Acoustic surveys using a scientific echosounder and trawl surveys were concurrently carried out in between Geoje and Tongyeong of the South Sea by season. The anchovy schools were identified by trawling in each station and used for frequency response analysis. Frequency responses of anchovy schools by season and species composition ratio were examined using multi-frequencies (18, 38, 70, 120 and 200 kHz). The frequency response r(f), is one of the acoustic characteristics which means the volume back-scattering strength ratio between a reference frequency and other frequencies. In spring, the r(f) of anchovy schools decreased with increased frequency, with the exception of 120kHz. While, in winter, the r(f) continuously decreased inversely proportional to the increase in frequency. Frequency response of anchovy schools presented a distinctive difference between spring and winter, however it did not different in spife of different species composition ratios in schools.

Purpose: A prospective phase II trial was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and toxicity of regional hyperthermia and whole liver irradiation (WLI) for numerous chemorefractory liver metastases from colorectal cancer. Materials and Methods: Enrolled patients had numerous chemorefractory hepatic metastases from colorectal cancer. Five sessions of hyperthermia and seven fractions of 3-gray WLI were planned. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was determined using the Korean version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of life questionnaire C-30 and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Hepatobiliary version 4.0. Objective and pain response was evaluated. Results: A total of 12 patients consented to the study and the 10 who received WLI and hyperthermia were analyzed. WLI was completed as planned in nine patients and hyperthermia in eight. Pain response was partial in four patients and stable in four. Partial objective response was achieved in three patients (30.0%) and stable disease was seen in four patients at the 1-month follow-up. One patient died 1 month after treatment because of respiratory failure related to pleural metastasis progression. Other grade III or higher toxicities were detected in three patients; however, all severe toxicities were related to disease progression rather than treatment. No significant difference in HRQoL was noted at the time of assessment for patients who were available for questionnaires. Conclusion: Combined WLI and hyperthermia were well tolerated without severe treatment-related toxicity with a promising response from numerous chemorefractory hepatic metastases from colorectal cancer.
Improvement of friction characteristics of cast aluminum-silicon alloy by laser shock peening

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Piston friction is the primary cause of power loss in automotive engines and thus reducing the friction on piston surface is crucial for the improvement of engine performance. In this work, the effects of laser shock peening on friction characteristics of JIS-AC8A aluminum-silicon alloy, a piston material for automotive engines, were investigated experimentally. Laser shock peening was carried out using a Nd:YAG laser (wavelength = 532 nm, pulse width = 8 ns) at the conditions of laser intensity 4 GW/cm<SUP>2</SUP>, overlapping ratio 50% and spot diameter 2.06 mm with no protective coating. When laser shock peening was applied, surface hardness increased by 22% and significant enhancement of compressive residual stress was achieved. Friction coefficients of the laser peened surface decreased by 19%, 41% and 45% from those of unpeened surface at the 50, 100 and 150 N normal load conditions, respectively, demonstrating the effectiveness of laser shock peening in reducing surface friction. Also, the mass loss by wear decreased by 94%.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Processing conditions for laser peening of AC8A Al-Si alloy were determined. </LI> <LI> Hardness of the Al-Si alloy increased by 22% by laser peening. </LI> <LI> Friction coefficient was reduced by 19∼45% by laser peening under 50∼150 N load. </LI> <LI> Effects of surface properties and wear particles on friction decrease are discussed. </LI> </UL> </P>
Exposure assessment of engineered nanomaterials in the workplace

Nanotechnology is a rapidly growing field and numerous products containing engineered nanomaterials are already in the market. With the increasing use of engineered nanomaterials, it is expected to increase the exposures to nanomaterials in the workplace. However, the researches on the exposure assessment of nanomaterials to humans and the environment are just a beginning step, as the nanotechnology industries are expanding. Questionnaire surveys conducted by various organizations reveal that many nanotechnology companies are searching for information on exposure measurement for the protection of workers who handle nanomaterials. We analyze the trends of researches on the occupational exposure measurement of engineered nanomaterials and investigate the methodologies of exposure assessment recommended by the related working groups. This work is expected to fill the gaps in knowledge on the exposure assessment of nanomaterials.

Three studies on the utility of jointly using explicit and implicit measures of risk were conducted. Study 1 demonstrated a cross-national validity of construct divergence between explicit and implicit measures of risk attitudes among young adults in South Korea and China. The two groups differ in implicitly assessed risk attitudes. Study 2 replicated the explicit–implicit divergence in risk attitudes in older South Korean adults, further evidencing age differences in the implicit measurement of risk attitudes. Study 3 demonstrated the predictive power of financial engineering students on the rates of return of stocks when a newly developed implicit measurement of stock investment interacted complementarily with explicitly assessed personality traits in the context of risk control.

<P>A brain coral-like supercapacitor electrode containing 3D carbon and metal bicontinuous structures was synthesized by a simple method using agarose gel. This bulk electrode can supply excellent power with ultrahigh-rate capability (∼1000 V s<SUP>−1</SUP>).</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>A simple “intrusion, reduction and carbonization” method using agarose gel is developed to achieve 3D carbon and metal bicontinuous structures. Performance enhancement of Li-ion battery by laser structuring of thick electrode with low porosity

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Increasing energy and power densities is one of the important required improvements in lithium ion batteries. However, there exist limitations in increasing both energy and power densities simultaneously because of the increase in internal resistance. In this work, we report the simultaneous improvement of these properties of lithium ion battery by adopting a laser structured LiNi<SUB>0.5</SUB>Mn<SUB>0.3</SUB>Co<SUB>0.2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> cathode. The electrode was processed to make uniformly spaced micro-grooves by using a femtosecond laser. The performance of laser structured electrodes with varying thickness (100∼210μm) and porosity (26% and 50%) were compared with that of unstructured conventional electrodes used in industry. It is demonstrated that the specific energy of thick and dense laser structured electrode (thickness=175μm, porosity=26%) at 0.5C is about twice higher than that of thin and sparse unstructured electrode (thickness=100μm, porosity=50%) while rate capability is almost the same. Also, although laser-structured electrodes are much thicker than unstructured electrodes, the rate performance (discharge capacity=93%) of the laser-structured electrode is better than that of unstructured electrode at 1C. The simultaneous enhancement of the power and energy densities of the laser-structured electrodes results from the improvement of lithium ion diffusivity and cell polarization.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Effects on laser structuring of thick and dense NMC cathode are investigated. </LI> <LI> Laser structuring enhanced the rate capability of the electrode at high current rate. </LI> <LI> Specific energy also increased, while improving or retaining the power density. </LI> <LI> Diffusion homogeneity and wettability were discussed for the performances. </LI> <LI> Diffusivity and polarization in the cell were analyzed in details. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Silver nanoplates (AgNPs) were used as a colorimetric indicator of pH-induced conformational changes in the protein, cytochorme c (cyt c). Cyt c was covalently bound to the surface of AgNPs, and UV-vis spectroscopy was used to identify changes in the optical properties of the resulting cyt c-AgNP conjugates in colloidal solution over pH, with values ranging from 3.1 to 10.6. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results indicated that the morphological changes in cyt c-AgNP conjugates were dependent on pH. Moreover, pH-induced conformational changes in cyt c could be detected by visual inspection of the color changes in cyt c-AgNPs, which occurred as a result of the coupling effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) by aggregated AgNPs.
