      • Quality of Life and Radiotherapy Complications of Chinese Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients at Different 3DCRT Stages

        Purpose: the study aimed to compare the quality of life (QOL) and radiotherapy complications among Chinese nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients at different 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) stages adjusting for other variables. Methods: 511 NPC patients at different 3DCRT stages were enrolled. They were interviewed regarding SF-36, complications and socio-demographic variables and cancer- or treatment-related variables. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) based on SF-36, complications scores as dependent variables, 3DCRT stages as independent variables, and other variables as covariate were established. Results: The influencing factors of PCS included 3DCRT stages and age group. The influencing factors of MCS included 3DCRT stages and income. Most QOL scores of NPC patients were significantly associated with 3DCRT stage, after accounting for other variables. QOL scores of the patients receiving 3DCRT were the lowest, QOL scores of people after 3DCRT gradually increased. PCS scores of people greater than 5 years after 3DCRT was improved to or even better than the level before 3DCRT. The complications with significantly different scores of patients at different 3DCRT status included xerostomia, throat ache, hypogeusia, caries, hearing loss, snuffles. Conclusions: Clinicians should pay more attention to older NPC patients and patients with lower income. When patients receive 3DCRT, measures should be taken to reduce radiation injury to improve the patients' QOL.

      • Alternative Splicing of Breast Cancer Associated Gene BRCA1 from Breast Cancer Cell Line

        Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women, and mutations in the BRCA1 gene produce increased susceptibility to these malignancies in certain families. In this study, the forward 1-13 exons of breast cancer associated gene BRCA1 were cloned from breast cancer cell line ZR-75-30 by RT-PCR method. Sequence analysis showed that nine BRCA1 splice forms were isolated and characterized, compared with wild-type BRCA1 gene, five splice forms of which were novel. These splice isoforms were produced from the molecular mechanism of 5' and 3' alternative splicing. All these splice forms deleting exon 11b and the locations of alternative splicing were focused on two parts:one was exons 2 and 3, and the other was exons 9 and 10. These splice forms accorded with GT-AG rule. Most these BRCA1 splice variants still kept the original reading frame. Western blot analysis indicated that some BRCA1 splice variants were expressed in ZR-75-30 cell line at the protein level. In addition, we confirmed the presence of these new transcripts of BRCA1 gene in MDA-MB-435S, K562, Hela, HLA, HIC, H9, Jurkat and human fetus samples by RT-PCR analysis. These results suggested that breast cancer associated gene BRCA1 may have unexpectedly a large number of splice variants. We hypothesized that alternative splicing of BRCA1 possibly plays a major role in the tumorigenesis of breast and/or ovarian cancer. Thus, the identification of cancer-specific splice forms will provide a novel source for the discovery of diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers and tumor antigens suitable as targets for therapeutic intervention.

      • Multi-Dimensional Incentive Mechanism in Mobile Crowdsourcing with Moral Hazard

        <P>In current wireless communication systems, there is a rapid development of location based services, which will play an essential role in the future 5G networks. One key feature in providing the service is the mobile crowdsourcing in which a central cloud node denoted as the principal collects location based data from a large group of users. In this paper, we investigate the problem of how to provide continuous incentives based on user’s performances to encourage users’ participation in the crowdsourcing, which can be referred to the moral hazard problem in the contract theory. We not only propose the one-dimensional performance-reward related contract, but also extend this basic model into the multi-dimensional contract. First, an incentive contract which rewards users by evaluating their performances from multiple dimensions is proposed. Then, the utility maximization problem of the principal in both one-dimension and multi-dimension are formulated. Furthermore, we detailed the analysis of the multi-dimensional contract to allocate incentives. Finally, we use the numerical results to analyze the optimal reward package, and compare the principal’s utility under the different incentive mechanisms. Results demonstrate that by using the proposed incentive mechanism, the principal successfully maximizes the utilities, and the users obtain continuous incentives to participate in the crowdsourcing activity.</P>

        Efficient Photon Capturing with Ordered Three-Dimensional Nanowell Arrays

        <P>Unique light-matter interaction at nanophotonic regime can be harnessed for designing efficient photonic and optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, lasers, and photodetectors. In this work, periodic photon nanowells are fabricated with a low-cost and scalable approach, followed by systematic investigations of their photon capturing properties combining experiments and simulations. Intriguingly, it is found that a proper periodicity greatly facilitates photon capturing process in the nanowells, primarily owing to optical diffraction. Meanwhile, the nanoengineered morphology renders the nanostructures with a broad-band efficient light absorption. The findings in this work can be utilized to implement a new type of nanostructure-based solar cells.         A New Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithm for Inter-Cloud Service Composition

        Service composition in the Inter-Cloud raises new challenges that are caused by the different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the users, which are served by different geo-distributed Cloud providers. This paper aims to explore how to select and compose such services while considering how to reach high efficiency on cost and response time, low network latency, and high reliability across multiple Cloud providers. A new hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to perform the above task called LS-NSGA-II-DE is proposed, in which the differential evolution (DE) algorithm uses the adaptive mutation operator and crossover operator to replace the those of the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) to get the better convergence and diversity. At the same time, a Local Search (LS) method is performed for the Non-dominated solution set F{1} in each generation to improve the distribution of the F{1}. The simulation results show that our proposed algorithm performs well in terms of the solution distribution and convergence, and in addition, the optimality ability and scalability are better compared with those of the other algorithms.

      • The XRCC1 Arg399Gln Genetic Polymorphism Contributes to Hepatocellular Carcinoma Susceptibility: An Updated Meta-analysis

        The potential correlation of X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) Arg399Gln polymorphism with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) susceptibility is ambiguous. Taking account of inconsistent results of previous meta-analyses and new emerging literatures, we conducted a meta-analysis covering 15 case-control datasets to evaluate the relationship. Relevant studies from Medline, Embase and CNKI were retrieved. A fixed-effect model or a random-effect model, depending on between-study heterogeneity, were applied to estimate the association between XRCC1 polymorphism Arg399Gln and HCC risk with the results presented as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). In accordance with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, 15 studies with data for 6,556 individuals were enrolled in this systematic review. For overall HCC,thr XRCC1 polymorphism Arg399Gln was significantly associated with HCC susceptibility in a homozygote model as well as in a dominant model (G/G vs. A/A, OR=1.253, p=0.028; G/G+A/G vs. A/A, OR= 1.281, p=0.047, respectively), but not in a heterozygote model (A/G vs. A/A, OR=1.271, p=0.066) or a recessive model (G/G vs. A/G + A/A, OR= 1.049, p=0.542). Similar results were also observed on stratification analysis by ethnicity (A/G vs. A/A, OR=1.357, p=0.025; G/G vs. A/A, OR=1.310, p=0.011; G/G+A/G vs. A/A, OR= 1.371, p=0.013). However, no potential contribution of XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism to HCC susceptibility in HBV/HCV subgroups was identified. No publication bias was found in this study. In conclusion, the XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism contributes to HCC susceptibility. Due to the lack of studies in Western countries, further large-sample and rigorous studies are needed to validate the findings.

        Numerical Investigation of Cracks at Girder Ends of Prefabricated Post-Tensioned Prestressed Concrete I-Girders

        Prefabricated post-tensioned prestressed concrete (PTC) girders with high degrees of prestressing have been developed continuously in recent bridge designs to reach longer spans, higher quality, and larger load-bearing capacity. However, during the prefabrication process, several inclined and horizontal cracks were observed at the ends of a new style post-tensioned concrete girder, which could have a negative impact on the girders' longevity. In this study, a nonlinear finite element analysis technique was utilized to illustrate how concrete reacts and the mechanisms behind typical cracking patterns during the actual post-tensioning sequence. The prestressing load of a PTC girder was simulated with an improved cooling temperature method that accounts for immediate prestress losses. The field of principle tensile strain patterns and primary strain trajectories explained the overall mechanism underlying typical cracking behaviors. The results showed that the horizontal cracks under the anchorage plate (behavior 1) were generated by the bursting force, whereas the inclined cracks (behavior 2) and the horizontal cracks between the strands N1 and N2 anchor plates (behavior 3) were caused due to the spalling force. The effects of self-weight, girder end forms, as well as the transfer length of the prestressing strands, were discussed. The result demonstrates that both the self-weight and girder end shapes have a considerable effect on the behaviors of the anchorage zone. It is suggested that the transfer length of the anchor head be greater than 26 times of strand diameter to achieve the same effective stresses as the theoretical values.
