The in vitro development of human mast cells from fetal liver cells with recombinant human stem cell factor in serum-containing RPMI was compared to that in AIM-V media with and without serum. Compared to serum-containing media, AIM-V media caused mast cells to develop earlier and in greater numbers. By 2 weeks, about 60% of cells in serum-free AIM-V medium were phenotypic mast cells, ~2 times the percentages in serum-containing media. By 6 weeks the percentages of mast cells were ≥80% under all conditions, but the number of mast cells was 3-4-fold greater in serum-free AIM-V medium than in serum-supplemented media. Mast cells obtained in serum-free AIM-V medium exhibited rounded nuclei, like tissue-derived mast cells; mast cells obtained in serum-supplemented media had segmented nuclei. By 10-12 weeks of culture about 40% of the AIM-V-derived cells showed strong chymase immunocytochemical staining, a pattern observed for only 14% of the cells in serum-containing media. AIM-V medium is a suitable medium for the development of human mast cells in vitro, and permits an earlier, more selective and greater expansion of mast cells than serum-containing media.

An improvement of the radial-velocity measurement accuracy is crucial for the detection of tiny stellar oscillationsand exoplanets. Through the analysis of week-long extensive observations of solar-type stars (Procyon in 2000, 2002, and 2006/2007 and τ Cet in 2002 and 2006/2007), we have carefully examined, revised, and finelytuned the widely used multiple Gaussian IP fitting method for the spectrograph, HIDES. By determining a necessaryand sufficient number of free parameters in the model as well as introducing an iterative process in the radial-velocityanalysis, we can reach a precision of below 3ms<SUP>-1</SUP>, which is much smaller than the precision of 6ms<SUP>-1</SUP> officially announced so far for HIDES. We also make our technique refined for the 2002 McDonald Procyon data. Even with our revised method, slow radial velocity variations with an amplitude of about 10ms<SUP>-1</SUP> are left in the Procyon data. We emphasize that it is neither due to particular observing instruments nor radial-velocity analysis, and thus could be due to stellar origin. The analysis presented here makes the foundations of our next scientific analysis of the radial-velocity variations of Procyon, which will be presented in our forthcoming papers.
In-vivo Imaging of Developing Wings in Butterfly Pupa by Using Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive tomographic imaging technique and has been extensively used in biomedical and histological studies. Using OCT, we have succeeded, for the first time, in visualizing a developing wing in a butter y pupa. Comparing the cross sections of the pupa in each stage of development with those obtained by using conventional invasive methods, we have obtained overall agreement between these different methodologies. Although the spatial resolution is by far inferior, it should be emphasized that OCT essentially offers real-time information.

Depletion of fossil fuel has become a serious problem by accelerating motorization in Asian countries. Furthermore, regulations on exhaust gas such as Particulate Matter (PM) and Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from internal combustion engine are being strengthened year by year. Then, recent diesel engines are equipped with Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) as after treatment device for exhaust gas, and PM is collected. However, with the long-term use of DPF, PM accumulates in DPF. As a result, PM collection efficiency deteriorates and pressure loss increases. Therefore, post injection has attracted attention as DPF regeneration method for burning and removing PM in DPF. In post injection, fuel is injected into the cylinder at the middle to late stage of expansion stroke, and unburned hydrocarbon is supplied to the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC). Then, oxidation heat is generated by oxidation reaction of unburned hydrocarbon and DOC. And the oxidation heat flows into the DPF, thereby burning and removing PM. However, oil dilution to the lubricating oil film on cylinder liner caused by post injection is a serious problem. Because oil dilution is leading to deterioration of sliding properties of piston and thermal efficiency, it is necessary to clarify spray impingement behavior on lubricating oil film. So in this research, we focus on the oil dilution phenomenon caused by post injection and aim for modeling oil dilution phenomenon. In this report, we measured the critical weber number which makes it possible to judge whether or not fuel droplets impinging on lubricating oil film deposits or splash. As a result, it was found that fuel droplets impingement behavior on lubricating oil film is classified into three behaviors by two critical weber numbers. First, We<sub>crP</sub> =(272+11600δ<sub>non</sub><sup>1.29</sup>)Lα<sup>0.01</sup>,second, We<sub>crS</sub> =(235+2255δ<sub>non</sub><sup>1.05</sup>)Lα<sup>0.05</sup>, La=ρ<sub>ο</sub>·σ<sub>ο</sub>·d<sub>in</sub>/μ<sub>ο</sub><sup>2</sup>, Here, ρ<sub>ο</sub> is density of engine oil, σ<sub>ο</sub> is surface tension of engine oil, μ<sub>ο</sub> is viscosity coefficient of engine oil, and Lα is Laplace number.
