Catalytic synthesis of the ZnO-carbon nanofilament composite for sensor applications

We have studied to synthesize a ZnO-carbon nanofilament composite (ZnO-CNF) as it is expected to yield an interesting properties for sensor applications. The ZnO-CNF is considered to have a large surface area and a high electrical conductivity. The ZnO-supported Co catalysts were used for the synthesis of the ZnO-CNF. In order to fabricate a pattern of the composite for a biosensor, we have tried to prepare a paste from the composite for a screen-printing. We found that Co loaded catalysts exhibited a high catalytic activity for the carbon yields. SEM observation revealed that fibriform carbon deposits were obtained on the surface of the ZnO powder. In the case of using the Co-loaded ZnO catalyst, we found that the diameter of the fibriform carbon nanomaterial depended on the C2H4 concentration in the reaction gas. The reaction conditions are important to control the diameter of the fibriform carbon nanomaterial. The ZnO-CNF paste consisted of the ZnO-CNF, ethyl cellulose, and 2-(2-Butoxyethoxy) ethanol was prepared. The line patterns having 150μm were successfully fabricated with using the paste by screen-printing method.
Selection of appropriate terms for a subjective evaluation of video game contents

This study investigated appropriate evaluation terms representing video game characteristics. First, many terms for evaluating video games were collected from game magazines and user questionnaires. Next, an experiment of video game evaluation, in which experimental subjects evaluated the game characteristics after playing 20 video games, were performed for extracting the appropriate evaluation terms. As a result, six kinds of evaluation terms of ”innovative,” ”fantasy,” ”length of waiting time,” ”reality,” ”comical,” and ”enjoyable with many people” were selected as the appropriate evaluation terms for video games using statistical analysis.

Co-doping diamond is of scientific and technologically interest because a new electrical and/or optical property is expected to obtain. In this study, we have carried out a simultaneous addition of diborane and nitrogen in the gas phase for the growth of co-doping diamonds by microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) method. We measured the cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra of the co-doping diamond films. To investigate the effect of boron-nitrogen co-doping addition on the CL spectra, we compared the CL spectra of boron-nitrogen co-doping diamonds with those of nitrogen-doped diamonds. The results revealed that the addition of boron suppressed the nitrogen incorporation into the CVD diamonds.
Feline Herpes Virus-1 Associated Facial and Perianal Dermatitis in a Cat

We herein describe a feline case of facial dermatitis whose histopathological features resembled to those of FHV-associated ulcerative dermatitis. A 3-year-old, intact male domestic short-haired cat was presented with 2-years history of pruritic dermatitis that initially appeared on periocular area and extended toward the entire face. The cat had ocular discharge and conjunctivitis from 2-month of age. Clinically, skin lesions were characterized as erythema,erosions and ulcers covered with crusts on the facial and perianal area. Histopathologically, the facial lesion was characterized as interface dermatitis with hydropic degeneration at the basal layer, and single cell necrosis of keratinocytes. In addition, the epidermal and dermal necrosis infiltrated with eosinophils, and intranuclear inclusion bodies in keratinocytes were also recognized. Moreover, feline herpesvirus-1 gene was detected by a PCR analysis using a swab obtained from the crusted lesions. Based upon these findings, the present case was considered as having FHV-associated ulcerative dermatitis. Therapy including oral acyclovir and topical recombinant feline interferon omega resulted in marked improvement of the skin and mucosal lesions.

Background/Aims: Many Japanese institutions use electromagnetic extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) systems for treating pancreatic duct stones. However, there are no reports on direct comparisons between recent electromagnetic lithotripters. This study aimed to verify whether the new electromagnetic lithotripter can improve the efficiency of pancreatic stone fragmentation, and to clarify the role of combined endoscopic treatment on the clearance of pancreatic duct stones. Methods: We retrospectively identified 208 patients with pancreatolithiasis who underwent endoscopic adjunctive treatment after pancreatic ESWL at a single Japanese center over a 17-year period. We evaluated the outcome data of this procedure performed with SLX-F2 (last 2 years; group A) and Lithostar/Lithoskop (first 15 years; group B), as well as additional endoscopic treatments for pancreatolithiasis. We also performed logistic regression analysis to detect various factors associated with the procedure. Results: For pancreatic head stones, ESWL disintegration was achieved in 93.7% of group A patients and 69.0% of group B patients (p=0.004), and adjunctive endoscopic treatment removed stones in 96.8% of group A patients and 73.0% of group B patients (p=0.003). Multivariate analysis revealed that lithotripter type (odds ratio, 6.99; 95% confidence interval, 1.56 to 31.33; p<0.01) and main pancreatic duct stricture (odds ratio, 2.87; 95% confidence interval, 1.27 to 6.45; p<0.01) were significant factors for ESWL fragmentation. Conclusions: The SLX F2 showed high performance in fragmenting the pancreatic duct stones. In addition, endoscopic adjunctive treatment improved the overall success rate of the procedure. The improved ESWL lithotripter has many advantages for patients undergoing pancreatic lithotripsy treatment.

Background/Aims: Endoscopic evaluation of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) is useful in determining whetherthe lesions are benign or malignant. This study aimed to examine the usefulness of peroral pancreatoscopy (POPS) in determiningthe prognosis of IPMNs. Methods: POPS with videoscopy was performed using the mother–baby scope technique. After surgery, computed tomography/magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography or ultrasonography and blood tests were performed every 6 months during thefollow-up. Results: A total of 39 patients with main pancreatic duct (MPD)–type IPMNs underwent POPS using a videoscope, and theprotrusions in the MPD were observed in 36 patients. The sensitivity and specificity of cytology/biopsy performed at the time ofPOPS were 85% and 87.5%, respectively. Of 19 patients who underwent surgery, 18 (95%) patients had negative surgical margins and1 (5%) patient had a positive margin. Conclusions: In IPMNs with dilatation of the MPD, POPS is considered effective if the lesions can be directly observed. Thediagnosis of benign and malignant lesions is possible depending on the degree of lesion elevation. However, in some cases, slightlyelevated lesions may increase in size during the follow-up or multiple lesions may be simultaneously present; therefore, carefulfollow-up is necessary.
