<P>A novel bacterium, designated strain 5YN1-3(T), was isolated from wetland peat collected from Yongneup, Korea. The bacterium was facultatively anaerobic, Gram-negative, yellow-coloured, rod-shaped, mesophilic and motile with one polar flagellum. The strain grew optimally at 30 degrees C, at pH 6.0-9.0 and with 0-1 % NaCl (w/v). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed the highest similarity to the sequence from Aquitalea magnusonii TRO-001DR8(T), with 98.7 % sequence similarity. However, strain 5YN1-3(T) showed DNA-DNA relatedness of 43 % (40 % in a reciprocal experiment) with A. magnusonii LMG 23054(T). The strain contained summed feature 3 (iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH and/or C(16 : 1)omega7c) and C(16 : 0) as major cellular fatty acids. On the basis of DNA-DNA relatedness and physiological and biochemical characterization, strain 5YN1-3(T) should be assigned to a novel species of the genus Aquitalea, for which the name Aquitalea denitrificans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 5YN1-3(T) (=KACC 12729(T) =DSM 21300(T)).</P>
Paludibacterium yongneupense gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from a wetland, Yongneup, in Korea.

<P>A cream-coloured bacterial strain, 5YN8-15(T), was isolated from a wetland, Yongneup, in the Inje region of the Republic of Korea. The bacterium was facultatively anaerobic, Gram-negative, motile with a single polar flagellum and curved-rod-shaped. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain 5YN8-15(T) is a member of the Betaproteobacteria. Closely related taxa were Gulbenkiania mobilis E4FC31(T) (94.9% sequence similarity), Chromobacterium species (94.1-94.4%), Aquitalea magnusonii TRO-001DR8(T) (93.2%) and Aquaspirillum serpens IAM 13944(T) (92.5%). All other species with validly published names analysed showed sequence similarities of below 92%. Strain 5YN8-15(T) had ubiquinone 8 as the major isoprenoid quinone. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C(16:1)omega7c and/or iso-C(15:0) 2-OH), C(16:0) and C(18:1)omega7c. The DNA G+C content was 63.0 mol%. Based on the data from the polyphasic study, strain 5YN8-15(T) represents a novel genus and species of the family Neisseriaceae, for which the name Paludibacterium yongneupense gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 5YN8-15(T) (=KACC 11601(T)=DSM 18731(T)).</P>
Thalassobacter arenae sp. nov., isolated from sea sand in Korea.

<P>A Gram-negative, short rod-shaped bacterium, strain GA2-M15(T), was isolated from a sea-sand sample at Homi Cape, Pohang city, Republic of Korea. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis demonstrated that this isolate was unique, showing 95.9 % sequence similarity to the type strain of Thalassobacter stenotrophicus and similarities of 94.0-95.2 % to the type strains of species of the genera Octadecabacter (94.4-95.2 %), Jannaschia (94.0-94.4 %) and Thalassobius (94.0-94.7 %). Chemotaxonomic characteristics (diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine as the major polar lipids and C(18 : 1)omega7c as the predominant fatty acid) and DNA G+C content (56 mol%) were also similar to those of Thalassobacter stenotrophicus. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, physiological properties and some fatty acid components showed that strain GA2-M15(T) could be differentiated from Thalassobacter stenotrophicus. On the basis of these results, strain GA2-M15(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Thalassobacter, for which the name Thalassobacter arenae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GA2-M15(T) (=KACC 12675(T) =DSM 19593(T)).</P>

Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is considered as an antitumor agent owing to its ability to induce apoptosis of cancer cells without imparting toxicity toward most normal cells. TRAIL is produced in poor yield because of its insoluble expression in the cytoplasm of E. coli. In this study, we achieved soluble expression of TRAIL by fusing maltose-binding protein (MBP), b’a’ domain of protein disulfide isomerase (PDIb’a’), or protein disulfide isomerase at the N-terminus of TRAIL. The TRAIL was purified using subsequent immobilized metal affinity chromatography and amylose-binding chromatography, with the tag removal using tobacco etch virus protease. Approximately 4.5 mg of pure TRAIL was produced from 125 ml flask culture with a purification yield of 71.6%. The endotoxin level of the final product was 0.4 EU/μg, as measured by the Limulus amebocyte lysate endotoxin assay. The purified TRAIL was validated and shown to cause apoptosis of HeLa cells with an EC<sub>50</sub> and Hill coefficient of 0.6 ± 0.03 nM and 2.41 ± 0.15, respectively. The high level of apoptosis in HeLa cells following administration of purified TRAIL indicates the significance and novelty of this method for producing high-grade and high-yield TRAIL.

<P>This paper presents a dynamic, electricthermal model for a photovoltaic (PV) cell that combines electrical and thermal parameters to accurately emulate PV panels in real time for power-hardware-in-the-loop simulation (PHILS). In this model, the irradiance and ambient temperature are used to calculate the PV cell temperature based on a five-layer thermal model. The cell temperature is then used in the electrical model to accurately adjust the PV electrical characteristics. A custom experimental setup is built to test and verify the electrical and thermal characteristics of the PV cell model. This electric-thermal model is validated using experimental data in realistic scenarios. The model is also tested with PHILS using a real-time simulator and a programmable dc power supply to emulate PV power generation under various load changes. The model is well matched to the experimental measurements with an error within 2.4% for the electrical aspects and within 1.5% for the thermal aspects in the tested scenarios.</P>

<P>Anthracyclines, such as doxorubicin, are effective anticancer drugs composed of a tetracyclic polyketide aglycone and one or more deoxysugar moieties, which play a critical role in their biological activity. A facile one-pot combinatorial biosynthetic system was developed for the generation of a range of glycosylated derivatives of anthracyclines. Cocultivation of Streptomyces venezuelae mutants producing two anthracycline aglycones with eight different nucleotide deoxysugar-producing S. venezuelae mutants that coexpress a substrate-flexible glycosyltransferase led to the generation of 16 aklavinone or e-rhodomycinone glycosides containing diverse deoxysugar moieties, seven of which are new. This demonstrates the potential of the one-pot combinatorial biosynthetic system based on cocultivation as a facile biological tool capable of combining diverse aglycones and deoxysugars to generate structurally diverse polyketides carrying engineered sugars for drug discovery and development.</P>

The effects of NMDA-receptor antagonist(MK-801) were assessed for the oxygen free radical mediated brain(hippocampus) injury with eights rats which were exposed to carbon monoxide(CO) followed by hyperbaric oxygen(HBO) treatment. Superoxide dismutase(SOD) and malondialdehyde(MDA) were used as parameters of the oxygen free radical reaction. Experimental groups consisted of (1) control group(=breathing with air), (2) Co group(=exposed to CO after air breath), (3) CO-air group(exposed to CO after air breath followed by air breath), and (4) CO-HBO group(=exposed to CO after air breath followed by 3 ATA HBO). Each group was divided two subgroup according to the pretreatment(normal saline of MK-801). CO, CO-air and HBO groups increased in SOD activity as compared with control group. And CO-air and HBO groups increased in MDA as compared with control and CO group. Pretreatment of MK-801 decreased SOD activities significantly(p-value<.05), but MDA amount not significantly(p-value=.107). These results suggest a useful protective effect of NMDA-receptor antagonist(MK-801) in CO induced hippocampal injury mediated by oxygen free radicals.
