We calculate the spectrum of gravitational waves originated from strongly first order electroweak phase transition in the extended Higgs model with a real singlet scalar field. In order to calculate the bubble nucleation rate, we perform a two-field analysis and evaluate bounce solutions connecting the true and the false vacua using the one-loop effective potential at finite temperatures. Imposing the Sakharov condition of the departure from thermal equilibrium for baryogenesis, we survey allowed regions of parameters of the model. We then investigate the gravitational waves produced at electroweak bubble collisions in the early Universe, such as the sound wave, the bubble wall collision and the plasma turbulence. We find that the strength at the peak frequency can be large enough to be detected at future space-based gravitational interferometers such as eLISA, DECIGO and BBO. Predicted deviations in the various Higgs boson couplings are also evaluated at the zero temperature, and are shown to be large enough too. Therefore, in this model strongly first order electroweak phase transition can be tested by the combination of the precision study of various Higgs boson couplings at the LHC, the measurement of the triple Higgs boson coupling at future lepton colliders and the shape of the spectrum of gravitational wave detectable at future gravitational interferometers.

Background

Although experimental studies have shown that gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) has a role in tumor progression, epidemiologic evidence for a relationship between GGT and cancer incidence is limited. GGT was measured using the Szasz method. The participants were then followed from 1 January 1996 until 31 December 2005, and cancer incidence was recorded by using the Miyagi Regional Cancer Registry. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed for each quartile of GGT and compared. The lowest quartile (GGT <13.0 IU/ml) was used as the reference category.

Results

We documented 1505 cancers. Among participants in the highest quartile (GGT ≥31.0 IU/ml), the multivariate HR for any cancer was 1.28 (95% CI, 1.08–1.53; P for trend, <0.001), the HR for colorectal cancer was significantly greater than unity, and the HRs for esophageal, pancreatic, and breast cancers were greater than unity but not significantly so. This positive trend was observed only in current drinkers.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that there is a positive relationship between GGT and cancer incidence only for alcohol-related cancers in current drinkers and that the positive association of GGT with cancer incidence largely reflects alcohol consumption.

Aging is a natural process where changes occur in multiple tissues, resulting in aesthetic and functional effects. Aging eyelids lead to a tired or sleepy appearance. Progressive changes continue throughout life; these may eventually affect the ocular surface and cause visual impairment. Objective is to report the pathophysiology of the common age-related eyelid disorders and the current management concepts. This article presents the pathophysiology and the surgical procedures of eyelid disorders, such as blepharoptosis, dermatochalasis, entropion, ectropion, baggy eyelids, epicanthus, and lateral canthal aging. In general, most agerelated eyelid changes are corrected due to its to its associated cosmetic and functional problems. Management is based on anatomic factors contributing to the eyelid disorder. Conclusion is the choice of surgical procedure is based on the exact localisation of the eyelid pathology.
Late complications of nylon suture blepharoplasty causing ocular surface injury
Kazunami Noma,Yasuhiro Takahashi,Maria Suzanne Sabundayo,Hirohiko Kakizaki 대한미용의학회 2018 대한미용의학회지 Vol.2 No.1
Background: There are several known ocular complications of suture blepharoplasty which includes suture exposure, cyst formation, and surgical site infection. Objective: To present late complications of nylon suture blepharoplasty that causes damage to the ocular surface. Methods: Medical records of patients who developed ocular surface injury at least 1 year after nylon suture blepharoplasty were reviewed. Results: A total of 9 eyes (3 right and 6 left) of 9 patients (all females) were included in this study. All patients underwent trans-tarsal nylon suture blepharoplasty. The average age of the patients was 36.2 years (range: 22-64 years). The average interval between suture blepharoplasty and revision surgery was 9.6 years (range: 5-15 years). The mean follow-up period after revision surgery was 17 months (range: 7-48 months). Before revision surgery, all patients had reported ocular discomfort. Slit lamp examination revealed ocular surface injury caused by the presence of granulation tissue in the palpebral conjunctiva and deformity of the tarsal plate. Intraoperatively, suture exposure was absent in all but one eyelid. All of the symptoms completely disappeared postoperatively. Conclusion: Late complications of nylon suture blepharoplasty such as granulation tissue formation and tarsal plate deformity cause damage to the ocular surface. The trans-tarsal technique and hydrolytic denaturation of nylon sutures were considered as the main contributory factors leading to the mechanisms of ocular surface injury.
The development of active water oxidation catalysts is critical to achieve high efficiency in overall water splitting. Recently, sub 10 nm-sized monodispersed partially oxidized manganese oxide nanoparticles were shown to exhibit not only superior catalytic performance for oxygen evolution, but also unique electrokinetics, as compared to their bulk counterparts. In the present work, the water oxidizing mechanism of partially oxidized MnO nanoparticles was investigated using integrated in situ spectroscopic and electrokinetic analyses. We successfully demonstrated that, in contrast to previously reported manganese (Mn)-based catalysts, Mn(III) species are stably generated on the, surface of MnO nanoparticles via a proton-coupled electron transfer pathway. Furthermore, we confirmed as to MnO nanoparticles that the one-electron oxidation step from Mn(II) to Mn(III) is no longer the rate-determining step for water oxidation and that Mn(W)=O species are generated as reaction intermediates during catalysis.
