      • Analysis, control, and economic impact assessment of major blackout events

        Yamashita, Koji,Joo, Sung-Kwan,Li, Juan,Zhang, Pei,Liu, Chen-Ching John Wiley Sons, Ltd. 2008 European transactions on electrical power Vol.18 No.8

<P>Recent large-scale blackouts in North America, Europe, and other countries raised great concerns over the reliability of our electric energy infrastructure and the economic impacts of blackouts. These blackouts were caused by a cascading sequence of events involving line outages, overloading of other lines, malfunctions of protection systems, power oscillations and voltage problems, and system separation and collapse. In this paper, common characteristics of blackouts are identified by analyzing the cascaded events of the blackouts. It is important to take appropriate control actions to alleviate overload and emergency conditions in a power system in order to avoid catastrophic power outages. This paper discusses available control procedures and emergency control systems needed to help prevent catastrophic outages. Economic losses from these blackouts in the U.S., Europe, and other countries were significant. An evaluation of the economic costs of blackouts can be used to estimate the benefits of emergency control systems that can be installed to prevent blackouts. This paper provides an overview of the assessment methods and procedures for evaluation of the economic costs of blackouts. This paper also describes the generic procedure of an event study to measure the economic impact of blackouts on the values of the firms in financial markets. Crystallization of an Amorphous Si Thin Film by Using Pulsed Rapid Thermal Annealing with Ni-Ferritin

        Yukihary Uraoka,Koji Yamasaki,Masahiro Ochi,Ichiro Yamashita,Yuta Sugawara 한국물리학회 2010 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.56 No.3

We proposed the fabrication method for high quality polycrystalline silicon thin films by using the Ni core of ferritin with a diameter of 7 nm. Amorphous silicon thin films with Ni cores of ferritin were crystallized by using a pulsed rapid thermal annealing (PRTA) method to short the crystallization time. Lateral growth with increasing pulse numbers was confirmed. In order to analyze the crystallinity of the film, we performed electron backscatter diffraction pattern (EBSD)and Raman analysis. A poly-Si thin film with an average crystal grain size of 5.4 µm was obtained for a low-density Ni core in less than a minute. The crystallinity of the poly-Si with a Ni core fabricated by using PRTA was almost the same as that of poly-Si with a Ni core that required 24h to fabricate. This method is promising for a low-cost fabrication of high-performance thin film transistors.

Crystallization by Green-laser Annealing for Three-dimensional Device Application

        Yumi Kawamura,Koji Yamasaki,Takehiko Yamashita,Yuta Sugawara,Yukiharu Uraoka,Mutsumi Kimura 한국물리학회 2010 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.56 No.5

We report the crystallization of multilayer polycrystalline Si (poly-Si) thin films by green laser annealing with potential applications to three-dimensional devices. We investigated single-, doubleand triple-layer poly-Si thin films crystallized by GLA. The crystallinity of the green-laser-annealed (GLA) poly-Si films was improved by employing a multilayer structure; larger crystal grains were obtained at a lower power than the case of a single layer. We applied the GLA multilayer poly-Si thin films to the fabrication of thin film transistors (TFTs) and thin-film photodiodes. Through a comparison of their performance, we demonstrated the superiority of multilayer crystallization.

Predicted voltinism of the camellia spiny whitefly, Aleurocanthus camelliae (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), in major Japanese tea-producing districts based on life history parameters

        Atsushi Kasai,Koji Yamashita,Yutaka Yoshiyasu 한국응용곤충학회 2012 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.15 No.2

We examined the temperature-dependent development, adult longevity, fertility, and sex ratio of the whitefly Aleurocanthus camelliae, which infests tea plants, under laboratory conditions. Eggs and nymphs were reared on tea shoots at 20, 22.5, 25, and 27.5 °C with a photoperiod of 15L:9D. The developmental zero of the egg, total nymphal stadia, and egg–adult duration of A. camelliae were 12.6, 11.6, and 11.9 °C, respectively, with thermal constants of 176.7, 394.7, and 569.9 d-degrees, respectively. The mean longevities of adult female and male A. camelliae were 4.4 and 2.7 d, respectively. These results suggested A. camelliae voltinism of two to three generations per year in Kanto, Tokai, and Kinki districts and three to five generations per year in the Shikoku and Kyushu districts, Japan.

Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor administered immediately after radical prostatectomy temporarily increases the need for incontinence pads, but improves final continence status

        Yasuhiro Kaiho,Shinichi Yamashita,Akihiro Ito,Yoshihide Kawasaki,Hideaki Izumi,Naoki Kawamorita,Hisanobu Adachi,Koji Mitsuzuka,Yoichi Arai 대한비뇨의학회 2016 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.57 No.5

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5i) on urinary continence recovery after bilateral nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy (BNSRP). Materials and Methods: Between 2002 and 2012, 137 of 154 consecutive patients who underwent BNSRP in our institution retrospectively divided into 3 groups that included patients taking PDE5i immediately after surgery (immediate PDE5i group, n=41), patients starting PDE5i at an outpatient clinic after discharge (PDE5i group, n=56), and patients taking no medication (non-PDE5i group, n=40). Using self-administered questionnaires, the proportion of patients who did not require incontinence pads (pad-free patients) was calculated preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after BNSRP. Severity of incontinence was determined based on the pad numbers and then compared among the 3 groups. Results: Proportions of pad-free patients and severity of incontinence initially deteriorated in all of the groups to the lowest values soon after undergoing BNSRP, with gradual improvement noted thereafter. The deterioration was most prominent in the immediate PDE5i group. As compared to the non-PDE5i group, both the PDE5i and immediate PDE5i groups exhibited a better final continence status. Conclusions: PDE5i improves final continence status. However, administration of PDE5i immediately after surgery causes a distinct temporary deterioration in urinary incontinence.

Impact of Tumor Location on the Quality of Life of Patients Undergoing Total or Proximal Gastrectomy

        Fujisaki Muneharu,Nomura Takashi,Yamashita Hiroharu,Uenosono Yoshikazu,Fukunaga Tetsu,Otsuji Eigo,Takahashi Masahiro,Matsumoto Hideo,Oshio Atsushi,Nakada Koji 대한위암학회 2022 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.22 No.3

Purpose Most studies have investigated the differences in postgastrectomy quality of life (QOL) based on the surgical procedure or reconstruction method adopted; only a few studies have compared QOL based on tumor location. This large-scale study aims to investigate the differences in QOL between patients with esophagogastric junction cancer (EGJC) and those with upper third gastric cancer (UGC) undergoing the same gastrectomy procedure to evaluate the impact of tumor location on postoperative QOL. Methods The Postgastrectomy Syndrome Assessment Scale-45 (PGSAS-45) questionnaire was distributed in 70 institutions to 2,364 patients who underwent gastrectomy for EGJC or UGC. A total of 1,909 patients were eligible for the study, and 1,744 patients who underwent total gastrectomy (TG) or proximal gastrectomy (PG) were selected for the final analysis. These patients were divided into EGJC and UGC groups; thereafter, the PGSAS-45 main outcome measures (MOMs) were compared between the two groups for each type of gastrectomy. Results Among the post-TG patients, only one MOM was significantly better in the UGC group than in the EGJC group. Conversely, among the post-PG patients, postoperative QOL was significantly better in 6 out of 19 MOMs in the UGC group than in the EGJC group. Conclusions Tumor location had a minimal effect on the postoperative QOL of post-TG patients, whereas among post-PG patients, there were definite differences in postoperative QOL between the two groups. It seems reasonable to conservatively estimate the benefits of PG in patients with EGJC compared to those in patients with UGC. Different Associations of Plasma Biomarkers in Alzheimer’s Disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, Vascular Dementia, and Ischemic Stroke

        Jingwei Shang,Toru Yamashita,Yusuke Fukui,Dongjing Song,Xianghong Li,Yun Zhai,Yumiko Nakano,Ryuta Morihara,Nozomi Hishikawa,Yasuyuki Ohta,Koji Abe 대한신경과학회 2018 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.14 No.1

Background and Purpose Cognitive and cerebrovascular diseases are common in the elderly, but differences in the plasma levels and associations of plasma biomarkers in these diseases remain elusive. Methods The present study investigated differences in plasma fatty acids [eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)], adiponectin, reptin, plasma markers of inflammation [high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and serum amyloid A (serum AA)], and plasma lipids [high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)] in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (n=266), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (n=44), vascular dementia (VaD) (n=33), and ischemic stroke (IS) (n=200) in comparison to normal controls (n=130). Results The serological data showed that lower EPA and DHA levels and higher reptin and LDL levels were associated with AD and IS, the reptin/adiponectin ratio was strongly associated with IS, the hsCRP level was more strongly associated with VaD and IS, and the serum AA level was associated with all three cognitive diseases and IS. Conclusions This is the first report of differences in the expression levels of plasma biomarkers and peripheral arterial tonometry among AD, MCI, VaD, and IS patients and normal controls. These different associations indicate that diverse pathological mechanisms underlie these diseases

Clinical predictors of the estimated glomerular filtration rate 1 year after radical nephrectomy in Japanese patients

        Shuichi Shimada,Hideo Saito,Yoshihide Kawasaki,Shinichi Yamashita,Hisanobu Adachi,Narihiko Kakoi,Takashige Namima,Masahiko Sato,Atsushi Kyan,Koji Mitsuzuka,Akihiro Ito,Takuhiro Yamaguchi,Yoichi Arai 대한비뇨의학회 2017 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.58 No.4

Purpose: To evaluate renal function 1 year after radical nephrectomy (RN) for renal cell carcinoma, the preoperative predictors of postnephrectomy renal function were investigated by sex, and equations to predict the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 1 year after RN were developed. Materials and Methods: A total of 525 patients who underwent RN between May 2007 and August 2011 at Tohoku University Hospital and its affiliated hospitals were prospectively evaluated. Overall, 422 patients were analyzed in this study. Results: Independent preoperative factors associated with postnephrectomy renal function were different in males and females. Preoperative eGFR, age, tumor size, and body mass index (BMI) were independent factors in males, while tumor size and BMI were not independent factors in females. The equations developed to predict eGFR 1 year after RN were: Predicted eGFR in males (mL/min/1.73 m2)=27.99−(0.196×age)+(0.497×eGFR)+(0.744×tumor size)−(0.339×BMI); and predicted eGFR in females=44.57−(0.275×age)+(0.298×eGFR). The equations were validated in the validation dataset (R2=0.63, p<0.0001 and R2=0.31, p<0.0001, respectively). Conclusions: The developed equations by sex enable better prediction of eGFR 1 year after RN. The equations will be useful for preoperative patient counseling and selection of the type of surgical procedure in elective partial or RN cases.
