A lipid-soluble ginseng extract possesses an anticancer activity against advanced human lung tumors in an established murine xenograft model without any sign of toxicity. The extract also shows a potent anti-proliferative activity against human cancer cell lines, leading to expansion of its preclinical applications to specific human tumor types.

<P><B>Objective</B></P><P>We examined the difference in responses to donepezil between carriers and non-carriers of the A allele at the +4 position of the choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) gene in Koreans.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Patients who met the criteria for probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (n=199) were recruited. Among these, 145 completed the 12-week follow-up evaluation and 135 completed the 26-week scheduled course. Differences and changes in the Korean version of the mini-mental state examination (MMSE-KC) score, Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease Neuropsychological Assessment Battery (CERAD-K[N]) wordlist subtest score (WSS), CERAD-K(N) total score (TS), and the Korean version of geriatric depression scale (GDS-K) score between baseline and 12 weeks or 26 weeks were assessed by the Student’s <I>t</I>-test.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>At 12 weeks, the changes in the MMSE-KC score, CERAD-K(N) WSS, and CERAD-K(N) TS from baseline were not significant between ChAT A allele carriers and non-carriers; however, at 26 weeks, these changes were significantly larger in ChAT A allele carriers than in non-carriers (<I>p</I>=0.02 for MMSE-KC and <I>p</I>=0.03 for CERAD-K(N) WSS respectively).</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Our findings in this study suggested that presence of the A allele at the +4 position of ChAT might positively influence the treatment effect of donepezil in the early stages of AD in Koreans.</P>

Lateral type poly-silicon field emitters were fabricated by utilizing the LOCOS (Local Oxidation of Silicon) process. For the implementation 'of an ideal field emission device with quasi-zero tunneling barrier, a new and fundamental approach has used conducted by introducing an intelligent carbon-based thin layer on the cathode tip surface via a field-assisted self-aligning of carbon (FASAC) process. Fundamental lowering of the turn-on field for the electron emission was feasible through the control of both the tip shape and surface barrier height.

Herbal medicines have an accurate effect on atopic dermatitis, and at the same time, they hardly have adverse reactions. However, herbal medicines are difficult to be quantitatively analyzed due to low-quality preparation and types. In addition, herbal medicines have raised many problems as they have not been standardized and their active components have not been analyzed. Patients with atopic dermatitis began to recognize the effectivity and safety of herbal medicines. Accordingly, standardization, biological analyses, animal experiments and clinical trials should be generally performed in order that herbal medicines may be recognized all over the world. A standard, which is to objectively judge the curative effect of atopic dermatitis, should be established as soon as possible. Case studies and RCTs (Randomized Controlled Trials) should be actively performed on the basis of rigid clinical trial design to the end that the curative effect of herbal medicines is recognized all the world over.
Nonactin hinders intracellular glycosylation in virus-infected baby hamster kidney cells.

<P>Potent antiviral agents hinder virus-infected cell machinery, leading to rescue from viral damage. In this study, we aimed to identify selective intracellular glycosylation inhibitor(s) that do not suppress glycoprotein synthesis. Our results showed that nonactin is a potent inhibitor of intracellular glycosylation. First, we examined the effects of nonactin on syncytium formation and cytopathic activity in virus-infected baby hamster kidney cells. Nonactin effectively inhibited syncytium formation in a concentration-dependent manner, and infectious virus production was markedly reduced. However, glycoprotein synthesis was not affected. In the presence of 5 ?g/ml nonactin, we observed the intracellular accumulation of vesicular stomatitis virus-G protein as well as syncytium formation, but no significant effects on Newcastle disease virus-hemagglutinin-neuramidase glycoprotein synthesis. Our results collectively indicate that nonactin potentially inhibits glycosylation by acting as a suppressor of intracellular glycosylation trafficking.</P>
Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia: Serial High-Resolution CT Findings in 22 Patients.

<P>OBJECTIVE: We conducted a review of serial high-resolution CT (HRCT) findings of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over the course of 14 years, we saw 32 patients with biopsy-confirmed COP. Serial HRCT scans were available for only 22 patients (seven men and 15 women; mean age, 52 years; median follow-up period, 8 months; range, 5-135 months). Serial CT scans were evaluated by two chest radiologists who reached a conclusion by consensus. Overall changes in disease extent were classified as cured, improved (i.e., ??10% decrease in extent), not changed, or progressed (i.e., ??10% increase in extent). When there were remaining abnormalities, the final follow-up CT images were analyzed to express observers' ideas regarding what type of interstitial lung disease the images most likely suggested. RESULTS: The two most common patterns of lung abnormality on initial scans were ground-glass opacification (86% of patients [19/22]) and consolidation (77% of patients [17/22]), distributed along the bronchovascular bundles or subpleural lungs in 13 patients (59%). In six patients (27%), the disease disappeared completely; in 15 patients (68%), the disease was decreased in extent; and in one patient (5%), no change in extent was detected on follow-up CT. When lesions remained, the final follow-up CT findings were reminiscent of fibrotic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia in 10 of 16 patients (63%). CONCLUSION: Although COP is a disease with a generally good prognosis, most patients (73%) with COP have some remaining disease seen on follow-up CT scans, and, in such cases, the lesions generally resemble a fibrotic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia pattern.</P>

A Mn complex was synthesized with N,N,N',N'-Tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine as a ligand. This research has investigated the properties and structure of Mn complex using magnetic moment, ESR, ESCA, and XRD. [Mn(Tpen)(H₂O)](C1O₄)₂ has Mn(II) in an oxidation state and high spin electron configuration. The Mn metal ion was coordinated by 6-nitrogen atoms and 1-oxygen atom of a water molecule, and its complex was found to be a distorted capped trigonal prism structure. An evaluation of the bleaching effect of the Mn complex as a bleaching activator of sodium percarbonate was performed using red wine, morin, and coffee soiled solutions and fabrics at low temperatures.

<P>A magnetically-separable and highly-stable enzyme system was developed by adsorption of enzymes in superparamagnetic hierarchically ordered mesocellular mesoporous silica (M-HMMS) and subsequent enzyme crosslinking. Superparamagnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously incorporated into hierarchically-ordered mesocellular mesoporous silica (HMMS) by the decomposition of a preformed iron propionate complex. The size of the incorporated superparamagnetic nanoparticles was around 5 nm, generating a magnetically separable host with high pore volumes and large pores (M-HMMS). α-chymotrypsin (CT) was adsorbed into M-HMMS with high loading (∼30 wt%) in less than 30 minutes. Glutaraldehyde (GA) treatment of adsorbed CT resulted in nanometer scale crosslinked enzyme aggregates in M-HMMS (CLEA-M). The activity of these CT aggregates in M-HMMS (CLEA-M-CT) was 34 times than that of simply adsorbed CT in M-HMMS, due to an effective prevention of enzyme leaching during washing <I>via</I> a ship-in-a-bottle approach. CLEA-M-CT maintained the initial activity not only under shaking (250 rpm) for 30 days, but also under recycled uses of 35 times. The substitution products of thioglycolic acid to the derivatives of 1-chloro-1-phenyl-2-carboethoxy-e-cyano ethene synthesized 1-Chloro-1-phenyl-2-carboethoxy-2-cyanoethene [Ⅴ], 1-chloro-10(4-chlorophenyl)-2-carboethoxy-2-cyanoethene[Ⅳ] and 1-chloro-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-carboethoxy-2-cyanoethene[Ⅶ] undergo substitution reactions with thioglycolic acid to form s-[(1-phenyl-2-carboethoxy-2-cyano) ethenyl]-thioglycolic acid s-[(1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-carboethoxy-e-cyano] ethenyl]-thioglycolic acid and s-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-carboethoxy-2-cyano] ethenyl]-thioglycolic acid, respectively. The structure of products were identified by elemental analysis, potentiometric titration, infrared and nmr spectra.
