The hospitality, tourism, and travel (HTT) industry has a significant environmental impact due to its water, energy, and waste production. One of the main challenges faced by the HTT industry is the reduction of the negative environmental impact of hotel businesses. Recent studies have shown that consumers are willing to pay a premium for green hotels that adopt environmentally friendly practices to minimize their impact on the environment. While interest in these practices has been increasing, not all consumers are familiar with actual benefits of green hotels. Therefore, it is necessary to employ strategies to increase consumers’ awareness and encourage positive pre-purchasing decisions when selecting a green hotel.

Identification of three wood decay fungi in Yeoninsan Provincial Park, Korea

Though several wood decay fungi have been reported in the world-wide, only about 600 wood decay fungi have been reported in Korea to date. Thus, the objective of this study was to secure resources for the wood decay fungi in Korea. We investigated wood decay fungi in Yeoninsan Provincial Park, Korea, and the collected specimens were identified based on ITS sequence analysis. Two species were unrecorded species in Korea: Postia hirsuta (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) and Hyphodontia reticulata (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota). Another species was previously reported without detailed description: Ceriporia alachuana (Polyporales, Basidiomycota). Here, we provided additional detailed microscopic features and phylogenetic analysis of these species.

The Effect of Korean FDI on Intra Industry Trade : The case of Korean FDI in China and the USA

This paper examines Korea's intra industry trade (IIT) by distinguishing vertical IIT from horizontal IIT, and analyzes the determinants of both these kinds of IIT in Korea's trade with China and the USA during the period from 1991 2005. The independent variables used in this study are foreign direct investment (FDI), level of technology, and the number of commodities in each industry. Vertical IIT (VIIT) comprised 80 percent of Korea's IIT with China in 2005; high quality IIT was the highest of the IIT indices in China and increased faster than horizontal IIT and low quality IIT, implying that Korea's product quality in its trade with China has improved over time. Low quality IIT comprised 65 percent of Korea's IIT with the USA in 2005, and is the highest of Korea's IIT indices in the USA. The regression results show that Korea's FDIs in China have increased high quality IIT. In contrast, Korea's FDIs in the USA decreased high quality IIT, but increased low quality IIT, which was not even robust. The relation of Korea's FDI in China and IIT appear complementary. However, Korea's FDI in the USA and IIT appears to be a substitute rather than a complement. In Korea's IIT with both countries, the higher Korea's technology level, the larger Korea's IIT.

Investigation of Filamentous Fungi Producing Safe, Functional Water-Soluble Pigments

The production of water-soluble pigments by fungal strains indigenous to South Korea was investigated to find those that are highly productive in submerged culture. Among 113 candidates, 34 strains that colored the inoculated potato dextrose agar medium were selected. They were cultured in potato dextrose broth and extracted with ethanol. The productivity, functionality (radical-scavenging activities), and color information (CIELAB values) of the pigment extracts were measured. Five species produced intense yellowish pigments, and two produced intense reddish pigments that ranked the highest in terms of absorbance units produced per day. The pigment extracts of Penicillium miczynskii, Sanghuangporus baumii, Trichoderma sp. 1, and Trichoderma afroharzianum exhibited high radical-scavenging activity. However, the S. baumii extract showed moderate toxicity in the acute toxicity test, which limits the industrial application of this pigment. In conclusion, P. miczynskii KUC1721, Trichoderma sp. 1 KUC1716, and T. afroharzianum KUC21213 were the best fungal candidates to be industrial producers of safe, functional water-soluble pigments.

As one of the biggest service-oriented industries worldwide, the hotel industry significantly contributes to environmental degradation in several ways. Service marketers, consumers, and policy makers are increasingly aware of the damage that excessive natural resources depletion in the guise of water and energy consumption and CO2 emissions by hotels might bring about to the planet. As a result of the growing global concern about climate change, there has been an increase in consumer demand for environmentally-responsible hospitality options. One such option is green hotels, which are environmentally-conscious hospitality properties that are gaining popularity worldwide at a rapid pace. Consumers who prioritize eco-friendliness are willing to pay a premium for green hotels. However, unlike tangible products, services such as hotel experiences are subjective, emotional, and therefore, difficult to evaluate before actual usage. One of the prominent ways in which consumers assess green hotels’ credibility is through user generated content in the form of reviews.
