      • Discovery of urinary metabolomic biomarkers for early detection of acute kidney injury

        <P>The discovery of new biomarkers for early detection of drug-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is clinically important. In this study, sensitive metabolomic biomarkers identified in the urine of rats were used to detect cisplatin-induced AKI. Cisplatin (10 mg kg(-1), i.p.) was administered to Sprague-Dawley rats, which were subsequently euthanized after 1, 3 or 5 days. In cisplatin-treated rats, mild histopathological alterations were noted at day 1, and these changes were severe at days 3 and 5. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (SCr) levels were significantly increased at days 3 and 5. The levels of new urinary protein-based biomarkers, including kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), glutathione S-transferase-alpha (GST-alpha), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), calbindin, clusterin, neutrophil, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), and osteopontin, were significantly elevated at days 3 and 5. Among urinary metabolites, trigonelline and 3-indoxylsulfate (3-IS) levels were significantly decreased in urine collected from cisplatin-treated rats prior to histological kidney damage. However, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), a hepatotoxicant, did not affect these urinary biomarkers. Trigonelline is closely associated with GSH depletion and results in insufficient antioxidant capacity against cisplatin-induced AKI. The predominant cisplatin-induced AKI marker appeared to be reduced in urinary 3-IS levels. Because 3-IS is predominantly excreted via active secretion in proximal tubules, a decrease is indicative of tubular damage. Further, urinary excretion of 3-IS levels was markedly reduced in patients with AKI compared to normal subjects. The area under the curve receiver operating characteristics (AUC-ROC) for 3-IS was higher than for SCr, BUN, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total protein, and glucose. Therefore, low urinary or high serum 3-IS levels may be more useful for early detection of AKI than conventional biomarkers.</P>

        The Longitudinal Trend of Cardiac Surgery in Korea from 2003 to 2013

        Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate longitudinal changes of the utilization of operational and surgical medical care inside and outside a metropolitan area over 10 years, analyzing the residential areas of patients and the locations of medical facilities for major cardiovascular surgery. Methods: Data analysis was conducted by classifying the addresses of patients and the locations of medical care facilities of metropolitan cities and provinces, using data from the National Health Insurance Corporation from January 2003 to December 2013. Results: There is serious concentration of major heart surgery to medical facilities in Seoul; this problem has not improved over time. There were differences in percentages of surgical procedures performed in the metropolitan areas according to major diseases. In the case of Busan and Daegu provinces, at least 50% of the patients underwent surgery in medical facilities in the city, but there are other regions where the percentage is less than 50%. In the case of provinces, the percentage of surgical procedures performed in medical facilities in Seoul or nearby metropolitan cities is very high. Conclusion: Policies to strengthen the regional capabilities of heart surgery and to secure human resources are required to mitigate the concentration of patients in the capital area. Many regional multi-centers must be designated to minimize unnecessary competition among regional university hospitals and activate a win-win partnership model for medical services.

        전남 가거도의 식물상

        가거도는 전남 신안군 흑산면에 속하는 한국의 최서남단에 위치한 섬이다. 가거도의 관속식물은 93과 246속 289종7아종 36변종 9품종으로 총 341분류군으로 조사되었다. 열매가 노란색인 참식나무의 새로운 품종이 발견되어 노랑참식나무 Neolitsea sericea (Bl.) Koidz. for. koreana M. Kim 라고 명명하였다. 가거도의 특산식물은 흑산도비비추, 처진물봉선, 새끼노루귀, 개족도리풀 등 8종이 발견되었으며, 희귀 및 멸종위기식물은 박달목서와 으름난초 등 3종이 발견되었다. 식물지리학적으로 흥미있는 종은 푸른가막살, 가거꼬리고사리, 가거애기닥나무 등 9종이다. 귀화식물은 11종이며 귀화율은 3.2%이다. Vascular plants of Island Gageo in Jellonamdo were investigated 10 times from August, 2005 to August, 2011. In the result of survey, the flora of this island consists of 341 taxa totally; 93 families, 246 genera, 289 species, 7 subspecies, 36 varieties and 9 forms. Yellow-fruit bearing plants of Neolitsea sericea which were found in this island are newly named as Neolitsea sericea (Bl.) Koidz. for. koreana M. Kim. There were 8 Korean endemic plants such as Hosta yingeri, Impatiens furcillata, Saussurea pseudo-gracilis, etc. Also 3 Korean endangered species which is designating by Ministry of Environment such as Osmanthus insularis and Cyrtosia septentrionalis and 9 rare and remarkable species such as Viburnum japonicum, Asplenium yoshinagae, Broussonetia kazinoki for. koreana, etc. were found in this island. Furthermore, 11 taxa of naturalized plants (3.2%) were also observed in this island.

        Migratory Beekeeping Information System: Application to the Study of Distribution and Movement Patterns of Migratory Beehives in South Korea during the Honey Flow Period

        Migratory beekeeping has both ecological and economic benefits. The practice, however, has certain drawbacks such as risk of disease transmission and pesticide exposure. The use of Geographic Information Systems (GISs) in migratory beekeeping can potentially mitigate such drawbacks. However, in South Korea, research on or initiatives to incorporate GIS into beekeeping practices are lacking. To address this research gap and to enhance the effectiveness of migratory beekeeping, we have developed a system that incorporates GPS and temperature-humidity sensors into beehives to provide geographical information-based services to beekeepers. To evaluate the utility of this system, we distributed it to 39 migratory beekeepers. As a result, we were able to obtain location information and meteorological data around the migratory beehives during the honey flow season. Furthermore, we collected location information from 19 beehives that moved over 1 km during the study period and calculated the distances traveled. Notably, in early to mid-May, the majority of beehives were distributed in central and northern regions at latitudes 36.4°N or higher, making up more than 70% of the total. However, after June, approximately 40% of the beehives were found to be located in southern regions at latitudes 36°N or lower. The distances traveled by the beehives were longest in early to mid-May and exhibited a temporary increase in mid-June. These results closely corresponded to the general flowering patterns and geographical locations of acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia) and chestnut (Castanea crenata) trees. This study provides empirical data on the routes and distribution of migratory beekeepers during the honey flow season in South Korea, making it a valuable resource for tailoring research and policies to meet the needs of migratory beekeepers.

        Salphen H<sub>2</sub> as a Neutral Carrier for the Uranyl Ion-Selective PVC Membrane Sensor

        The complexation of N,N'-4,5-(ethylenedioxy)benzenebis(salicylideneimine), (salphen$H_2$) with uranyl ion was studied in acetonitrile solution spectrophtometrically, and the formation constant of the resulting 1 : 1 complex was evaluated. The salphen$H_2$ ligand was used as an ionophore in plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) matrix membrane sensor for uranyl ion. The prepared sensors exhibited a near Nernstian response, 28.0-30.9 mV/decade for uranyl ion over the concentration range $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-2}$ to $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$M with a limit of detection of $3.2\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$ M. The proposed electrode could be used at a working pH range of 1.5 - 4.0.

        <P>Although protein kinase Cδ (PKCδ) has been suggested in the negative control of the cell cycle machinery in many types of cancer cells, its underlying mechanisms are partly understood. Here we report that the expression of apoptosis signal-regulating kinase1 (ASK1) is inducible in a PKCδ-dependent manner, and contributes to phorbol ester-induced cell cycle arrest through persistent JNK activation in breast cancer epithelial cells. Activation of PKC with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) gradually up-regulated the expression of ASK1 mRNA and protein, and subsequently enhanced its catalytic activity in MCF-7 cells. Importantly, such PMA-induced ASK1 expression was completely abolished by pretreatment of rottlerin, a specific PKCδ inhibitor or by knocking down the expression of PKCδ, while ectopic expression of a constitutively active form of PKCδ strongly up-regulated ASK1 expression. We also found that the persistent activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase, JNK in response to PMA was greatly attenuated by RNA interference-mediated knockdown of ASK1. Taken together, these results suggest that inducible expression of ASK1 by PKCδ contributes to the G1 arrest by enhancing persistent JNK signaling activation which represents a novel alternative mechanism of PKCδ-dependent cell cycle arrest and limiting proliferation of breast cancer epithelial cells.</P>

      • Stent Insertion and Balloon Angioplasty for Portal Vein Stenosis after Liver Transplantation: Long-Term Follow-Up Results

        Aims: This study aimed to conduct a long-term retrospective study of transhepatic percutaneous intervention and to find a method to reduce the need for additional procedures. Methods: Between January 2001 and December 2015, 283 patients underwent deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT), and 1086 patients underwent living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Seven (2.4%) of the 283 DDLT patients and 24 (2.2%) of the 1086 LDLT patients were diagnosed with portal vein stenosis. We evaluated technical and clinical success and long term results. Results: Technical success was achieved in 100% of balloon angioplasties and stent insertions, and clinical success was achieved in 78% of balloon angioplasties and in 100% of primary stent insertions. At 1, 5, and 10 years after balloon angioplasty, the rates of primary patency were 87%, 82%, and 68%, respectively, and the rates of primary stent patency were all 100%. The portal vein size in non-recurrence patients and recurrence patients was 19 ± 4.2 mm and 19 ± 3.0 mm (P=0.956), respectively. The balloon size of the non-recurrence patients and recurrence patients was 14 ± 1.66 and 11 ± 1.95, respectively (P=0.013), when balloon angioplasty was performed after a diagnosis of stenosis. Conclusions: Balloon angioplasty showed lower risk of anastomotic rupture than we are concerned and may be safe and effective at an early portal vein stenosis(PVS). Also, primary stent insertion should be considered when fibrotic change is expected due to reoccurring inflammation and when the balloon size to be used is small.

      • Near-Ultraviolet-Sensitive Graphene/Porous Silicon Photodetectors

        <P>Porous silicon (PSi) is recognized as an attractive building block for photonic devices because of its novel properties including high ratio of surface to volume and high light absorption. We first report near-ultraviolet (UV)-sensitive graphene/PSi photodetectors (PDs) fabricated by utilizing graphene and PSi as a carrier collector and a photoexcitation layer, respectively. Thanks to high light absorption and enlarged energy-band gap of PSi, the responsivity (<I>R</I><SUB>i</SUB>) and quantum efficiency (QE) of the PDs are markedly enhanced in the near-UV range. The performances of PDs are systemically studied for various porosities of PSi, controlled by varying the electroless-deposition time (<I>t</I><SUB>d</SUB>) of Ag nanoparticles for the use of Si etching. Largest gain is obtained at <I>t</I><SUB>d</SUB> = 3 s, consistent with the maximal enhancement of <I>R</I><SUB>i</SUB> and QE in the near UV range, which originates from the well-defined interface at the graphene/PSi junction, as proved by atomic- and electrostatic-force microscopies. Optimized response speed is ∼10 times faster compared to graphene/single-crystalline Si PDs. These and other unique PD characteristics prove to be governed by typical Schottky diode-like transport of charge carriers at the graphene/PSi junctions, based on bias-dependent variations of the band profiles, resulting in novel dark- and photocurrent behaviors.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2014/aamick.2014.6.issue-23/am5053812/production/images/medium/am-2014-053812_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/am5053812'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
