Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) of four binary systems--methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE)+methanol. MTBE+heptane, MTBE+octane and MTBE+i-octane--were measured at atmospheric pressure by using Othmer-type circulation method. The VLE of ternary system. MTBE+methanol+heptane, were also measured at atmospheric pressure. These VLE data were predicted by ASOG and correlated by Wilson equation, and the prediction and correlation performances were discussed.

The characteristics of neutral beam driven current have been investigated in helical devices, which do not need ohmic current to produce a magnetic field configuration. The neutral beam current drive experiments have been performed in a wide range of Zb/Zeff in LHD and CHS. The Z dependence of neutral beam driven current in the region of Zb/Zeff < 1 obtained by neon discharges in LHD agrees with the Ohkawa model. On the other hand, the current driven by neon beam injection in CHS cannot be explained by the Ohkawa model.

Quantitative data of 50 non-polar organic compounds constituting PM2.5 were continuously collected and analyzed from June 2016 to October 2017 (approximately 17 months) at Ichihara, one of the largest industrial areas in Japan. Target nonpolar organic compounds including 21 species of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 24 species of n-alkanes and 5 species of phthalate esters (PAEs) were simultaneously measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Basically, the average concentrations of the total PAHs, n-alkanes and PAEs in each season remained nearly level, and seasonal variations were little throughout the study period. These results suggest that the emission sources, which are not influenced by the seasons, are the dominant inputs for the target organic compounds. Diagnostic ratios of PAHs, assessment of n-alkane homologue distributions, carbon preference index, and the contribution of wax n-alkanes from plants were used to estimate source apportionments. These results indicate that anthropogenic sources were the main contributor for most PAHs and n-alkanes throughout the study period. The concentrations of PAEs selected in this study were low because emission amounts of these chemicals were little within the source areas of the sampling site. To our knowledge, this study is the first attempt to simultaneously measure a high number of non-polar organic compounds in PM2.5 collected from the ambient air of Japan, and the resultant data will provide valuable data and information for environmental researchers.

Study Design: Retrospective case series. Purpose: To investigate the oncological outcomes, including distant relapse, after en bloc spondylectomy (EBS) for spinal metastases in patients with a minimum of 2-year follow-up. Overview of Literature: Although EBS has been reported to be locally curative and extend survival in select patients with spinal metastases, detailed reports regarding the control of distant relapse after EBS are lacking. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 18 consecutive patients (median age at EBS, 62 years; range, 40–77 years) who underwent EBS for spinal metastases between 1991 and 2015. The primary cancer sites included the kidney (n=7), thyroid (n=4), liver (n=3), and other locations (n=4). Survival rates were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method, and groups were compared using the log-rank method. Results: The median operative time and intraoperative blood loss were 767.5 minutes and 2,375 g, respectively. Twelve patients (66.7%) experienced perioperative complications. Five patients (27.8%) experienced local recurrence of the tumor at a median of 12.5 months after EBS, four of which had a positive resection margin status. Thirteen patients (72.2%) experienced distant relapse at a median of 21 months after EBS. The estimated median survival period after distant relapse was 20 months (95% confidence interval, 0.71–39.29 months). No association was found between resection margin status and distant relapse. Overall, the 2-year, 5-year, and 10-year survival rates after EBS were 72.2%, 48.8%, and 27.1%, respectively. Importantly, the era in which EBS was performed did not impact the oncological outcomes. Conclusions: Our results suggest that EBS by itself, even if margin-free, cannot prevent further dissemination, which occurred in >70% of patients at a median of 21 months after EBS. These results should be considered and conveyed to patients for clinical decision-making.

Cognitive activities in recognition directional judgment, such as short-term memory, were examined on a virtual tilted screen by using stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) images. The virtual tilted screen was composed of 3D images; 2D images without perspective views were converted into tilted 3D images by using a simple gradient depth map. In the experiments, a cognitive bias in directional judgment was induced as participants were allowed to perceive the tilted direction through binocular disparity with positive parallax. In Experiment 1, a subjective evaluation in which tilted simple stimuli were presented on a 3D screen was performed, and participants were able to make a right or left turn on a driving simulator. The participants made a directional judgment at the intersection after viewing tilted 3D images. Experiment 2 was carried out to evaluate the rate of correct answers and searching times in four conditions: with 2D, 3D, or tilted 3D images, and tilted 3D distractors. In the tilted 3D condition, tilted 3D images were presented in the same direction as instructed via headphones (“Left” or “Right”). Images were presented in the opposite direction from that indicated via headphones in the tilted 3D distractor condition. The results suggested that the tilted 3D condition was able to easily support participants’ directional judgment as well as remain in short-term memory.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a rare congenital cardiovascular anomaly in cats. Due to their small body, intercostal thoracotomy is the most common option to close the PDA. However, few reports detail the surgical technique for ligating PDA in kittens. In this case report, three cats weighing 1.4 kg, 1.2 kg, and 2.9 kg were diagnosed PDA. Clip ligation via left fourth intercostal thoracotomy was performed and the cats were successfully treated. Postoperative echocardiography showed no residual flow in any of the cases. This case report highlights clip occlusion for small cats with PDA could be safe and effective.
