        A Study on the Artistic Representation of the Cellular-Phone Addiction and the Personal Data Leakage of Modern Society

        Although the development of digital technology and network has brought great convenience in modern lives, amongst the aggravated complexity in the contemporary society, modern minds who have failed to create genuine relationships undergo a sense of alienation and solitude that may appear as a type of social pathology called cellular-phone addiction. Also, while the emergence of the information age seemingly brings about benefits including diverse acquisition regarding knowledge and broader communication, underneath exists side effects involving leakage of private information. Especially, being excessively addicted to relationship network may induce one to become insensitive towards leakage of private information without recognizing, and thereby instigating yet another social problem. Media art is very practical in terms of suggesting a critical perspective concerning social phenomena and elevating them into a work of art by rendering them artistically. Particularly, when social problems of the modern days are expressed through digital technology, media art provides the audience with a foundation that will enable them to sympathize without hostility. This dissertation calls attention to the contemporary problems regarding cellular-phone addiction and possible hazards of information leakage based on media art, while at the same time proposing the production process of a media art work that attempts to raise awareness and sympathy on such social issues.

      • UNC119a bridges the transmission of Fyn signals to Rab11, leading to the completion of cytokinesis

        <P>Src family kinases (SFKs) regulate the completion of cytokinesis through signal transduction pathways that lead to the Rab11-dependent phosphorylation of ERK and its localization to the midbody of cytokinetic cells. We find that UNC119a, a known activator of SFKs, plays essential roles in this signaling pathway. UNC119a localizes to the centrosome in interphase cells and begins to translocate from the spindle pole to the spindle midzone after the onset of mitosis; it then localizes to the intercellular bridge in telophase cells and to the midbody in cytokinetic cells. We show that the midbody localization of UNC119a is dependent on Rab11, and that knocking down UNC119a inhibits the Rab11-dependent phosphorylation and midbody localization of ERK and cytokinesis. Moreover, we demonstrate that UNC119a interacts with a Src family kinase, Fyn and is required for the activation of this kinase. These results suggest that UNC119a plays a key role in the Fyn signal transduction pathway, which regulates the completion of cytokinesis via Rab11.</P>

      • A Study on User Interface Based on Hand Gesture Recognition for Live Video Mixing System

        Development in digital technology and video technology significantly contributes to increases of the utilization of video sources in a variety of performances. At the same time, the necessity to promptly control and change the video gets higher, especially in live performance. In these circumstances, if the performer could control the video depending on actions without need of direct contact to the device, live video performance will be much faster and more convenient. In other cases, DJ who carries out mixing music in club and DJ party would like to take a role of visual performer as well, or control background video in realtime corresponding to the music being played. In these cases, gesture recognition based non-contact interface could be advantageous over a traditional way of touching or contacting the device directly. To this end, the starting point of our study is to devise the user interface that enables a live video production making use of hand gesture recognition device. However, the hand gesture recognition based user interface might cause unintended wrong recognition due to similarity of device-controlling hand gesture and normal hand gesture. To prevent this, we introduce the gesture-recognition mode switcher using pre-gesture.

        어린이 놀이로서의 인터랙티브 미디어 설치

        인터랙티브 미디어 설치작품들은 관객의 호기심 과 상상력, 오감을 자극하여 정서적 물리적 상호작용과 자발적 참여를 이끌어내고 새로운 미적 경험을 제공할 뿐 아니라, 어린이용 놀이로서 놀이 본연 의 가치를 드러내는 장점이 있다. 이는 어린이의 감 성발달과 창의성 향상에도 매우 중요한데, 본 연구 에서 제안된 인터랙티브 미디어 설치작품들은 어린 이 놀이로서 이러한 장점들이 잘 드러난다. 또한, 호기심을 자연스럽게 유발하고 장시간 작품에 몰입 하여 놀이처럼 즐기게 함으로써, 기존의 디지털 놀이기기들이 가진 부작용의 염려를 크게 줄일 수 있음을 보여준다. 제시된 작품들은 관객의 적극적인 반응을 이끌어내는 인터랙티브 미디어 설치작품으로, 관객들은 자신의 몸에 반응하는 가상의 이미지 들과 상호작용하며 놀이를 하듯 작품을 감상한다. 이 때, 다양한 무지개색의 물방울, 형형색색의 불꽃, 실로폰 소리 등을 통해 오감을 자극함과 동시에 관 객의 몸에만 반응하게 하여 관객의 적극적 신체활 동을 유발한다. 이는 기존의 디지털기기의 놀이와 달리 놀이 본연의 가치가 잘 드러나며 다수가 동시 에 즐길 수 있어서 타인과의 교감에도 유익하다. Interactive media installation works prompt imagination and stimulate five senses to give new aesthetic experience via emotional and physical interaction and voluntary participation. With these features, interactive media installation works prove their own effectiveness as a plaything for children as well as induce children to interact physically with those works. Additionally, they make children have curiosity spontaneously and enjoy it like a play with being immersed in works for a long time. This means that the interactive media installation works can be fairly valuable whereas the existing digital playthings often give bad influence to children. In this study, several interactive media installation works are introduced, which act as a good plaything by bring interactive and communal manner. Those works induce the audience, especially children, to play with virtually falling rain drops which interact not with other objects but only with the body of the audience. And they give xylophone sounds or change into fireworks with bouncing only when they are touched by the body of audience. Thorough these works, interactive media installation shows a possibility of an excellent digital play for children without the bad antisocial influence which the existing digital games may have.

        Recent year, the vibration induced fatigue and noise of piping work become critical in offshore hydrocarbon production facilities with increasing requests by major oil company. In this paper, the risk base piping vibration induced fatigue assessment of NORSOK L-002 standard and UK Energy Institute guideline have been introduced with real project application practice. Also the piping breakout noise evaluation by flow restriction devices of compressible and in-compressible flow are reviewed with its practical application on real project.

      • Oleamide suppresses lipopolysaccharide-induced expression of iNOS and COX-2 through inhibition of NF-κB activation in BV2 murine microglial cells

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Oleamide (cis-9-octadecenamide) is an endogenous sleep-inducing fatty acid amide that accumulates in the cerebrospinal fluid of the sleep-deprived animals. Microglia are the major immune cells involved in neuroinflammation causing brain damage during infection, ischemia, and neurodegenerative disease. In this study, we examined the effects of oleamide on LPS-induced production of proinflammatory mediators and the mechanisms involved in BV2 microglia. Oleamide inhibited LPS-induced production of NO and prostaglandin E2 as well as expression of iNOS and COX-2. We showed that oleamide blocked LPS-induced NF-κB activation and phosphorylation of inhibitor κB kinase (IKK). We also showed that oleamide inhibited LPS-induced phosphorylation of Akt, p38 MAPK, and ERK, activation of PI 3-kinase, and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Finally, we showed that a specific antagonist of the CB2 receptor, AM630, blocked the inhibitory effects of oleamide on LPS-induced production of proinflammatory mediators and activation of NF-κB. Taken together, our results suggest that oleamide shows an anti-inflammatory effect through inhibition of NF-κB activation in LPS-stimulated BV2 microglia.</P>

      • Costunolide Triggers Apoptosis in Human Leukemia U937 Cells by Depleting Intracellular Thiols

        We have preciously demonstrated that costunolide, a biologically active compound that was isolated from the stem bark of Magnolia sieboldii, induced apoptosis in human cancer cells. In the present study, we investigated the underlying mechanisms and suggest that costunlide induces apoptosis in human promonocytic leukemia U937 cells by depleting the intracellular thiols. Cos-tunolide treatment rapidly depleted the intracellular reduced glutathione (GSH) and protein thiols, and this prereded the ocrurrence of apoptosis. Pretreatment with sulfhydryl compounds such as GSH, N-acetyl-L-cysteline, dithiothreitol and 2-mercaptoethanol almost completely blocked the costunolide-induced apoptosis, highlighting the significance of the intracellular thiol level in the Process. Furthermore, overexpression or Bcl-2 also significantly attenuated the effects of costunolide.The apoptosis-inducing activity of costunolide is likely to depend on the exomethylene moiety because derivatives in which this group was reduced, such as dihydrocostunolide and saussurea lactone, did not deplete the cellular thiols and showed no apoptotic activity. Taken together, the present study demonstrates that the costunolide-induced apoptosis depends on intracellu1ar thiols contents, which are modulated by Bcl-2.
