Resistance to Abrasive Wear of Materials Used as Metallic Matrices in Diamond Impregnated Tools

Metal-bonded diamond impregnated tools are being increasingly used in the processing of stone and ceramics, road repair, petroleum exploration, etc. Although the main tool wear mechanisms have been identified, the scientific background is inadequate and fundamental research has to be carried out to better understand the tool field behaviour. This work addresses the complex issues of modelling abrasive wear of the metallic matrix under laboratory conditions. The generated data indicates that the matrix wear resistance can be assessed in a simple manner; whereas tests carried out on diamond impregnated specimens may aid prediction of the tool life in abrasive applications.

Changes in microstructure and toughness at the heat affected zone after welding thermal cycle simulations have been investigated in steels containing titanium oxide and aluminum inclusion particles. The titanium oxide and aluminum inclusion particles acted as preferential nucleation sites for intragranular ferrite plates within prior austenite grains. The HAZ toughness of the steels containing titanium oxide particles was over 100 joule at -20℃ test temperature, while that of the steels containing aluminum inclusions was over 300 joule at the same condition. Consequently, the proper titanium oxide and aluminum inclusion particles accelerated the formation of fine ferrite grains inside prior austenite grains, resulting in a remarkable improvement of heat affected zone toughness.

Dry sliding wear behavior of electro-pressure sintered Co-Fe and Co-Ni compacts was investigated. Pin-on-disk wear tests were performed on the sintered Co-Fe, Co-Ni disks against alumina $(Al_2O_3)$ and silica $(SiO_2)$ balls at various loads ranging from 3N to 12N. A constant sliding speed of 0.1m/sec was employed. Wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss of a specimen by the measured specific gravity and sliding dis-tance. Worn surfaces and cross-sections of the specimens were examined using an SEM and EDS to investigate wear mechanism of the compacts. The wear behavior of the compacts were discussed as a function of their com-position. Effects of mechancial properties of the compact as well as oxide layers formed on wearing surface on the wear were also discussed.

Worn surfaces and cross sections of them were examined by a scanning electron microscopy, and wear mechanism of the compacts was investigated. Wear characteristics of the compacts were discussed as a function of composition of the compacts. Relationship between the wear rate and mechancial properties of the compact was explored, and effects of the oxide layer that was formed on wearing surface of the compacts on the wear were also studied.
