        Hydrogen sulfide alleviates hypothyroidism-induced myocardial fibrosis in rats through stimulating autophagy and inhibiting TGF-β1/Smad2 pathway

        Hypothyroidism alone can lead to myocardial fibrosis and result in heart failure, but traditional hormone replacement therapy does not improve the fibrotic situation. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a new gas signaling molecule, possesses antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic capabilities. Whether H2S could improve hypothyroidism-induced myocardial fibrosis are not yet studied. In our study, H2S could decrease collagen deposition in the myocardial tissue of rats caused by hypothyroidism. Furthermore, in hypothyroidism-induced rats, we found that H2S could enhance cystathionine-gamma-lyase (CSE), not cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), protein expressions. Finally, we noticed that H2S could elevate autophagy levels and inhibit the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) signal transduction pathway. In conclusion, our experiments not only suggest that H2S could alleviate hypothyroidism- induced myocardial fibrosis by activating autophagy and suppressing TGF-β1/ SMAD family member 2 (Smad 2) signal transduction pathway, but also show that it can be used as a complementary treatment to conventional hormone therapy.

        Circuit Model for the Effect of Nonradiative Recombination in a High-Speed Distributed-Feedback Laser

        Based on single-mode rate equations, we present an improved equivalent-circuit model for distributedfeedback (DFB) lasers that accounts for the effects of parasitic parameters and nonradiative recombination. This equivalent-circuit model is composed of a parasitic circuit, an electrical circuit, an optical circuit, and a phase circuit, modeling the circuit equations transformed from the rate equations. The validity of the proposed circuit model is verified by comparing simulation results to measured results in the literature. The results show that the slope efficiency and threshold current of the model are 0.22 W/A and 13 mA respectively. It is also shown that increasing bias current results in the increase of the relaxation-oscillation frequency. Moreover, we show that the larger the bias current, the lower the frequency chirp, increasing the possibility of extending the transmission distance of an optical-fiber communication system. The results indicate that the proposed circuit model can accurately predict a DFB laser’s static and dynamic characteristics.

        Oligopeptide derived from solid-state fermented cottonseed meal significantly affect the immunomodulatory in BALB/c mice treated with cyclophosphamide

        In this study, the immunomodulatory activity of oligopeptide (CP) derived from solid-state fermented cottonseed meal were investigated in immunosuppressed BALB/c mice models by treatment with cyclophosphamide (CY). Results indicated that oligopeptide increased the thymus and spleen indices of CY-treated mice. The count of plague forming cells (PFC) and the content of half serum hemolysis (HC50) in immunosuppressive mice were restored to the normal level in CP-10 and CP-20 groups while the cytokines interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) were increased significantly in CP-20 group. Similar increasing the immunoglobulin of IgG and IgM content in the serum of CP-10 group were also observed. These findings indicated that oligopeptide derived from solid-state fermented cottonseed meal had a strong immune-enhancing activity as well as a protective effect against immunosuppression induced by cyclophosphamide in mice.

        Simulation of the irradiation effect on hardness of Chinese HTGR A508-3 steels with CPFEM

        Understanding the irradiation hardening effect of structural steels under various irradiation conditions plays an important role in developing advanced nuclear systems. Such being the case, a crystal plasticity model for body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal based on the density of dislocations and irradiation defects is summarized and numerically implemented in this paper. Based on this model, nano-indentation hardness of Chinese A508-3 steels with ion irradiation is calculated. Very good agreement is observed between simulation and experimental data of several different irradiation doses subjected to various operating temperatures, from which, it can be concluded that indentation hardness increases with increasing irradiation dose at both room temperature and high temperature. Consequently, the validity of this model has been proved properly, and furthermore, the model established in this paper could guide the study of irradiation hardening effect and temperature effect to some extent.

        A new green alternative solvent for extracting echinacoside and acteoside from Cistanche deserticola based on ternary natural deep eutectic solvent

        Echinacoside and acteoside, the representative constituents of Cistanche deserticola Y. C. Ma (C. deserticola),are known for its many important biological activities. In this study, a novel ternary natural deepeutectic solvent (NADES) (citric acid, fructose and glucose in a 1:2:1 molar ratio, 30 % water content)was obtained through the adjustment and optimization of single-factor experiments. And through theBox-Behnken design optimization, the optimal extraction conditions were obtained, at the moment,the yields of echinacoside and acteoside were 6.16 and 2.13 mg/g, respectively. In addition, through computermolecular simulation, it was found that there are strong hydrogen bonds and interactions betweenthe molecules of NADES, and the hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces and p-p interactions played animportant role in the extraction of echinacoside and acteoside from C. deserticola by NADES. Finally, comparedwith the traditional method, NADES ultrasound-assisted extraction of echinacoside and acteosidehas a shorter time (15 min), the maximum extraction yield is 1.54–2.86 times and 1.26–2.52 times thanthat of traditional extraction methods for echinacoside and acteoside, respectively. This study demonstratesthat NADES can provides a new direction for developing new sustainable alternatives, improvinggreen extraction process and efficiency for extracting natural active substances.

        A Novel Self-Healing Polyurethane with High Transparency and Strength: Effects of Multiple Supermolecular Forces

        It is a considerable challenge for expanding the applications of self-healing polyurethane because of the dilemma in balancing its mechanical and self-healing properties. Herein, a series of self-healing polyurethane systems (PUT-x) with short-range ordered rigid aromatic structures were synthesized by simply adjusting two kinds of diisocyanates, and by ingenious addition of aromatic chain extender. We hope to regulate the π-π interactions and further to manipulate the properties of obtained polyurethanes via adjusting the amount of the benzene rings in the molecular chains of the PUT-x systems. The PUT-5 with decent self-healing ability, optimal mechanical properties, acceptable thermal stability and favorable transparency was selected to incorporate liquid metal and fluorescent powder to fabricate conductive wire and anti-counterfeiting film. Significantly, the liquid metal could be recycled from the conductive wire conveniently without using strong acids or strong bases. Moreover, PUT-5 exemplarily withstood long-term soaking in normal saline, and no deformation could be identified.

        Preparation of shaped non-polyelectrolyte hydrogel particles with decomposable and recyclable performance by vortex ring freezing

        The vortex-ring derived particles are new type of non-spherical hydrogel particles, which are prepared byimitating the process of vortex-ring in nature. However, the traditional existing vorticity ring derivedhydrogel particles were prepared by dropping polyelectrolyte solution into contra-ion coagulation bath,which limited the choice of materials. In this paper, a strategy of preparation non-spherical hydrogel particlesby using non-polyelectrolyte polyvinyl alcohol through the method of vortex ring was proposed. Based on the principle that the boraciated polyvinyl alcohol solution could be quickly gelled underalkaline condition, the spherical and various derivative shapes (red cell, bowl, dish, ring) of polyvinylalcohol vortex-ring derived hydrogel particles (PVHP) were prepared. The hydrogel particles have theability to assemble into different modules by dynamic borate bond in the hydrogel particles. Also, thisdynamic borate bond endowed the PVHP decomposable and recyclable performances. In addition,two-compartments, three-compartments and magnetic PVHP were also prepared, endowing PVHP withseveral functions. which opens up a new environmentally friendly way for the preparation of multifunctionalparticles.

        Distortional Buckling Analysis of I-Steel Concrete Composite Beams Subjected to Hogging Moment

        Bending-torsional distortion buckling is one of the most critical buckling modes of steel–concrete composite beams when they are working under hogging moment. The rotational and lateral restraint stiff ness provided by the steel web to the steel bottom fl ange are the key factors to determine this form of buckling. Firstly, the formula for solving the elastic rotational restraint stiff ness of the composite fl ange of steel beam upper fl ange and concrete slab to the steel web is derived. Then, the equivalent lateral and rotational restraint stiff ness of the steel bottom fl ange subjected to hogging moment are thoroughly studied. Considering the rotation restraint eff ect of the composite fl ange, this paper provides the calculation formula for the critical bending moment of I-steel concrete composite beams (I-SCCB) under hogging moment. Fifteen examples are considered to calculate the critical bending moment of the I-SCCB under hogging moment with the simplifi ed analytical method introduced in this paper. The results are compared with the ones derived by ANSYS numerical analyses and relevant research of other scholars. The infl uence of the arrangement of the shear studs on the critical bending moment of the I-SCCB is investigated. It is concluded that the results given by the simplifi ed analytical method are in good agreement with the ones obtained by the ANSYS fi nite element numerical method. Both methods show that the critical load of the distortional buckling of the I-SCCB under hogging moment is less aff ected by the member’s length. The critical bending moment of distortional buckling of the I-SCCB signifi cantly increases with the presence of shear studs. However, once shear studs are used, it tends to be stable with the increase of equivalent restrained torsional rotational stiff ness at the top edge of the steel web.

        Cenozoic tectonic evolution in the western Qaidam Basin inferred from subsurface data

        It is an agreement that collision of Indian and Asian plates causes uplift of the Tibet Plateau. However, great controversy exists about uplifting history and mechanisms of the Tibetan Plateau. Uplift history of the Tibetan Plateau has been well recorded in the Qaidam Basin, located in the northern margin of the Tibet Plateau. In this paper, we recognize and classify faults recorded by subsurface seismic data in the western Qaidam Basin. In addition, we reconstruct the Cenozoic deformation history of the Qaidam Basin based on balanced section of 5 seismic profiles. The results indicates that 1) Faults in the western Qaidam Basin can be classified as growth faults and non-growth faults, and the growth faults could be divided into three subcategories. 2) According to timing and manner of fault activities, faults and strata in the western Qaidam Basin could be divided into two structural layers: the lower (Lulehe Fm-Xia Youshashan Fm) and the upper (Shang Youshashan Fm-Qigequan Fm) layer. 3) The western Qaidam Basin has experienced two intensive tectonic deformations: the first phase occurs at 43.8−22 Ma (Middle Eocene−Early Miocene), which reached peak at 31.5 Ma (Early Oligocene); the second phase occurred between 14.9 and 0 Ma (Middle Miocene−Present), and the second phase is stronger than the first phase. Recognizing early fault activities confirm previous results that northern Tibet has sensed collision between the India and the Asia shortly after the collision. However, our results here emphasize that the northern Tibet has experienced another phase of shortening and uplift in the late Neogene. It was the two-stage tectonic activities that work together to produce the current Tibetan Plateau.
