Outcome of Pars Plana Retinopexy with Perfluoro-n-octane-Silicone Oil Exchange for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment in Dogs: 9 Eyes

        Lina Susanti,강선미,박상완,박은진,박윤지,김보윤,정만복,서강문 한국임상수의학회 2018 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.35 No.4

This study was performed to describe the outcome of pars plana retinopexy with perfluoro-n-octane (PFO)-silicone oil (SiO) exchange in dogs with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in Seoul National University VeterinaryMedical Teaching Hospital (SNU VMTH) from 2014 to 2017. Nine eyes of 8 dogs were included in this study. Medicalrecords including signalment, history, duration from onset of blindness to surgical intervention, pre-operative findings, duration from surgery to regaining vision, and post-operative complications were evaluated. No eyes were visual beforesurgery. Duration from onset of blindness to surgical intervention was 2-30 days (median 8 days); duration from surgeryto regain vision was 1-14 days (median 6 days); follow-up time was 15-1088 days (median 69 days). Post-operativecomplications were divided as temporary vs permanent conditions. Temporary complications were corneal ulcer, uveitis, retinal haemorrhage, glaucoma, subconjunctival leakage of SiO, and vitreal haemorrhage. Permanent complications wereanterior chamber migration of SiO, retinal degeneration, corneal degeneration, re-detachment, and cataract. Six of 9eyes regained functional vision, five of which remained visual throughout the follow-up time while the other one lostvision after 3 months because of uveitic glaucoma. In conclusion, pars plana retinopexy with PFO-SiO exchangeprovided fair outcome in 66.7% cases described in this study.

Malignant Anterior Uveal Melanoma Masquerading as Limbal Melanoma in a Shih-Tzu Dog with Recurrences of Hyphema

        Lina Susanti,서강문,강선미 한국임상수의학회 2020 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.37 No.5

A 14-year-old neutered-male Shih-Tzu was referred for glaucoma and hyphema accompanied by systemic hypertension. After topical corticosteroid and antiglaucoma medications, the left eye (OS) progressed phthisically, but ocular hypertension redevelop one-year-and-seven-months later. Suspected limbal melanoma developed in peripheral cornea/limbal sclera with heavily pigmented cornea OS. Ultrasound biomicroscopy and ocular ultrasonography differentiated ciliary body origin-heterogeneous mass from limbal mass. Persistent hyphema and pigmented cornea might obscure intraocular lesion and advanced diagnostic methods played a crucial role. Unlike the generally benign limbal melanoma, aggressive treatment was recommended for uveal tumor. Histopathology of enucleated OS confirmed malignant uveal melanoma with chronic hypertensive vasculopathy.

Marsupialization of the Nictitating Membrane Cyst Following Cherry Eye Repair in a Dog

        김선효,강선미,Lina Susanti,김보윤,박윤지,심재호,고석민,이은지,서강문 한국임상수의학회 2020 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.37 No.3

One-year-old male Cocker Spaniel dog was referred for the third eyelid enlargement and inflammation in the left eye (OS). It gradually swelled for 2 weeks after the cherry eye repair by conjunctival mucosa pocket procedure at a private animal clinic. Routine ophthalmic examinations including neuro-ophthalmic examination, Schirmer tear test, intraocular pressure and corneal fluorescein staining were all normal. No lesions were found on slit lamp biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy except for third eyelid swelling in the OS. Ultrasonography revealed cystic structure within the OS nictitating membrane. Fluid from the cyst was aspirated and there were no microorganisms or neoplastic changes. Surgical intervention was performed under general anesthesia. On the day of the surgery, there was a deep corneal ulcer in the OS, which had not existed before. Ventral palpebral surface of the third eyelid was incised horizontally to the shaft of the T-shaped hyaline cartilage. And then, a full thickness of the cystic wall was incised and marsupialized. Additionally, a direct suture was performed on the ulcerated cornea. Topical and systemic antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs were prescribed. One month after the surgery, the third eyelid swelling and the discharge were improved. Marsupialization of the nictitating membrane cyst relieved the swelling of the third eyelid and inflammation. It could be a simple but effective surgical intervention for the cystic complication of conjunctival mucosa pocket procedure in dogs.

Development of dental hygiene gum for cats considering their anatomical features of dentition

        김보윤,강선미,Lina Susanti,박윤지,김선효,심재호,이은지,서강문 대한수의학회 2019 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.20 No.5

The purpose of this study was to develop effective dental hygiene chews for cats based on the anatomical features of the dentition and patterns of chewing motion. All cats were volunteered for dental prophylaxis followed by dental impressions using yellow stone and alginate under general anesthesia. Twenty parameters related to dentition were defined in order to compare dental impressions using digital caliper. For the chewing motion study, patterns of chewing motion were identified based on recordings made with a digital camera. Ten cats (4 domestic shorthairs, 2 Russian blues, 1 American shorthair, 1 Persian, 1 Turkish Angora, and 1 Devon Rex) were recruited for the study. The parameters related to teeth and oral size were similar among the studied cats. Chewing motion can be described as more of a guillotine-like motion rather than a crushing motion, with cats chewing 3–7 times before swallowing. The chewing pattern of cats involves shearing for a short period of time followed by immediate swallowing. Therefore, the overall size of the dental hygiene chew could be determined based on the measurement of the oral size for inducing chewing. The surface details of the dental hygiene chew could be designed for prevention and removal of dental calculus and plaque in cats considering the anatomical teeth parameters. Dental hygiene chews customized for cats considering the different anatomical features of their teeth might be effective for oral care.
