The notorious lamiine species Asian Longhorn Beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, is one of the major invasive pests of street trees, which is an endemic species of Korea and China. By far, the distributional range of Korean A. glabripennis population is restricted to only central to northeastern forest region of South Korea. In this study, we found unreported A. glabripennis populations in 4 different port cities and adjacent cities. These new populations are found in very much urbanic regions; Incheon, western part of Seoul, Busan and Ulsan. These populations can be distinctly differentiated with previously reported populations by massive damage on trees, unusual usage of host plant and spotted elytral pattern. To test their identity, we analyse the genetic patterns of the A. glabripennis populations sampled across South Korea based on three mitochondrial genes, Cytochrome Oxidase I – leucin tRNA – Cytochrome Oxidase II (COI-tRNALeu- COII). Additionally, we used available sequences of COI - tRNALeu - COII of 104 Chinese and 15 Korean individuals from NCBI. Here we show that Korean population is distinctly divided into two major clades, namely native populations and non-native ones, with 0.7% ~ 1.2% of genetic divergence. Hence, the non-native ones can be divided into two subgroups, which we call Incheon-Seoul complex and Busan-Ulsan complex. We observed that these newly found groups, Incheon-Seoul complex and Busan-Ulsan complex share perfectly identical COI haplotype within each group. This study strongly suggests that newly found populations are introduced respectively and these populations might be derived from very small number of introduced founders.

<P>Filled skutterudites are promising mid-to-high temperature range thermoelectric materials for power generation, however, a traditional melt-solidification process followed by annealing (TMA) and powder metallurgical sintering requires a long processing time more than 10 days to ensure the structural and compositional homogeniety of materials with a high thermoelectric conversion efficiency zT. To address this, we herein report a simple and efficient synthesis of high-performance n- and p-type filled skutterudites that successfully produces a complete single phase from single to multiple filled materials in a day. The nanograin (similar to 440 nm) structured bulks are prepared from the combined process of temperature regulated melt spinning (MS) using ingots and short-time spark plasma sintering (SPS). The controlled phase evolution and transformation by adjusting rapid solidification and densification conditions are demonstrated by a comprehensive analysis including structure refinement and atomic-scale observation, verifying the desired occupancy and random distribution of filling elements, respectively. The maximum zT values of filled skutterudites fabricated here were 1.48 +/- 0.17 at 800 K for n-type In0.12Yb0.20Co4.00Sb11.84 and 1.15 +/- 0.13 at 750 K for p-type Ce0.91Fe3.40Co0.59Sb12.14, which are comparable to the highest zT values reported for filled skutterudites fabricated by TMA-based processes. Superior reproducibility achieved in shortened processing time enables the present synthetic process to be utilized for commercial manufacturing process that can be readily applied to massive production of bulk filled skutterudites for high-performance thermoelectric power generators. Experimental and Simulation Studies on EBIS at KOMAC

At the Korea Multipurpose Accelerator Complex (KOMAC), we have been working on electron beam ion sources (EBIS). An EBIS test bench consists of an EBIS-A, a newly designed Wien filter for the charge separation and a short pulse electronics for the production of short pulse ion beams. We also have a plan for another EBIS that has a 7 T superconducting magnet. Simulations of the electron beam in the 7 T EBIS are on progress. We report experimental results from the EBIS test bench and show simulation results on the electron gun design and the electron beam transmission through the 7 T magnetic field.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>During postnatal neurodevelopment, excessive synapses must be eliminated by microglia to complete the establishment of neural circuits in the brain. The lack of synaptic regulation by microglia has been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, and intellectual disability. Here we suggest that vaccinia‐related kinase 2 (VRK2), which is expressed in microglia, may stimulate synaptic elimination by microglia. In VRK2‐deficient mice (VRK2<SUP>KO</SUP>), reduced numbers of presynaptic puncta within microglia were observed. Moreover, the numbers of presynaptic puncta and synapses were abnormally increased in VRK2<SUP>KO</SUP> mice by the second postnatal week. These differences did not persist into adulthood. Even though an increase in the number of synapses was normalized, adult VRK2<SUP>KO</SUP> mice showed behavioral defects in social behaviors, contextual fear memory, and spatial memory.</P><P><B>Main points</B></P><P>VRK2 is specifically expressed in microglia in the brain. The number of presynaptic puncta within microglia was reduced in VRK2<SUP>KO</SUP> mice. Adult VRK2<SUP>KO</SUP> mice displayed several behavioral deficits. </P>

Correlated evolution of biology and morphology of related organs of insects is an intriguing yet poorly understood topic. Gigantic member of phytophagan, the subfamily Cerambycinae provide us a unique opportunity to understand the topic because they have wide range of host plants, oviposition strategies and various forms of ovipositors. The evolutionary pathway of these traits is totally unknown because no robust internal phylogeny has been studied. Here we construct a multilocus phylogeny of Cerambycinae (134 taxa, 9 gene regions, 5211bp) focusing on wide range of oviposition strategies, host plant and ovipositor length. Ancestral state reconstruction analyses show that shortened ovipositor in Cerambycinae evolved at least four times independently; host plant use evolved from stressed hosts to dead and living host, broad leaved trees to conifer and herbaceus plants. Continuous mapping of ancestral state reconstruction shows extremely shortened ovipositor evolved independently at least four times. The correlated evolution test revealed the only correlation is between the ovipositor length and the oviposition strategy. This study unveiled the complex evolutionary history of ovipositor, oviposition strategy, host plant usage and their correlation within Cerambycinae for the first time.
Magnetic Couplings between V Monolayers through Transition Metals (Mo, Cr, W) in V/TM(001)/V Systems

We investigate the magnetic coupling between the V monolayers mediated through transition metals (TM) of Cr, Mo and W by using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method based on density functional theory. The general gradient approximation (GGA) is used for the exchange-correlation potential. The investigated systems are composed of one monolayer of V on each side of six and seven layers of TMs. The magnetic couplings between the V monolayer and the nearest neighboring TM atoms are calculated to be antiferromagnetic (AFM). For six layers of Cr, Mo, and W(001) spacers, the AFM, ferromagnetic (FM), and FM couplings are calculated to be more stable by the total energy difference (TE = EFM . EAFM) of 10, .14 and .16 meV, respectively. For seven layers of Cr, Mo, and W(001) spacers, the FM, AFM, and AFM couplings between the V monolayers are calculated to be more stable by TE of .30, 25, and 13 meV, respectively.

The subfamily Cryptarchinae Thomson, 1859 from Korea is reviewed. This study is the first part of the revision, treating two genera. Here we record Subgenus Glischrochilus Reitter, 1873, genus Pityophagus Shuckard, 1839 for the first time in Korea. Descriptions, photograph of morphological and genital structures and a key to species are provided herein.

Genus Omosita Erichson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae: Nitidulinae) from Korean peninsula

A genus Omosita Erichson, 1843 which belongs to the sap beetle, Nitidulidae, is reviewed from Korea. Two species Omosita colon (Linnaeus, 1758) and O. japonica Reitter, 1874 are previously known from Korea, one species O. discoidea (Fabricius, 1775) is first recorded from Korea. A key to species, re-descriptions, biology, illustrations of both male and female of the genus Omosita are provided.
