With the progress in virtual reality technology, various virtual objects can be displayed using head-mounted displays (HMD). However, force feedback sensations such as pushing against a virtual object are not possible with an HMD only. Focusing on force feedback, desktop-type devices are generally used, but the user cannot move in a virtual space because such devices are fixed on a desk. With a wearable force feedback device, users can move around while experiencing force feedback. Therefore, the authors have developed a wearable force feedback device using a magnetorheological fluid clutch and pneumatic rubber artificial muscle, aiming at presenting the elasticity, friction, and viscosity of an object. To date, we have developed a wearable four-degree-of-freedom (4-DOF) force feedback device and have quantitatively evaluated that it can present commanded elastic, frictional, and viscous forces to the end effector. However, sensory evaluation with a human has not been performed. In this paper, therefore, we conduct a sensory evaluation of the proposed method. In the experiment, frictional and viscous forces are rendered in a virtual space using a 4-DOF force feedback device. Subjects are asked to answer questions on a 1- to 7-point scale, from 1 (not at all) to 4 (neither) to 7 (strongly). The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for all data, and answer 4 (neither) was used as compared standard data. The experimental results confirmed that the user could feel the presence or absence of viscous and frictional forces. However, the magnitude of those forces was not sensed correctly.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the osteogenesis ability of osteogenic matrix cell sheets (OMCS) derived from old donor cells. Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) were obtained from young (7-week-old) and old (1-yearold) Fischer344 rats donors and cultured with modified Eagle’s medium (MEM group) alone or containing dexamethasone (Dex; 10 nM) and ascorbic acid phosphate (AscP; 0.28 mM) (Dex/AscP group). We prepared four in vitro experimental groups: (1) young MEM, (2) young Dex/AscP, (3) old MEM and (4) old Dex/AscP. Cell proliferation and osteogenic marker mRNA expression levels were evaluated in vitro. To assess bone formation in vivo, the cells of each group were combined with beta tricalcium phosphate (TCP) disks followed by implantation in recipient rats. The in vitro study showed significant differences in the mRNA expression of osteocalcin, ALP, and BMP2 between MEM and Dex/AscP groups. Bone formation following implantation was observed upon histological analyses of all groups. TCP combined with OMCS (OMCS/TCP group) resulted in enhanced bone formation compared to that following combination with BMSC (BMSC/ TCP). The osteocalcin content of the OMCS/TCP group 4 weeks after implantation was significantly higher than that in the BMSC/TCP construct for both young and old donors. The present study clearly indicated that OMCS could be generated from BMSCs of old as well as young donors using a mechanical retrieval method. Thus, through its usage of OMCS, this method may represent a potentially effective therapeutic option for cell-based therapy in elderly patients.
Improvement of Eosinophilic Otitis Media by Optimized Asthma Treatment

Eosinophilic otitis media (EOM) shows a very high rate of association with asthma, and intractable otitis media involves marked eosinophil infiltration into the middle ear. The middle ear space is connected to the nasopharynx by the Eustachian tube, and it is considered a part of the upper respiratory tract. Allergic rhinitis and asthma often coexist as chronic inflammatory diseases of the upper and lower airways, respectively, and have an impact on each other. In fact, inhaled corticosteroids reduce seasonal eosinophilia systemically in the circulation and locally in the nasal mucosa, as well as attenuate seasonal nasal symptoms. We report a case of EOM associated with adult-onset asthma that improved following optimal asthma therapy after changing the treatment from inhaled fluticasone propionate (FP) (200 µg b.i.d.) to a combination of FP/salmeterol (250/50 µg b.i.d.). This result supports the hypothesis that EOM and asthma are closely linked, presenting as different manifestations of a similar disease syndrome.
Improving Flow Distribution in a Suction Channel for a Highly Efficient Centrifugal Compressor

Design parameters for suction channels of process centrifugal compressors were investigated, and an optimization method to enhance stage efficiency by using the new design parameters was proposed. From results of computational fluid dynamics, the passage sectional area ratios $A_c/A_e$, $A_e/A_s$ and $A_c/A_s$ were found to be the dominant parameters for the pressure loss and circumferential flow distortion, where $A_c$, $A_e$ and $A_s$ are passage sectional areas for the casing upstream side, casing entrance and impeller eye, respectively. The Base suction channel was optimized using the new design parameters, and the Base and Optimized types were tested. Test results showed that the Optimized suction channel achieved 3.8% higher stage efficiency than the Base suction channel while maintaining the same operating range.
Malignant Melanoma of the Nipple: A Case Report

Malignant melanoma rarely originates from the female nipple. Tumors that develop on the skin of the breast are often subject to a delayed diagnosis. Cytologic examination provides excellent diagnostic capabilities and is a safe procedure with a lower risk of local implantation, compared to needle or incisional biopsy. We herein report a patient who underwent surgical resection of a primary malignant melanoma of the nipple. An elastic soft nodule was observed on the left nipple, and no abnormal lesions were identified in the breast. Eventually, a malignant melanoma was diagnosed from the clinical and cytological evaluation findings. This bulky tumor was classified as a stage IIIC nodular melanoma, with a thickness of 12 mm. The patient received adjuvant chemotherapy and exhibits no evidence of recurrence 7 years after surgery.

<P>Diffuse and multiple arc-anode attachment modes were observed when using DC arc discharge to prepare carbon nanomaterials. The effects of arc current and electrode gap distance on the formation of different attachment modes were investigated. The formation of different attachment modes is explained by the competition of the cathode jet and the anode jet. During the arc discharge, the surface temperature of the carbon electrode was measured by two-colour pyrometry combined with a high-speed camera employing appropriate band-pass filters. The relationship between the arc-anode attachment mode and the temperature fluctuation of the electrode surface was investigated. Due to the unbalanced Lorenz force, the rotation of arc spot was severe in diffuse arc-anode attachment mode, which led to relatively large temperature fluctuations on the anode surface, resulting in low purity of synthesised multi-wall carbon nanotubes on the anode deposit.
