Angiosarcomas are rare malignant neoplasms, which mainly occur on the skin and superficial tissue. Angiosarcoma in the small intestine after radiation therapy is very rare and there are less than 20 cases of small-intestine angiosarcoma after pelvic irradiation. We report a case of double cancer with gastric adenocarcinoma and postradiation angiosarcoma of the small intestine which has been diagnosed 20 years after pelvic irradiation therapy for uterine cervical cancer.

I ntensive usage of electronic appliances containing lithium batteries causes an accumulation of e-trash. Environmental exposure to lithium batteries contaminates ecosystems. In air and water, the batteries form lithium hydroxide (LiOH) on their surfaces. LiOH enters the aquatic environment and contaminates the aquatic ecosystem by being absorbed into biological organisms. In this study, in order to identify meaningful potential biomarkers that appear in response to lithium, we measured significantly up- and down-regulated genes after LiOH exposure by conducting a microarray. In addition, we explored the functions of differentially expressed daphnia genes, and we conducted a comparative analysis in other species, Daphnia spp. to humans, then analyzed the signaling pathways using the human gene set derived from daphnia sequences that are differentially expressed in response to LiOH using the NCBI-BLAST tool and Pathway studio. As a result, we identified signaling pathways and suggested several potential biomarkers that are up- or down-regulated in response to lithium. This study may contribute to the development of a biomonitoring system which can detect the ecotoxicity of lithium. Furthermore, lithium toxicity in humans can be predicted, so the study may also provide potential biomarkers of lithium exposure in humans.
Metagenomic Analysis of Fungal Communities Inhabiting the Fairy Ring Zone of Tricholoma matsutake

Tricholoma matsutake, an ectomycorrhiza that has mutual relationships with the rootlet of Pinus denisflora, forms a fruiting body that serves as a valuable food in Asia. However, the artificial culture of this fungus has not been successful. Soil fungi, including T. matsutake, coexist with many other microorganisms and plants; therefore, complex microbial communities have an influence on the fruiting body formation of T. matsutake. Here, we report on the structures of fungal communities associated with the fairy ring of T. matsutake through the pyrosequencing method. Soil samples were collected inside the fairy ring zone, in the fairy ring zone, and outside the fairy ring zone. A total of 37,125 sequencing reads were obtained and 728 to 1,962 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were observed in the sampling zones. The fairy ring zone had the lowest OTUs and the lowest fungal diversity of all sampling zones. The number of OTUs and fungal taxa inside and outside the fairy ring zone was, respectively, about 2 times and 1.5 times higher than the fairy ring. Taxonomic analysis showed that each sampling zone has different fungal communities. In particular, out of 209 genera total, 6 genera in the fairy ring zone, such as Hemimycena, were uniquely present and 31 genera, such as Mycena, Boletopsis, and Repetophragma, were specifically absent. The results of metagenomic analysis based on the pyrosequencing indicate a decrease of fungal communities in the fairy ring zone and changes of fungal communities depending on the fairy ring growth of T. matsutake.

<B>Purpose:</B> PTMC is defined as a papillary thyroid cancer smaller than 10 mm in its greatest diameter. It is the most common form of differentiated thyroid cancer and its prognosis is known to be very favorable. The aim of this study is to identify its biologic behavior and to formulate a reasonable therapeutic strategy for the treatment of PTMC. <B>Methods:</B> 379 patients with papillary thyroid cancer were analyzed. Each patient was diagnosed preoperatively or postoperatively and treated between Jan. 2000 and Dec. 2007. Among these patients, 143 had been identified as having PTMC (37.7%) with a mean tumor size of 0.72 cm in diameter. <B>Results:</B> There were no significant differences of the clinical characteristics such as gender, age, the operative methods, or multicentricity between the PTMC group and the non-PTMC group, except for LN metastases. Also, there were fewer symptoms of palpable neck mass and preoperative findings such as capsular invasion and microcalcification in the PTMC group. We performed unilateral lobectomy with or without central compartment neck node dissection for the early stage diseases, but for the later stages of disease we performed near-total or total thyroidectomy with routine central compartment neck node dissection. And for the patients with lateral node enlargement, we performed ipsilateral modified radical neck dissection (MRND). <B>Conclusion:</B> This study shows that PTMC is quite similar to conventional papillary thyroid cancer in its biological behavior, and we conclude that total thyroidectomy with central compartment neck node dissection is the proper therapeutic strategy to treat PTMC.
