        Nonlinear finite element analysis of top- and seat-angle with double web-angle connections

        Four finite element (FE) models are examined to find the one that best estimates moment-rotation characteristics of top- and seat-angle with double web-angle connections. To efficiently simulate the real behavior of connections, finite element analyses are performed with following considerations: 1) all components of connection (beam, column, angles and bolts) are discretized by eight-node solid elements; 2) shapes of bolt shank, head, and nut are precisely taken into account in modeling; and 3) contact surface algorithm is applied as boundary condition. To improve accuracy in predicting moment-rotation behavior of a connection, bolt pretension is introduced before the corresponding connection moment being surcharged. The experimental results are used to investigate the applicability of FE method and to check the performance of three-parameter power model by making comparison among their moment-rotation behaviors and by assessment of deformation and stress distribution patterns at the final stage of loading. This research exposes two important features: (1) the FE method has tremendous potential for connection modeling for both monotonic and cyclic loading; and (2) the power model is able to predict moment-rotation characteristics of semi-rigid connections with acceptable accuracy.

      • Recent Advances in Dry-bag CIP Equipment

        Intensive technological research on the Dry-bag CIP equipment was carried out to improve the dimensional accuracy and the productivity. The rubber mold design technology using FEM simulation during pressing was introduced, in order to achieve higher dimensional preciseness, and criteria for the selection of the In-line type or Off-line type, were established based on the powder flowability index proposed by Carr. Based on these research results, high productivity Off-line Dry-bag CIP equipment, which can realize good dimensional accuracy with high productivity, was developed even for non-granulated powders with poor packing density.

        Effect of granules on the workability and the recovery of water tightness of crack self-healing concrete

        A fundamental study on whether improvements in self-healing performance can be achieved by mixing into concrete granules of self-healing agent whose main component is geo-materials instead of self-healing agent in powder form, for the purpose of preventing leakage of water through cracks was investigated. The aim of this research is rapid slump loss compensation based on the granulation process of self-healing agent whose main component is geo-materials that have high reactivity with water and includes a long-term retention of the self-healing capability of concrete incorporating self-healing agent. Comparison of concretes commercially prepared by blending in self-healing agent at ready mixed concrete plants established, through laboratory and field tests, that the 40 kg/m3 granule admixtures based on self-healing agent as a fine aggregate replacement improved he slump of ready mixed concrete and showed a high water leakage prevention effect through self-healing of cracks even after the lapse of 8 months.

      • A Decade of the National Institute for Materials Science as an Independent Administrative Institution

        In April 2001, many Japanese national institutes were reorganized as Independent Administrative Institutions (IAI) based on the General Act for Independent Administrative Institutions and the act for each institution. Under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) was established by the merger of the National Research Institute for Metals (NRIM) and the National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials (NIRIM). One of the biggest changes was the expansion of autonomous administration. The nanotechnology and material R&D field was prioritized in the 2nd (2001-2005) and the 3rd (2006-2010) Science and Technology Basic Plans; subsequently, NIMS was assigned to take the initiative in nanotechnology as well as materials science. NIMS has proactively expanded research fields through the introduction of researchers from polymers, electronics, and biotechnology as well as member institutes of the World Materials Research Institute Forum (WMRIF). Globalization has been promoted through programs that include the International Center for Young Scientists (ICYS) and the International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA). The 4th Science and Technology Basic Plan (2011-2015) emphasizes outcomes-recovery and rebirth from the disaster, green innovation, and life innovation. The Midterm Plan for NIMS also follows it. R&D collaboration by multi-partners (that include industry, university, and GRI) should be strategically promoted where GRI are especially required to play a hub function for innovative R&D and open innovation. NIMS highlights are Tsukuba Innovation Arena (TIA) and the Nanotechnology Platform Project. On January 20, 2012, a new organization was decided on by the Japanese Government where several IAI from different science and technology areas will be merged to realize more effective R&D as well as administrative cost reductions. NIMS is also supposed to be merged with 4 other R&D IAI under MEXT by the end of 2013.

        일본 대학에서의 한국어 문화 교육을 위한 기초 연구 - 교재 분석 및 학습자의 한국 문화 인지도와 요구 조사를 중심으로

        본 연구는 일본 대학교 한국어 수업에서의 한국문화 교육 항목을 선정하여 한국문화 교육 방안을 모색하기 위한 기초 자료를 구축하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 한국어 교재를 분석하여 포함된 문화 항목에 대해 살펴보았으며, 또한 설문조사를 통해 일본인 한국어 학습자들의 한국문화에 대한 인지도와 요구를 밝히고자 하였다. 분석 대상 교재는 주로 일본 대학교에서 사용되고 있는 통합교재 총 15권이며, 이 교재들에서 수집된 문화항목을 국내에서 개발된 국제통용한국어교육표준모형의 문화 항목과 비교 분석하였다. 분석 결과 등급보다 상위 등급에 해당하는 문화에 대한 언급이 많았으며 반대로 기본적인 초급 문화 항목인데도 교재에 제시되지 않은 항목도 있었다. 일본인 학습자의 한국 문화에 대한 인지도와 요구에 대한 실태를 파악하기 위하여 일본 대학교에서 한국어 강좌를 수강 중인 학습자 190명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 조사 내용을 분석한 결과 많은 초급 교재에 제시된 문화항목인데도 불구하고 인지도가 낮게 나타난 항목들을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 또한 요구 분석 결과 일본인 학습자들이 선호하는 문화 항목에 대해서도 살펴볼 수 있었다. 본고를 통해 밝힌 연구 결과는 향후 일본 대학교에서의 한국문화 교육 방안을 모색하고, 적절한 문화항목을 선정하는 데 있어서 중요한 기초자료가 될 것이라 판단된다. The objective of this study is to construct basic data for selecting Korean culture education aspects in the Korean language curriculums of the Japanese university. In this regards, we analyzed the Korean textbooks and examined the cultural aspects included. In addition, it was sought to clarify the recognition and the requirements of Japanese learners of Korean culture through the questionnaire. The textbooks which shall be analyzed consisted of 15 integrated textbooks mainly used at the Japanese universities. The cultural aspects collected from these textbooks were compared and analyzed with the culture aspects of the international standard Korean language education standard model developed in Korea. As a result, it showed that there were many references to the culture that ranked higher than the grade. On the contrary, there were some aspects that were not presented in the textbook although they were basic elementary culture aspects. In order to investigate the recognition and requirements of Japanese learners regarding Korean culture, a survey was executed for 190 learners participating in Korean lectures at Japanese universities. As a result of analyzing the result of the survey, it was found that aspects with low awareness even though they were presented in many elementary level textbooks. Also, it was able to examine the cultural aspects preferred by Japanese learners through of the requirement analysis. The findings of this study would suggest that it will be significant basic data for the selection of suitable cultural aspects and teaching method of Korean culture for Japanese learners universities in future.
