Urinary Cortisol Levels in Japanese Shorthorn Cattle before and after the Start of a Grazing Season
Higashiyama, Y.,Narita, H.,Nashiki, M.,Higashiyama, M.,Kanno, T. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2005 Animal Bioscience Vol.18 No.10
We conducted two experiments to assess the effect of transfer from housing to grazing on stress hormone secretion in cattle using urine samples. In a preliminary experiment, urine samples were collected following an adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) challenge, and cortisol levels in urine were compared with the levels in plasma. In a second experiment, urinary cortisol was measured before and after the start of a grazing season in 6 Japanese Shorthorn cows, all of which had experienced grazing before. In experiment 1, urinary cortisol showed a pattern of changes similar to that of plasma with a 0.5-h temporal lag time, and the peak levels were 4 to 10 times higher than the basal levels. In experiment 2, the urinary cortisol levels in cows did not change after the cows were let out to pasture, with no decreases in body weight. This study suggests that the transfer from housing to grazing did not affect physiological responses to cause high excretion of urinary cortisol in grazing-experienced cattle using a non-invasive sampling method.
Urinary Catecholamine and Cortisol Responses of Japanese Shorthorn Cows to Social Isolation
Higashiyama, Yumi,Nashiki, M.,Narita, H. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.10
This study was performed to investigate the use of urinary catecholamines to monitor changes in the activity of the sympathetic nervous system and to determine the relationship of urinary cortisol and catecholamines in Japanese Shorthorn cows in response to social isolation. One cow was isolated from its group, which consisted of 14 cows (457 to 756 kg BW, 2 to 12 years old), for three days. The isolated cow was in contact with the other cows visually only at meal times. This isolation was repeated for 6 cows. Spontaneously voided urine samples were collected from the experimental animals once a day, before the treatment and on days 1, 2, and 3. Urinary cortisol and adrenaline levels were significantly increased compared with pre-isolation levels on the first day, and then declined to the basal levels during the next two days. Urinary noradrenaline levels changed in the same way as cortisol and adrenaline levels, but the difference was not significant. Urinary cortisol levels tended to be correlated with those of urinary adrenaline, but not noradrenaline. This study suggests that the urinary adrenaline levels can be a non-invasive indicator of stress and that the change of urinary adrenaline is similar to that of urinary cortisol.

Purpose: Liver metastasis (LM) is reported in approximately 40% of patients with advanced/metastatic gastric/gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma (metastatic esophagogastric adenocarcinoma; mGEA) and is associated with a worse prognosis. This post-hoc analysis from the RAINBOW trial reported the efficacy, safety, and biomarker outcomes of ramucirumab and paclitaxel combination treatment (RAM+PAC) in patients with (LM+) and without (LM−) LM at baseline. Materials and Methods: Patients (n=665) were randomly assigned on a 1:1 basis to receive either RAM+PAC (LM+: 150, LM−: 180) or placebo and paclitaxel (PL+PAC) (LM+: 138, LM−: 197). The overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were evaluated using stratified Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression models. The correlation of dichotomized biomarkers (VEGF-C, D; VEGFR-1,2) with efficacy in the LM+ versus LM− subgroups was analyzed using the Cox regression model with reported interaction P-values. Results: The presence of LM was associated with earlier progression than those without LM, particularly in patients receiving PL+PAC (hazard ratio [HR], 1.68). RAM+PAC treatment improved OS and PFS irrespective of LM status but showed greater improvement in LM+ than that in LM− (OS HR, 0.71 [LM+] vs. 0.88 [LM−]; PFS HR, 0.47 [LM+] vs. 0.76 [LM−]). Treatment-emergent adverse events were similar between patients with and without LM. No predictive relationship was observed between biomarker levels (VEGF-C, D; VEGFR-1,2) and efficacy outcome (OS, PFS) (all interaction P-values >0.05). Conclusions: RAM provided a significant benefit, irrespective of LM status; however, its effect was numerically stronger in patients with LM. Therefore, RAM+PAC is a clinically meaningful therapeutic option for patients with mGEA and LM.

We studied ZnO growth on 3C-SiC(001)/Si(001) templates. In-situ reflection high- energy electron diffraction (RHEED) observations implied that ZnO grown on 3C-SiC(001) had a critical thickness (50 nm). From a structural characterization by using X-ray diffraction, we revealed that ZnO films thinner than the critical thickness grown on 3C-SiC(001) had a [10-11] orientation with 4-fold in-plane symmetry. On the other hand, ZnO films thicker than the critical thickness consisted of [10-11] and [0001] orientations. Also, the portion of [0001] oriented ZnO increased with the layer thickness. Possible interface configurations of ZnO(10-11)/3C-SiC(001) and ZnO(0001)/ZnO(10-11) are suggested.

Optical characteristics of the AlGaN/GaN/AlGaN heterostructure waveguide grown on Si substrate are estimated by photoluminescence (PL) measurement. The sample was selectively grown as triangular striped structures by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). We have studied the dependence of PL characteristics of the waveguide structures on the variation of input power position. Two main peaks related to different facets in the waveguide structures were observed.
