Mezcal: indigenous Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains and their potential as starter cultures

        Francisco Ruiz-Tera´n,Paulina N. Martı´nez-Zepeda,Sara Y. Geyer-de la Merced,Hipo´crates Nolasco-Cancino,Jorge A. Santiago-Urbina 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.2

In this study, 19 indigenous mezcal Saccharomycescerevisiae strains were screened for their toleranceto grow under different stress conditions and their potentialuse in fermentation. All strains were able to tolerate pHvalue of 3, significant levels of glucose (30%), ethanol(12% v/v), and temperature of 37 C. Eleven of them wereable to grow in presence of 15% of ethanol, but only CH7and PA18 strains grew at 42 C. Both were selected forevaluation of their fermentative abilities in maguey juiceand in a synthetic medium incubated at 30 and 40 C. Temperature of 40 C had a positive effect on the ethanolproduction, increasing the productivity and efficiency inmaguey fermentation. Ethyl acetate, isobutanol and isoamylalcohols production was favored at 30 C. Bothevaluated strains presented a good fermentative capacityand production of volatile compounds, suggesting theirpotential use as starter cultures in mezcal fermentation.

Isolation of IgG Antibodies to Toxocara in Ankylosing Spondylitis Patients with Acute Anterior Uveitis

        Francisco-Javier Jiménez-Balderas,Janete García-Jaimes,Rita Ríos,Abraham Zonana-Nacach,Raquel Tapia-,Nayeli Villanueva,Patricia Méndez-Samperio,Jorge-Luis de-la-Rosa-Arana 대한안과학회 2014 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.28 No.3

Purpose: Since few reports had been published on the prevalence of toxocariasis in ankylosing spondylitis (AS)patients with acute non-granulomatous anterior uveitis (ANGAU), the aim of this work was to determine thepresence of antibodies against Toxocara canis in AS patients with ANGAU. Methods: Thirty-six patients (14 female and 22 male) with AS were enrolled in the study. The history of ANGAUwas accepted only if diagnosed by an ophthalmologist. The detection of IgG antibodies to T. canis was determinedby enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, antibodies to Ascaris lumbricoides were alsotested to verify non-specific reactions. Results: The prevalence of ANGAU in the AS patients was 58% (21 / 36), and 38% (8 / 21) of the patients withANGAU were positive for antibodies to Toxocara, while 7% (1 / 15) of AS patients without ANGAU were positivefor T. canis (p = 0.038, two tails; mid-p exact). No antibodies were detected to A. lumbricoides antigens inthe serum samples of patients with AS. Conclusions: These data suggest that the seroprevalence of antibodies to T. canis is high in Mexican patientswith AS-associated uveitis, suggesting a chronic asymptomatic toxocariosis, which could be associated withthe pathogenesis of ANGAU; however, further larger-scale studies are needed to confirm this observation.

High Estradiol Differentially Affects the Expression of the Glucose Transporter Type 4 in Pelvic Floor Muscles of Rats

        María de los Ángeles Carrasco-Ruiz,Laura G. Hernández-Aragón,Jesús Ramsés Chávez-Ríos,Jorge Rodríguez-Antolín,Pablo Pacheco,Margarita Martínez-Gómez,Estela Cuevas-Romero,Francisco Castelán 대한배뇨장애요실금학회 2018 International Neurourology Journal Vol.22 No.3

Purpose: To characterize the relationship between serum estradiol levels and the expression of glucose transporter type 4 (Glut4) in the pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus muscles in female rats. Methods: The muscles were excised from virgin rats during the metestrus and proestrus stages of the estrous cycle, and from sham and ovariectomized rats implanted with empty or estradiol benzoate–filled capsules. The expression of estrogen receptors (ERs) was inspected in the muscles at metestrus and proestrus. Relative Glut4 expression, glycogen content, and serum glucose levels were measured. Appropriate statistical tests were done to identify significant differences (P≤0.05). Results: The pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus muscles expressed ERα and ERβ. Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle were higher at proestrus than at metestrus. No significant changes were observed in the iliococcygeus muscle. In ovariectomized rats, the administration of estradiol benzoate increased Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle alone. Conclusions: High serum estradiol levels increased Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle, but not in the iliococcygeus muscle.

Analysis of productivity, efficiency, and their explanatory factors in the fast fashion sector: New evidence from the international environment

Moreno Justo de Jorge,Velázquez Francisco Javier Martínez 한국마케팅과학회 2023 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.14 No.4

This paper analyses the performance levels of the leading compa- nies in the fast fashion sector, Inditex, H&M and Gap in the period 2005–2019. Additionally, the isolated analysis of Inditex, as a case study, has been considered, with special emphasis on its interna- tionalization process, in the period 1995–2019. The use of different approaches to obtain efficiency and productivity (DEA, intertem- poral and Windows models), have enriched this work. The results obtained indicate a good performance in the resource manage- ment of the companies analyzed. In the case of Inditex, a curvilinear U-shaped relationship was found between efficiency and its level of internationalization. In addition, average increases in TFP are observed in the case of Gap and Inditex. However, Inditex shows a trend of continuous improvement in most of the sub-periods considered, reaching an improvement of 18%.

Effectiveness of Acupuncture in Dental Surgery: A Randomized, Crossover, Controlled Trial

        Maria LB. Gil,Luide M.R.F. Marinho,Marcio de Moraes,Ronaldo S. Wada,Francisco C. Groppo,Jorge E. Sato,Maria L.R. de Sousa 사단법인약침학회 2020 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.13 No.3

Objectives: The objective of this crossover clinical study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Energy Regulation with Acupuncture in clinical occurrences in impacted lower third molar surgeries. Methods: The sample consisted of 22 patients with two impacted third molars, in symmetrical position; divided into two groups: Test Group (TG) with Real Energy Regulation Group and Sham Group (SG) with Acupuncture without Energy Regulation function. The extraction was performed 30 days apart. Energy flow (Ryodoraku Method) and energy regulation performed before extraction were measured. Heart Rate (HR) and Blood Pressure (BP) were evaluated before and after energy regulation and after surgery, residual edema was measured by facial measurements (angle of the mandible to tragus (A-T); angle of the mandible to labial commissure (A-LC); angle of the mandible to the wing of the nose (A-WN); angle of the mandible to the corner of the eye (A-CE); angle of the mandible to the chin (A-C); and mouth opening by the interincisal distance, before and after seven days of surgery. To quantify intraoperative bleeding (ml), blood was aspirated along with the saline solution using a portable vacuum pump adaptor. The amount of saline solution used was subtracted from the final amount of aspirated fluid. Results: Mean of bleeding was lower in TG (p = 0.0392). There were significant differences between groups in facial distances: A-LC (p = 0.010), A-WN (p = 0.030) and A-C (p = 0.008). Conclusion: Energy regulation with real acupuncture was effective in reducing postoperative residual edema and intraoperative bleeding.

Biochemical Properties of an Extracellular Trehalase from Malbranchea pulchella var. Sulfurea

Marita Gimenez Pereira,Luis Henrique Souza Guimarães,Rosa Prazeres Melo Furriel,Maria de Lourdes,Hector Francisco Terenzi,Joao Atilio Jorge 한국미생물학회 2011 The journal of microbiology Vol.49 No.5

The thermophilic fungus Malbranchea pulchella var. sulfurea produced good amounts of extracellular trehalase activity when grown for long periods on starch, maltose or glucose as the main carbon source. Studies with young cultures suggested that the main role of the extracellular acid trehalase is utilizing trehalose as a carbon source. The specific activity of the purified enzyme in the presence of manganese (680 U/mg protein) was comparable to that of other thermophilic fungi enzymes, but many times higher than the values reported for trehalases from other microbial sources. The apparent molecular mass of the native enzyme was estimated to be 104 kDa by gel filtration and 52 kDa by SDS-PAGE, suggesting that the enzyme was composed by two subunits. The carbohydrate content of the purified enzyme was estimated to be 19% and the pI was 3.5. The optimum pH and temperature were 5.0-5.5 and 55°C, respectively. The purified enzyme was stimulated by manganese and inhibited by calcium ions, and insensitive to ATP and ADP, and 1 mM silver ions. The apparent K_M values for trehalose hydrolysis by the purified enzyme in the absence and presence of manganese chloride were 2.70±0.29 and 2.58±0.13 mM, respectively. Manganese ions affected only the apparent V_(max), increasing the catalytic efficiency value by 9.2-fold. The results reported herein indicate that Malbranchea pulchella produces a trehalase with mixed biochemical properties, different from the conventional acid and neutral enzymes and also from trehalases from other thermophilic fungi.

Effect of Glycosylation on the Biochemical Properties of β-Xylosidases from Aspergillus versicolor

Alexandre Favarin Somera,Marita Gimenez Pereira,Luis Henrique Souza Guimarães,Maria de L.T. de M. Polizeli,Héctor Francisco Terenzi,Rosa Prazeres Melo Furriel,João Atílio Jorge 한국미생물학회 2009 The journal of microbiology Vol.47 No.3

Aspergillus versicolor grown on xylan or xylose produces two β-xylosidases with differences in biochemical properties and degree of glycosylation. We investigated the alterations in the biochemical properties of these β-xylosidases after deglycosylation with Endo-H or PNGase F. After deglycosylation, both enzymes migrated faster in PAGE or SDS-PAGE exhibiting the same Rf. Temperature optimum of xylan-induced and xylose-induced β-xylosidases was 45°C and 40°C, respectively, and 35°C after deglycosylation. The xylan- induced enzyme was more active at acidic pH. After deglycosylation, both enzymes had the same pH optimum of 6.0. Thermal resistance at 55°C showed half-life of 15 min and 9 min for xylose- and xylan-induced enzymes, respectively. After deglycosylation, both enzymes exhibited half-lives of 7.5 min. Native enzymes exhibited different responses to ions, while deglycosylated enzymes exhibited identical responses. Limited proteolysis yielded similar polypeptide profiles for the deglycosylated enzymes, suggesting a common polypeptide core with differential glycosylation apparently responsible for their biochemical and biophysical differences.

Neuropsychological Outcome One Year after Carotid Revascularization: A before-and-after Study

        Laura Casas-Hernanz,Maite Garolera,Dolors Badenes,Salvador Quintana,Susana Millán,Noemi Calzado,Jorge de Francisco,Josep Royo,Miquel Aguilar 대한혈관외과학회 2017 Vascular Specialist International Vol.33 No.4

Purpose: The aim of our study was to determine the clinical profile of patients considered cognitive ‘responders’ to surgery in order to establish clinical variables associated with a favorable cognitive performance. Materials and Methods: A total of 70 patients were included in the study. A wellvalidated, comprehensive standardized neurocognitive battery of tests of about 2 hours was administered. Patients were examined twice, 1-week before surgery and 1-year postoperatively. The criterion to be included in the ‘responder’ group was the following: to obtain a positive difference between post-revascularization and pre-revascularization neuropsychological assessment ≥1 standard deviation in ≥2 tests. Results: Twenty-seven patients (38.6%) were cognitive responders to treatment. In bivariate analysis between responders and non-responders, presence of atrophy (P=0.003), small vessels (P=0.577), symptoms (P=0.046), and age (P=0.030) were the factors statistically significant. When comparing cognitive performance before and after carotid revascularization, significant differences were observed in semantic fluency with a lower performance after 12 months (P=0.004, d=0.29), and in the Language index (Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status) (P=0.005, d=0.34). Conclusion: Patients without neurological symptoms, of a younger age and without atrophy and white matter small vessel lesions are better cognitive responders 1-year after carotid revascularization.
