Background: Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in women. Central pressure may better represent the load imposed on the coronary and cerebral arteries and thereby bear a stronger relationship to cardiovascular outcomes. We hypothesized that there might be difference in central pressure between men and women. Methods: Patients (n=187, male n=91 mean age 52.5 ± 13.4 years, female n=96, mean age 54.5 ± 9.9 years) who con firmed hypertension by 24hr ABPM (=135/85mmHg) were enrolled. All patients underwent radial applanation tonometry (HEM-9000AI) and calculated central BP. We investigated the differences of 24-hour ABPM parameters and central BP parameters between men and women. Results: There were no signify cant differences in age, other cardiovascular risk factors. The men showed signi. cant high BMI (25.8[24.3-27.7] vs 24.6[22.7-26.7], p=0.008) compared to the women. The men showed higher the 24-hour average systolic (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) day-time average SBP, DBP compared to the women (149[142- 156] vs 140[135-150], 97[91-103] vs 92[87-98], p Conclusions: Although men showed higher ambulatory SBP, DBP than women, women showed higher central SBP, central PP, AIx 75, and PP ampli. cation than men. This gender differences in central pressure are the most likely explanation of higher cardiovascular mortality in women.

<P>Many patients are currently suffering from nickel (Ni)-induced allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). There have been few Korean studies dealing with the threshold of Ni-induced ACD and quantifying the total amount of Ni in the metal alloys. The aim of this study is to evaluate the amount of Ni leached from metal alloys and Ni contents in metal alloys, and to estimate the threshold of Ni-induced ACD. All the earrings we examined leached below 0.5 µg/cm<SUP>2</SUP>/week, the upper limit of European Union (EU) regulation, but the other metal alloys leached a much higher amount of Ni than the limit. Likewise, all the earrings we examined contained less than 0.05% Ni (500 µg/g), the upper limit of EU regulation, but the other metal alloys exceeded this limit. Twenty Ni-sensitive subjects, who were patch-tested with various concentrations of Ni sulphate, showed positive reactions to 5% and 1% Ni sulphate, 10 subjects showed positive reactions to 0.01%, and the most sensitive subject showed reaction even to 0.0001%. The subjects in this study were more sensitive to Ni than those in the previous studies done in Europe. Taken together, strictly regulating the Ni-containing alloys that are made in Korea is needed to lower the occurrence of Ni-induced ACD.</P>

<P>Paeonol (2′-hydroxy-4′-methoxyacetophenone) is known to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activities. Recently there is evidence that anti-inflammatory agents may be useful in the setting of angiogenesis-related diseases. Thus in the present study the anti-angiogenic activity of paeonol and its mechanism were investigated <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. Paeonol significantly inhibited proliferation of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)-stimulated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Paeonol also significantly inhibited migration and tube formation of bFGF-stimulated HUVECs <I>in vitro</I>. In addition, paeonol significantly suppressed neovessel formation on bFGF-treated chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) and disrupted bFGF-induced neovascularization in Matrigel plug assay <I>in vivo</I>. Furthermore, paeonol downregluated Akt phosphorylation in bFGF-stimulated HUVECs and reduced expression of matrix metalloproteinases-2 and -9 in HT1080 human fibrosarcoma cells. The Akt inhibitor LY294002 synergistically potentiated paeonol-induced inactivation of Akt and vascular endothelial growth factor in bFGF-treated HUVECs. Taken together, these findings suggest that paeonol can be a potent suppressor of angiogenesis and metastasis partially through inhibition of Akt signaling pathway and matrix metalloproteinase activity.</P>

<P>The plasma-driven inductive voltages were not negligible and should be taken into account for the reliable operation of the voltage-based quench detection of the KSTAR CS coil. For the active compensation of such plasma-induced voltage noise, plasma parameters should be measured in real-time and applied to the quench detection system. The selection of plasma parameters by considering their contribution to the noise is of primary importance. A code, which can estimate the induced coil voltage driven by plasma, is developed by using a simplified plasma response modeling. The numerical analysis has showed that there is an apparent influence from the plasma, while the influence from eddy currents induced in passive structures is negligible. The change of plasma current is the primary noise source and the radial and vertical motions of plasma have an effect, although they are small. The performance of the quench detector is developed and tested during the 2017 KSTAR campaign. The noise rejection performance is discussed with various experimental results and numerical estimations.</P>

An integrated gold microdisk electrode was constructed and modified with metal-porphyrin or metal-phthalocyanines for NO determination in biological media. Microanalysis of NO using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry in $1\;{\times}\;10^{-2}$ M $HClO_4$ was optimal when the accumulation potential was 0.1 V, frequency 100 Hz, and the scan rate was 200 mV/s. When the electrode was modified with metal-porphyrin or metal-phthalocyanines, the anodic peak currents of NO increased due to the catalytic oxidation of NO. In case of Fe(II)-phthalocyanine modified electrode, the peak currents remarkably increased and the sensitivity was high. The calibration curve had good linearity in the range from $3.6\;{\times}\;10^{-5}$ M to $7.2\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$ M, and the detection limit was $5.7\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$ M. For the structural stability and increased sensitivity, Fe(II)-phthalocyanine modified gold microdisk electrode coated with Nafion was applied to determination of NO released from cultured macrophase.

<P>The 16S rRNA and <I>gyrB</I> genes of 22 <I>Streptomyces</I> strains belonging to the <I>Streptomyces griseus</I> cluster were sequenced, and their taxonomic positions were re-evaluated. For correct analysis, all of the publicly available sequences of the species were collected and compared with those obtained in this study. Species for which no consensus sequence could be identified were excluded from the phylogenetic analysis. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity within the cluster ranged from 98.6 to 100 % with a mean value of 99.6±0.3 %, and those of the <I>gyrB</I> gene ranged from 93.6 to 99.9 % with a mean value of 96.3±1.5 %. The observed average nucleotide substitution rate of the <I>gyrB</I> gene was ten times higher than that of the 16S rRNA gene, showing a far higher degree of variation. Strains sharing 99.3 % or more <I>gyrB</I> sequence similarity (corresponding to an evolutionary distance of 0.0073) always formed monophyletic groups in both trees. Through the combined analysis of the two genes, clear cases of synonymy could be identified and, according to the priority rule, the assertion of the status of <I>Streptomyces setonii</I> as a distinct species and the reclassification of <I>Streptomyces fimicarius</I> as a later synonym of <I>S. setonii</I> and <I>Streptomyces albovinaceus</I> as a later synonym of <I>Streptomyces globisporus</I> are proposed. Emended descriptions of <I>S. setonii</I> and <I>S. globisporus</I> are provided.</P>

<P>Water extract (WE) of <I>Cordyceps militaris</I> has been reported to produce antitumor and immunomodulatory activities <I>in vivo</I> and <I>in vitro</I>. However, the therapeutic mechanism has not been known. In this study, we investigated whether water extract of <I>C. militaris</I> induces the phenotypic and functional maturation of dendritic cells (DC). It profoundly increased CD40, CD54, CD80, CD86, and MHC class II expression in murine bone marrow (BM)-derived myeloid DC. Endocytosis was assessed by the uptake of FITC-dextran and FITC-albumin. The ability of unstimulated DC (UT-DC) to uptake dextran and albumin was higher than that of WE- or LPS-stimulated DC (LPS-DC). Also, UT-DC secreted a low concentration of IL-12, while WE- or LPS-DC secreted higher levels of IL-12 than UT-DC. WE not only formed morphologically mature DC and clusters, but also induced predominantly functional maturation. Moreover, WE is shown to promote the cytotoxicity of specific-cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) induced by DC which were pulsed with P815 tumor-lysate during the stage of antigen presentation. These results suggest that DC maturation by WE can play a critical role in the improvement of the immunoregulatory function in patients with impaired host defense.</P>
A report of 21 unreported bacterial species in Korea, belonging to the Betaproteobacteria

As a subset investigation to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, a total of 21 bacterial strains assigned to the class Betaproteobacteria were isolated from a wide range of environmental samples which collected from fresh water, roots of plants, mineral water and soil from ginseng farm. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that 21 isolated strains were most closely related to the class Betaproteobacteria, with high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>99.1%) and constructed a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest species in the class Betaproteobacteria. These isolated species have no previous report or publication in Korea; therefore 17 species in 14 genera of 6 families in the order Burkholderiales, 1 species in the order Methylophilales, 2 species in 2 genera of 1 family in the order Neisseriales are reported for betaproteobacterial species found in Korea. Purpose: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a benign disease, which is characterized by a cervical lymphadenopathy with fever, and it often mimics malignant lymphoma (ML). 2-[$^{18}F$]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ($^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT) is a powerful imaging modality for the diagnosis, staging and monitoring of ML, with the limitations including the nonspecific FDG uptake in infectious or inflammatory processes. This study compared clinical manifestations and PET/CT findings between KFD and ML patients. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 23 patients with KFD and 33 patients with ML, diagnosed histopathologically, between January 2000 and May 2013 at the Department of Pediatrics, Yeungnam University Medical Center. Among them, we analyzed the clinical manifestations, laboratory findings and characteristics, and the amount of $^{18}F$-FDG uptake between 8 KFD and 9 ML patients who had $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT. Results: The $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT maximum standardized uptake values ($SUV_{max}$) ranged from 8.3 to 22.5 (mean, 12.0) in KFDs, and from 5.8 to 34.3 (mean, 15.9) in MLs. There were no significant differences in $SUV_{max}$ between KFDs and MLs. $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT with ML patients showed hot uptakes in the extranodal organs, such as bone marrow, small bowel, thymus, kidney, orbit and pleura. However, none of the KFD cases showed extranodal uptake (P<0.001). $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT findings of KFD with nodal involvement only were indistinguishable from those of ML. Conclusion: Patients who had extranodal involvement on PET/CT were more likely to have malignancy than KFD.

<P>A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming and short rod- or rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated 22-5(T), was isolated from a bluespotted cornetfish, Fistularia commersonii, and subjected to taxonomic study. Strain 22-5(T) grew optimally at 30 C and in the presence of 2-5?% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 22-5(T) belonged to the genus Paracoccus and joined the cluster comprising Paracoccus homiensis DD-R11(T) and Paracoccus zeaxanthinifaciens ATCC 21588(T), with which strain 22-5(T) exhibited 97.4 and 96.9?% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively. Strain 22-5(T) exhibited 94.0-96.6?% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the other type strains of species of the genus Paracoccus. Strain 22-5(T) contained Q-10 as the predominant menaquinone and C(18?:?1)ω7c as the predominant fatty acid. In this study, P. zeaxanthinifaciens KCTC 22688(T) also contained Q-10 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone. The DNA G+C content of strain 22-5(T) was 63.6 mol%. Strain 22-5(T) exhibited 44 and 32?% DNA-DNA relatedness to P. homiensis KACC 11518(T) and P. zeaxanthinifaciens KCTC 22688(T), respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain 22-5(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paracoccus, for which the name Paracoccus fistulariae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 22-5(T) (=KCTC 22803(T) =CCUG 58401(T)).</P>
