Generally, the use of robots in manufacturing industry has been increased during the past decade. GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding is an actively growing area and many new procedures have been developed for use with high strength alloys. One of the basic requirement for welding applications is to study relationships between process parameters and bead geometry. The objective of this paper is to develop a new approach involving the use of neural network and multiple regression methods in the prediction of bead geometry for GMA welding process and to develop an intelligent system that enables the prediction of bead geometry using Rapid Prototyping(RP) in order to employ the robotic GMA welding processes. This system developed using MATLAB/SIMULINK, could be effectively implemented not only for estimating bead geometry, but also employed to monitor and control the bead geometry in real time

The $[Ru(tpy)_2]Cl_2$ (tpy:2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) complex was synthesized and its structure was confirmed by $^1H$-NMR and elemental analysis. Its binding mode toward DNA was compared with the well-known $[Ru(bpy)_3]Cl_2$ (bpy:2,2-bipyridyl), using isotropic absorption, linear dichroism(LD) spectroscopy, and an energy minimization study. Compared to $[Ru(bpy)_3]^{2+}$, the $[Ru(tpy)_2]^{2+}$ complex exhibited very little change in its absorption pattern, especially in the MLCT band, upon binding to DNA. Furthermore, upon DNA binding, both Ru(II) complexes induced a decrease in the LD magnitude in the DNA absorption region. The $[Ru(tpy)_2]^{2+}$ complex produced a strong positive LD signal in the ligand absorption region, which is in contrast with the $[Ru(bpy)_3]^{2+}$ complex. Observed spectral properties led to the conclusion that the interaction between the ligands and DNA bases is negligible for the $[Ru(tpy)_2]^{2+}$ complex, although it formed an adduct with DNA. This conclusion implies that both complexes bind to the surface of DNA, most likely to negatively charged phosphate groups via a simple electrostatic interaction, thereby orienting to exhibit the LD signal. The energy minimization calculation also supported this conclusion.

Significant therapeutic effects of adult human multipotent neural cells on spinal cord injury

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Neural stem cells are emerging as a regenerative therapy for spinal cord injury (SCI), since they differentiate into functional neural cells and secrete beneficial paracrine factors into the damaged microenvironment. Previously, we successfully isolated and cultured adult human multipotent neural cells (ahMNCs) from the temporal lobes of epileptic patients. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy and treatment mechanism of ahMNCs for SCI using rodent models. When 1 × 10<SUP>6</SUP> ahMNCs were transplanted into injured spinal cords at 7 days after contusion, the injection group showed significantly better functional recovery than the control group (media injection after contusion), which was determined by the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan (BBB) score. Although transplanted ahMNCs disappeared continuously, remained cells expressed differentiated neural cell markers (Tuj1) or astrocyte marker (GFAP) in the injured spinal cords. Moreover, the number of CD31-positive microvessels significantly increased in the injection group than that of the control group. The paracrine pro-angiogenic activities of ahMNCs were confirmed by <I>in vitro</I> tube formation assay and <I>in vivo</I> Matrigel plug assay. Together, these results indicate that ahMNCs have significant therapeutic efficacy in SCI <I>via</I> replacement of damaged neural cells and pro-angiogenic effects on the microenvironment of SCI.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> ahMNCs are neural stem cell-like cells derived from adult human temporal lobes. </LI> <LI> ahMNCs have significant preclinical therapeutic effects on spinal cord injury. </LI> <LI> ahMNCs differentiate into astrocytes, neurons, and oligodendrocytes in damaged spinal cords. </LI> <LI> ahMNCs increase microvessel density significantly in damaged spinal cords. </LI> </UL> </P>
보육교사의 구강건강, 구강건강영향지수 및 전신건강지수의 관련성

본 연구는 2011년 7월 23일부터 2011년 7월 26일까지 부산에 근무하고 있는 보육교사 205명을 대상으로 구강건강, 구강건강영향지수와 전신건강지수 관련성을 알아보고자 설문지를 자기기입식으로 작성하도록 하였으며 다 음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 구강보건지식은 구강보건실천에 대하여 γ=.155, t=2.539로 유의한 효과를 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 식생활행태에는 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 구강보건실천정도는 구강건강영향지수에 β=-.001, t=-.008로 영향을 미치지 않았고, 식생활행태는 구강건강영향지수에 β=.172, t=2.560으로 유의한 영향을 미치고 있었 다. 구강건강영향지수는 전신건강지수에 β=.582, t=10.275로 유의하게 영향을 미치고 있었다. 이상의 결과 보육교사들의 구강건강, 구강건강영향지수와 전신건강지수의 관련성을 분석하여 구강건강증진을 위한 프로그램 개발에 힘을 써 구강병을 예방하고, 보육교사들뿐만 아니라 영유아의 건강과 구강건강을 증진시키고, 나아가 구강건강영향지수를 향상 시킬 것이다. The purpose of the study is to investigate the factors affecting the quality life of oral health according to the knowledge and behavior related with oral health and childcare teachers. Total 205 childcare teacher who working in Busan participated in this survey. The knowledge on oral health has an effects on oral health practice with γ=.155 and t=2.539 but this doesn't show meaningful effects on dietary pattern. Oral health is not affected by oral health practice with β=-.001, t=-.008 but dietary patterm has an effects on oral health impact profile with β=.172, t=2.560. Oral health impact profile show meaningful effects on total health index with β=.582, t=10.275. The results show that the oral health program for childcare teacher should be developed to prevent oral disease and oral health impact profile should be improved for not only childcare teachers but also children.
A Thermodynamic Study on the Interaction of Quinolone Antibiotics and DNA

Fluorescence of quinolones including norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and S- and R-ofloxacin is quenched upon association with single and double-stranded DNA (ss- and ds-DNA). The ratios of fluorescence intensity in the presence of DNA to its absent were plotted with respect to the DNA concentration to construct the Stern-Volmer plot. The slope of the Stern-Volmer plot become larger as the temperature is lowered, ensuring that the fluorescence quenching is static process, i.e., the fluorescence is quenched by formation of the non-fluorescent complex between quinolone and DNA. In the static quenching mechanism, the quenching constant which is equivalent to the slope of the Stern-Volmer plot, is considered as the equilibrium constant for the association of quinolones and DNA. From the temperature-dependent equilibrium constant, ${\Delta}H^0\;and\;{\Delta}S^0$ was obtained using the van’t Hoff relation. In general, association of the quinolone with ds- as well as ss-DNA is energetically favorable (an exothermic) process while the entropy change was unfavorable. Due to the steric effect of the substituents, the effect of the quinolone ring is smaller on the ss-DNA compared to ds-DNA.
