CrossFit athletes. Thirty subjects aged between 25 and 35 years were divided into groups: CrossFit athletes (n= 15) and sedentary individuals without comorbidities (n= 15). Respiratory muscle strength was evaluated using maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures, lung capacity, and EMG of the sternocleidomastoid, serratus anterior, external intercostal, and diaphragm muscles at respiratory rest, maximal inspiration and expiration, and respiratory cycle. Data were tabulated and subjected to statistical analyses (t-test and Spearman test, P< 0.05). Respiratory muscle strength on EMG of the sternocleidomastoid, serratus, external intercostal, and diaphragm muscles at the respiratory cycle and maximal forced inspiration and expiration were higher in the CrossFit athletes group than in the sedentary group without comorbidities. CrossFit athlete group showed significantly strong positive correlation between maximal inspiratory and expiratory muscle strengths (Spearman rho= 0.903, P= 0.000), with increasing muscle strength during inspiration favoring an increase in strength during expiration. The forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1) also showed a significantly high positive correlation (Spearman rho= 0.912, P= 0.000) in the CrossFit athletes group, showing that higher FVC favors higher FEV1. The results of this study suggest that improved fitness is based on increased respiratory muscle strength on EMG in CrossFit athletes.

Antioxidant therapy enhances pulpal healing in bleached teeth

        Adriano Fonseca Lima,Marcelo Rocha Marques,Diana Gabriela Soares,Josimeri Hebling,Giselle Maria Marchi,Carlos Alberto de Souza Costa 대한치과보존학회 2016 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.41 No.1

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological effects of an antioxidant therapy on the pulp tissue of rat teeth exposed to a bleaching gel with 35% hydrogen peroxide. Materials and Methods: Forty rats were subjected to oral ingestion by gavage of distilled water (DW) or ascorbic acid (AA) 90 min before the bleaching therapy. For the bleaching treatment, the agent was applied twice for 5 min each to buccal surfaces of the first right mandibular molars. Then, the animals were sacrificed at 6 hr, 24 hr, 3 day, or 7 day post-bleaching, and the teeth were processed for microscopic evaluation of the pulp tissue. Results: At 6 hr, the pulp tissue showed moderate inflammatory reactions in all teeth of both groups. In the DW and AA groups, 100% and 80% of teeth exhibited pulp tissue with significant necrosis and intense tissue disorganization, respectively. At 24 hr, the AA-treated group demonstrated a greater regenerative capability than the DW group, with less intense inflammatory reaction and new odontoblast layer formation in 60% of the teeth. For up to the 7 day period, the areas of pulpal necrosis were replaced by viable connective tissue, and the dentin was underlined by differentiated odontoblast-like cells in most teeth of both groups. Conclusions: A slight reduction in initial pulpal damage during post-bleaching was promoted by AA therapy. However, the pulp tissue of AA-treated animals featured faster regenerative potential over time.

      • Synthesis, morphology and electrochemical applications of iron oxide based nanocomposites

        Letti, Camila J.,Costa, Karla A.G.,Gross, Marcos A.,Paterno, Leonardo G.,Pereira-da-Silva, Marcelo A.,Morais, Paulo C.,Soler, Maria A.G. Techno-Press 2017 Advances in nano research Vol.5 No.3

The development of hybrid systems comprising nanoparticles and polymers is an opening pathway for engineering nanocomposites exhibiting outstanding mechanical, optical, electrical, and magnetic properties. Among inorganic counterpart, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) exhibit high magnetization, controllable surface chemistry, spintronic properties, and biological compatibility. These characteristics enable them as a platform for biomedical applications and building blocks for bottom-up approaches, such as the layer-by-layer (LbL). In this regard, the present study is addressed to investigate IONP synthesised through co-precipitation route (average diameter around 7 nm), with either positive or negative surface charges, LbL assembled with sodium sulfonated polystyrene (PSS) or polyaniline (PANI). The surface and internal morphologies, and electrochemical properties of these nanocomposites were probed with atomic force microscopy, UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, and electrochemical measurements. The nanocomposites display a globular morphology with IONP densely packed while surface dressed by polyelectrolytes. The investigation of the effect of thermal annealing (300 up to $600^{\circ}C$) on the oxidation process of IONP assembled with PSS was performed using Raman spectroscopy. Our findings showed that PSS protects IONP from oxidation/phase transformation to hematite up to $400^{\circ}C$. The electrochemical performance of nanocomposite comprising IONP and PANI were investigated in $0.5mol{\times}L^{-1}$ $Na_2SO_4$ electrolyte solution by cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. Our findings indicate this structure as promising candidate for potential application as electrodes for supercapacitors.

Interaction between quinclorac and imidazolinones in the control of resistant Cyperus iria to ALS inhibitors

Avila Neto Roberto Costa,de Souza Pablo Mazzuco,Rubert Jaine,Seibt Tiago André,Thomasi Rosana Marzari,Melo Adriano Arrué,Alves Marcelo Plada,da Rosa Ulguim André 한국작물학회 2023 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.26 No.2

Herbicides belonging to the chemical group imidazolinones and the quinclorac herbicide are important to control weeds in fooded rice. The objective of this research was to evaluate the interaction of imidazolinones with quinclorac to control Cyperus iria resistant to acetolactate synthase inhibitors (ALS). It was conducted two experiments in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design with four replications. Colby’s methodology was used for experiment 1, through the application of quinclorac isolated and in mixture with herbicides imazethapyr, imazapyr e imazapic. The experiment 2, using dose–response curves, tested the herbicides quinclorac isolated and in diferent mixtures with the herbicide imazethapyr. For experiment 1, the expected and observed averages were compared. For experiment 2, the results were analyzed using the sigmoidal logistic model. Additive is the main interaction of mixtures of quinclorac with diferent herbicides from the chemical group of imidazolinones to control resistant C. iria. Mixing with imazethapyr at diferent proportions can cause an additive efect with quinclorac at higher doses.

Can cactus (Opuntia stricta [Haw.] Haw) cladodes plus urea replace wheat bran in steers' diet?

da Conceicao, Maria Gabriela,de Andrade Ferreira, Marcelo,de Lima Silva, Janaina,Costa, Cleber Thiago Ferreira,Chagas, Juana Catarina Cariri,de Figueiredo Monteiro, Carolina Correa Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.10

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of replacing wheat bran for cactus cladodes plus urea (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) on the intake of nutrients, nitrogen balance, microbial protein synthesis, and rumen fermentation for steers. Methods: Five crossbred steers (1/2 Holstein-Zebu), with rumen cannula and an average body weight of $180{\pm}5.3kg$, were assigned to a $5{\times}5$ Latin square design. Dietary treatments consisted of the replacement of the total of wheat bran in basal diet by cactus cladodes using the following proportions: 0% for basal diet, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% cactus cladodes replacing wheat bran. Urea was added to the diets to adjust the crude protein (CP) content to 130 g/kg dry matter. Results: Maximum dry matter intake (5.73 kg/d) and maximum nitrogen balance (103 g/d) were estimated for 54.6% and 70.8% replacement levels of wheat bran. The maximum microbial protein production (44.6 g/d) was obtained at a replacement level of 49.7%, and a medium value (125 g CP mic/kg total digestible nutrients) of microbial protein efficiency was observed. The rumen pH increased linearly according to cactus cladodes inclusion, while the ammonia nitrogen medium value was 24.5 mg/dL. Conclusion: The replacement of 55% wheat bran for cactus cladodes plus urea in the diet of crossbred steers is recommended.
