        Several ecological factors were investigated for the virus disease occurring on the horticultural crops (Solanaceae spp). The results obtained were as follows: In the survey of primary biological inoculum, 42 weed species showing viral symptoms were collected on the circumference of pepper, potato and tomato fields. The number of weed species showing viral symptoms were ; 38 species on pepper field, 24 species on potato field and 21 species on tomato field, respectively. The screening of viruses revealed that more weeds are infected by Cucumber Mosaic Virus(CMV) and Potato Virus Y(PVY) than by Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) and Potato Virus X (PVX). In single and double infection with viruses such as TMV, CMV and P VY on the pepper fields, the virus infection phases were different according to the area and according to the screening time. The pepper plants cultivated in Youngyang area were much more infected by virus than in Taegu, Namji and Kimchun area where the improved field hygien was applied. The severity of the disease in Youngyang area was mainly due to the double infection from the early growth stage. Transmission activity of TMV in different cultivation method on tomato was distinguishably higher in outdoor cultivation with furrow irrigation than vinyl house cultivation with furrow irrigation and outdoor cultivation without furrow irrigation. No significant difference the transmission activities was found between of vinyl house cultivation with furrow irrigation and outdoor cultivation without furrow irrigation.

      • Attractive distance of two different sizes of yellow sticky traps for greenhouse whitefly using variogram analysis

        two different sizes of yellow sticky traps (small trap: 9.6×8.0cm; large trap: 9.6×16cm) for sampling greenhouse whitefly (GHWF), Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), adults in four commercial cherry tomato greenhouses. The patch size of GHWF immatures between plants was also estimated using visual counts. Two variogram models were fitted to the empirical variograms developed from the data collected by each sampling method. All the variograms reached the sill indicating the presence of spatial dependence among the spatial data obtained by the two sampling methods. For GHWF adults on sticky traps the range of variogram (a measure of attractive distance) was not different between the two trap sizes. This result indicated that the attractive distances of the two different yellow sticky traps were very similar. The ranges of the variograms for the visual count of immatures on plants were always less than those for adults, indicating that the attractive distance of the traps for GHWF adults extends beyond the patch size for immatures on cherry tomato plants. These data have implications for developing sampling plans for the management of GHWF in tomato greenhouses.

      • Clinical Performance of Whole-Body 18F-FDG PET/Dixon-VIBE, T1-Weighted, and T2-Weighted MRI Protocol in Colorectal Cancer

        PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical performance of whole-body F-FDG PET/Dixon–volume-interpolated breath-hold examination (Dixon-VIBE), T1-weighted, and T2-weighted MRI protocol in patients with colorectal cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 59 patients with colorectal cancer were enrolled in this study. Each patient had one of the following clinical conditions: initial stage before therapy, stage after neoadjuvant therapy, suspicious colorectal liver metastases, and colorectal liver metastases after chemotherapy. Fourteen patients had primary colorectal cancer, whereas 38 patients had a total of 132 hepatic lesions, 53 lesions existed before chemotherapy, and 79 lesions appeared after chemotherapy. The primary stage and metastases images were obtained using our PET/Dixon-VIBE/T1/T2 MRI protocol and were analyzed by 2 nuclear medicine physicians. Diagnostic accuracy was compared with contrast-enhanced MRI images, which were based on surgical pathology results. RESULTS: The sensitivity of our imaging protocol for primary colorectal cancer was 100% (14/14). T and N stage both showed 92.9% (13/14) accuracy. Of all 132 hepatic lesions, 115 metastatic lesions were analyzed, and 17 benign lesions were excluded (6 were during pretreatment cases, and 11 were during posttreatment cases). In pretreatment metastatic lesions (n = 47), the sensitivities of our protocol and dedicated MRI were 95.7% (45/47) and 100% (47/47), respectively. In posttreatment lesions (n = 68), sensitivities of our protocol and dedicated MRI were 75% (51/68) and 91.2% (62/68), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Whole-body PET/Dixon-VIBE/T1/T2 MRI protocol is clinically useful for TNM staging and chemonaive hepatic metastasis in colorectal cancer.

        Background: Although endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) have been increasingly applied to undifferentiated type early gastric cancer (UD-EGC), its usefulness still remains controversial because of the lack of post-ESD long term follow-up data. The aim of this study was to investigate therapeutic outcomes of ESD for UD-EGC. Methods: Between February 2006 and December 2013, a total of 80 patients with UD-EGC were treated with ESD at the Pusan National University Hospital. Their medical records including clinicopathologic feature and therapeutic results were retrospectively reviewed. Results: 80 patients were treated with ESD and 41 patients (51.2%) met the expandedcriteria for ESD. In these 41 lesions meeting expanded criteria group, en bloc resection rate and curative resection rate were 92.6% (38/41) and 87.8% (36/41), respectively. These 36 patients who met the expanded criteria and underwent curative resection, no local recurrence or distant metastasis was detected during a mean follow-up period of 42 months (range 6-98 months). There were 5 patients who met the expanded criteria but non-curative resection was done. Two of them refuse surgical treatment. The other three patients were treated with gastrectomy and did not show local recurrence or distant metastasis. Among a total of 80 patients with UD-EGCs, delayed bleeding occurred 2 patients (2.5%), and there were no ESD-related complications like early bleeding or perforation except delayed bleeding. Conclusions: ESD could be a curative treatment for UD-EGC meeting expanded criteria if curative resection is achieved, and for more curative resection, technical advances are essential. Therefore, we should select appropriate patients with UD-EGC meeting expanded criteria before procedure, and to ensure the effi cacy of ESD for UDEGC, we need more long term follow-up results.

        Metastatic follicular struma ovarii complicating pregnancy

        A 35-year-old woman was determined to have an ovarian cyst and underwent a right ovarian cystectomy at 10 weeks of gestation. A histopathological examination revealed follicular carcinoma arising in a teratoma. No evidence of metastasis was found after delivery. She underwent a total thyroidectomy, followed by radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy. However, her serum thyroglobulin level increased to 1,437 ng/ml (normal range: 0-52 ng/ml) after 10 months. Radioiodine scintigraphy and abdominal computed tomography revealed liver metastasis and peritoneal seeding. She underwent debulking surgery of the liver, right salpinx, and peritoneal seeding nodules. A pathological examination showed metastatic follicular carcinoma with focal poorly differentiated features. Adjuvant RAI therapy was restarted, and her serum thyroglobulin levels returned to normal. In conclusion, metastatic lesions were successfully treated with a combination of debulking surgery and RAI therapy. Close medical follow-up monitoring serum thyroglobulin levels is mandatory in such patients.

      • 농업용 저수지의 수리·수문학적 붕괴 검토

        최근들어 기상이변에 따른 국지성 집중호우로 인해 거의 매년마다 농업용 저수지 제체의 붕괴가 발생하고 있다. 농업용 저수지 제체의 붕괴사유 중 첫 번째는 수리·수문학적 측면에서 저수지 홍수유입량의 급작스런 증가로 인하여 저수지 수위가 상승하여 제체를 넘어서는 월류에 의해 발생한다. 두 번째는 지반공학적 측면에서 저수지 제체의 노화 등의 이유로 인해 파이핑에 의해 발생한다. 이 두 가지 농업용 저수지 붕괴사유중 수리·수문학적 측면인 월류에 의한 농업용 저수지 붕괴여부를 검토하는 방법을 고안하였다. 본 검토는 2009년 7월 12일 집중호우에 의해 붕괴된 농업용 저수지 댐인 석화(내사)저수지(경기도 여주군위치)의 홍수배제능력 부족에 따른 월류에 의한 제체 붕괴 여부를 검토하였다. 본 검토에서는 2009년 7월 11일 22시부터 2009년 7월 12일 15시 20분까지 이천관측소의 강우를 분석한 후, 석화(내사)저수지 유입홍수량과 여수토의 방류홍수량을 산정하여 월류에 의한 제체 붕괴 여부를 검토하였다. 또한 본 검토방법에 대한 검증을 위하여 HEC-HMS를 이용하여 해당 지점의 첨두홍수량 및 수문곡선을 산정하여 비교분석하였다.

      • Analysis of spatial dependence and association of oak wilt damage by Ambrosia beetle, Platypus koryoensis

        In this study, we examined the spatial dependence and association of Ambrosia beetle, Platypus koryoensis, which is the vector of oak wilt disease caused by Rafaelea sp. using two geostatistical methods. Two adjacent sampling plots were selected and named as "Sector A" and "Sector B". Sector A area was 63 ha and Sector B area was 420 ha, respectively. We arbitrarily separated each sampling plot by 50m×50m grids. Sector A and B were separated by 19×15 and 43×41 grids, respectively. The oak wilt disease damage level of tree was classified by amount of frass of Ambrosia beetle near target oak tree as follows: Lost tree (LT), Severe damage (SD), Intermediate damage (ID), and Light damage (LD). Number of each damage level of oak tree was counted and recorded in each sampling grid. Spatial dependence and association of oak wilt damage was analyzed and compared using mathematical variogram models and spatial analysis by distance indices (SADIE). Variogram model ranges were 179~368m in Sector A and 634~1073m in Sector B, respectively. The damage levels of all trees in each sector were indicated as aggregated distribution by aggregation indices of SADIE (Ia > 1). Each damage level pair had strong association in the consecutive orders than in any random order based on the results of SADIE association test. The spatial dependence and association of oak wilt damage levels presented here provide the baseline information necessary to understand and manage oak wilt disease in Korea.

      • Sublethal effects of fenpyroximate and pyridaben on two predatory mite species, Neoseiulus womersleyi and Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acari, Phytoseiidae).

        <P>Laboratory bioassays were conducted to evaluate the sublethal effects of fenpyroximate and pyridaben on life-table parameters of two predatory mites species, Neoseiulus (= Amblyseius) womersleyi and Phytoseiulus persimilis. In these assays, young adult females were treated with three sublethal concentrations of each acaricide. The life-table parameters were calculated at each acaricide concentration, and compared using bootstrap procedures. For each acaricide, the LC(50) estimates for both species were similar, yet the two species exhibited completely different susceptibility when the population growth rate was used as the endpoint. Exposure to both acaricides reduced the net reproduction rate (R (o)) in a concentration-dependent manner and their EC(50)s were equivalent to less than LC(7). Two different scales of population-level endpoints were estimated to compare the total effect between the species and treatments: the first endpoint values were based on the net reproductive rate (fecundity λ) and the second endpoint values incorporated the mean egg hatchability into the net reproductive rate (vitality λ). The fecundity λ decreased in a concentration-dependent manner for both acaricide treatments, but the vitality λ decreased abruptly after treatment of N. womersleyi with pyridaben. The change in the patterns of λ revealed that the acaricide effects at the population level strongly depended on the life-history characteristics of the predatory mite species and the chemical mode of action. When the total effects of the two acaricides on N. womersleyi and P. persimilis were considered, fenpyroximate was found to be the most compatible acaricide for the augmentative release of N. womersleyi after treatment.</P>
