        Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in Patients with Schizophrenia in Korea: A Multicenter Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study

        Objective-We designed a nationwide study with limited exclusion criteria to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korea and its relationship with antipsychotic medications. Methods-This multicenter, cross-sectional, and observational study included patients diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Sixteen hospitals enrolled 845 patients aged 18 to 65 years prescribed any antipsychotic medication between August 2011 and August 2013. MetS was diagnosed using the criteria of the modified Adult Treatment Panel III of the National Cholesterol Education Program with the Korean abdominal obesity definition (waist circumference ≥85 cm in women, ≥90 cm in men). Results-The prevalence of MetS in all patients was 36.5% and was significantly higher in men than women (men, 40.8%; women, 32.2%) and was significantly correlated with age [odds ratio (OR) 1.02] and duration of illness (OR 1.03). The prevalence of MetS across antipsychotic drugs in the major monotherapy group was as follows: 18.8% for quetiapine, 22.0% for aripiprazole, 33.3% for both amisulpride and paliperidone, 34.0% for olanzapine, 35% for risperidone, 39.4% for haloperidol, and 44.7% for clozapine. Conclusion-The prevalence of MetS is very high in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Screening and monitoring of MetS is also strongly recommended.

        Differential expression in normal-adenoma-carcinoma sequence suggests complex molecular carcinogenesis in colon.

        <P>The majority of colon cancers develop from pre-existing adenomas. We analyzed the expression profiles in the sequence of normal colon crypts, adenomas and early-stage carcinomas using microdissected cells from tubular adenomas with foci of malignant transformation. Differentially expressed genes were detected between normal-adenoma and adenoma-carcinoma, and were grouped according to the patterns of expression changes in the sequence. Down-regulated genes in the sequence included PLA2G2A, TSPAN1, PDCD4, FCGBP, AATK, EPLIN, FABP1, AGR2, MTUS1, TSC1, galectin 4 and MT1F. PLA2G2A has been shown to suppress colon tumorigenesis in mice, but the pathobiological role in humans has been controversial. Our data showed continuous down-regulation of PLA2G2A in the sequence supporting an implication in human colon cancer. Tumor suppressor and/ or proapoptotic activities have also been reported in other genes. Up-regulated genes included ribosomal proteins, IER3 and TPR. TGF-beta2 and matrix metalloproteinase 23B were up-regulated in carcinoma but not in adenoma, supporting the pathobiological roles in malignant transformation. Differentially expressed genes partly coincided with those in the adenoma-carcinoma sequence of the stomach, which was published previously, suggesting a partial overlap between the adenoma-carcinoma sequences of the colon and stomach.</P>

        Genetic Role of BDNF Val66Met and 5-HTTLPR Polymorphisms on Depressive Disorder

        Objective-We investigated possible association between depressive disorders and BDNF Val66Met and 5-HTTLPR. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene and serotonin transporter (SLC6A4) gene are promising candidate genes for depressive disorders. It has been suggested that BDNF promotes the survival and differentiation of serotonergic neurons and that serotonergic transmission exerts powerful control over BDNF gene expression. Methods-Final analyses were performed on 186 patients with depressive disorders and 1032 controls. Val66Met polymorphism of BDNF gene and 5-HTTLPR polymorphism of serotonin transporter gene were genotyped and allele and genotypic associations on the diagnosis of depression and age at onset of depression were analyzed. Results-The 5-HTTLPR was positively associated with depressive affected status in the total sample and in females (p=0.038 for allelewise, p=0.015 for genotype-wise associations), but, not in males. The BDNF Val66Met showed no association with depression. BDNF Val66Met and 5-HTTLPR alone were not associated with age at onset of depression. Additional analysis on the interaction between BDNF Val66Met and 5-HTTLPR found a significant association with age at onset of depression in the entire patient group. This association was also found in the female but not in the male patient group. None of the positive results survived Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. Conclusion-This result suggested that BDNF Val66Met and 5-HTTLPR may contribute to depressive disorders in a complex way and that the genetic effect could differ by gender. Further studies with large number of patients will be necessary.

        독일 통일 30년: 한반도 통일에 대한 함의

        2020년 10월 3일은 구 동독과 서독이 법적으로 통일을 완성한 지 30주년이 되는 날이다. 독일 통일 30년을 전후로 밝은 면과 어두운 면이 공존하는 상황을 목도하고 있다. 독일 통일 30년은 여전히 미완의 진행형이다. 1990년 이후 15년 간 엄청난 통일비용과 2008년 금융위기로 인하여 독일은 ‘유럽의 병자’로 평가되었다. 그러나 독일 정치지도자의 대내·외교정책 수월성과 민주시민의 자질을 갖춘 독일 국민의 잠재력이 합쳐져서 통일문제를 슬기롭게 극복하였다. 통일 이후 25년 시점부터 성공적 평가가 언급되기 시작하였다. 독일 통일 사례가 한국의 통일 준비와 관련하여 전범(典範)이 될 수 없으나, 통일과 관련된 분명한 방향성과 원칙을 바탕으로 하는 능력과 가용한 재원조달 등의 주도력이 필요하다. 동시에 당사자의 마음과 눈을 적극 고려하면서 세심하게 준비해야 한다. 완벽하게 준비된 사전 종합계획은 불가능하지만 상황이 발생하기 이전에 최대한 세심하게 준비해야 한다. 나아가 통일 한국을 준비하는 우리들에게 새로운 통일 개념이 필요하다. 지금까지 보편적으로 생각하는 ‘統一’(外的 統一: 땅의 통일)을 넘어서 모든 사안을 아우를 수 있는 새로운 ‘通一’(內的 統一: 사람과 마음의 통일)이다. 통일(統一)을 넘어서 하나되는 통합(統合)인 통일(通一)로 나아가야 한다. After 30 years, German unification remains incomplete. The tremendous cost of unification and the global financial crisis of 2008 rendered Germany the “sick man of Europe.” Fortunately, high-quality political leaders and the hard work and commitment to democracy by the German people helped the country surmount those difficulties. Within 25 years, however, views changed and unification was seen as a success, even though problems, such as psychological issues caused by persistent economic differences, persist. German unification cannot be a model for Korea, but it can help uncover differences in circumstances without trial and error. Unification must be based on clear directions and principles, as well as initiative in raising financial resources. While it is impossible to prepare completely, it is necessary to do as much as possible. In this preparation, analysis of the current situation and the 30 years of German unification is crucial. Summarizing the lessons and implications of German unification for Korea requires a new concept of unification. No matter how unified the external conditions of life, this is not true unification. A new perspective and approach are needed. We must recognize, first, that unification is not complete with the simple removal of the armistice line. Resources, wisdom, and determination are required to pass through the “Valley of Tears,” which will accompany the pain. Second, a new concept of unification is needed. We should pursue a unification of people and minds that encompasses all issues beyond the mere unification of territory.

        냉방에너지 저감을 위한 PCM적용 축열벽 시스템 연구

        The regulations to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission in building sectors are being developed and promoted all over the world. However, in Korea, as balcony extension of the apartments has been legally allowed, it became prevalent and resulted in excessive energy consumption. This study derived the possibility of PCM application to the thermal storage wall system through theoretical consideration and investigated the problems occurring when the balcony space has been extended to the diverted space. In addition, this study aims at the possibility of verifying the installation and confirming the cooling energy reduction effect, by conducting measuring tests with the actual installation of PCM applied thermal storage wall system. As a result of theoretical consideration, it is determined that the disadvantages with the existing thermal storage wall system can be complemented by applying PCM, and this study suggests the PCM applied Thermal Storage Wall System. The study was conducted on 1/6 of a miniature inner room of a domestic apartment with 84 ㎡ of exclusive area. From the results of actual measurements, it is confirmed that the balcony extension structure can gain 11.3% of more calories than the existing balcony structure, resulting in the increase in cooling energy usage. It is determined that the installation of the PCM applied Thermal Storage Wall System may gain 25.2% of less calories to reduce cooling energy usage.

        3D 프린터를 이용하여 출력을 하기 위해서는 3D 모델 데이터를 G-code로 변환하는 과정을 수행해야 한다. 일반적으로 3D 모델은 STL 파일 형식으로 저장되는데, 이 파일은 대개 삼각형 형식인 페이셋들의 좌표 데이터를 포함하고 있다. 만약 3D 모델의 크기가 커지거나 정밀도가 높아진다면, 페이셋의 수가 매우 많아지게 되고, 결과적으로 3D 모델에서 G-code로 변환하는 시간이 길어지게 된다. 본 논문에서는 널리 활용되고 있는 Hadoop에서 변환 소프트웨어를 개발하고자 하였다. Hadoop은 마스터 노드와 여러 데이터 노드들이 Map-Reduce 방식으로 작업을 수행한다. 이러한 노드들은 하둡 파일시스템(HDFS)을 공유할 수 있어 작업을 효율적으로 수행할 수 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 이 시스템의 기능을 활용하여 기존에 개발된 분산 알고리즘을 변형한 후 이를 구현하고자 한다.

        Proteomic Analysis of Serum from Patients with Major Depressive Disorder to Compare Their Depressive and Remission Statuses

        Objective-Currently, there are a few biological markers to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of depression. However, it is not sufficient for diagnosis. We attempted to identify differentially expressed proteins during depressive moods as putative diagnostic biomarkers by using quantitative proteomic analysis of serum. Methods-Blood samples were collected twice from five patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) at depressive status before treatment and at remission status during treatment. Samples were individually analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for protein profiling. Differentially expressed proteins were analyzed by label-free quantification. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to validate the differentially expressed proteins. For validation, 8 patients with MDD including 3 additional patients and 8 matched normal controls were analyzed. Results-The quantitative proteomic studies identified 10 proteins that were consistently upregulated or downregulated in 5 MDD patients. ELISA yielded results consistent with the proteomic analysis for 3 proteins. Expression levels were significantly different between normal controls and MDD patients. The 3 proteins were ceruloplasmin, inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain H4 and complement component 1qC, which were upregulated during the depressive status. The depressive status could be distinguished from the euthymic status from the ROC curves for these proteins, and this discrimination was enhanced when all 3 proteins were analyzed together. Conclusion-This is the first proteomic study in MDD patients to compare intra-individual differences dependent on mood. This technique could be a useful approach to identify MDD biomarkers, but requires additional proteomic studies for validation.

        Preliminary study of DDTs variability depending on the egg-laying order of Black-tailed Gull (Larus crassirostris) breeding at Baengnyeongdo, South Korea

        DDTs of Black-tailed Gull (Larus crassirostris) eggs laid on Baengnyeongdo, West Sea of Korea was analyzed to compare the DDTs concentrations of eggs depending on an egg-laying order. The first-laid eggs had higher values in biometrics (length 63.98 ± 0.61 mm, t = 7.6, p < 0.01; width 44.83 ± 0.17 mm, t = 3.2, p < 0.05; weight 67.29 ± 1.20 g, t = 2.6, p = 0.08) than the second-laid eggs (length 62.33 ± 0.41 mm, width 43.52 ± 0.20 mm, and weight 62.21 ± 0.65 g). The concentrations of p,p’-DDE which was only determined in this analysis were not significantly different between the first (mean ± standard error, 218.4 ± 45.3 ng/g wet wt., n = 5, t = -2.0, p = 0.11) and the second-laid eggs (266.7 ± 69.1 ng/g wet wt., n = 5). However, due to the small sample size, it could be difficult to identify the distribution pattern of DDTs concentrations depending on the egg-laying order. Therefore, in order to improve representativeness of eggs sampling method relating to egg-laying order for long-term monitoring of pollutants accumulation, it is necessary to analyze enough sample size in a comparison study of DDTs concentrations depending on egg-laying order and to consider accumulation patterns of other persistent organic pollutants (except DDTs) and also to compare pollutants variability between within-clutch and among-clutches.
