A lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable battery that uses the reversible reduction of lithium ions to store energy and is the predominant battery type in many industrial and consumer electronics. The lithium-ion batteries are essential to ensure they operate safely. We conducted an exposure assessment five days after a fire in a battery-testing facility. We assessed some of the potentially hazardous materials after a lithium-ion battery fire. We sampled total suspended particles, hydrogen fluoride, and lithium with real-time monitoring of particulate matter (PM) 1, 2.5, and 10 micrometers (μm). The area sampling results indicated that primary potential hazardous materials such as dust, hydrogen fluoride, and lithium were below the recommended limits suggested by the Korean Ministry of Labor and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Values. Based on our assessment, workers were allowed to return to work.
Korea’s Security and Public Order Policy: Why Does KOREA Need a DETECTIVE SYSTEM?

Korea’s rapid economic growth has further diversified its security environment, so Korea has been introducing a private security system to work with police since 1970, which is a crime prevention sys-tem in developed countries. However, in the case of the detective, all of the OECD member countries except Korea are active to introduce it as a major area of private security. Even though the detective system in Korea has not yet been legislated, the private investigators from developed countries have entered into Korea to conduct the detective works since Korea became an OECD member in 1996. Therefore, it is the right time for Korea to prepare for introducing a private detective system. The Korean detective system, however, began in the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), and was regu-lated as Chosun governor general ordinance No. 82. in 1911, and then after liberation, the detective business was conducted again, but on September 23, 1961, the “Private Agency Regulation Act” was enacted and regulated. In Korea, there are a lot of companies that are engaged in real detective business by using the name of a consulting company or the cases where a private security company carries out a detective business, but they are crowded for doing this business with no legal basis. Therefore, this study aims to investigate and discuss the research questions on the necessity of the introduction of Korean detective business law through an in-depth interview with the expert group.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>With the increase in the application of nano-consumer products containing engineered nanoparticles (NPs), the unintended environmental exposure to NPs has been inevitable. Because of the bioaccumulation of NPs, concern about their potential cytotoxicity to aquatic organisms is also growing. Although measuring tools for analyzing particle size and/or concentration of NPs in intracellular uptake of tissues have been well developed, a simultaneous analysis of the two characteristics is difficult. The objective of this study was to use single particle-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS) to measure the bioaccumulation and particle size changes of NPs exposed to zebrafish (<I>Danio rerio</I>) for 7 days. The uptake of NPs in the liver, intestine, and gill tissues was confirmed by electron microscopic (EM) analysis. However, the primary particle size of NPs in tissues could not be determined by the EM analysis. Therefore, sp-ICP-MS coupled with alkaline digestion was used for the easy extraction and immediate analysis of NPs from tissues. Zebrafish were exposed to four NPs (30 and 80 nm gold/silver NPs; AuNPs/AgNPs). Uptake amounts of AgNPs in the liver and intestine were significantly higher than those of AuNPs. Although larger NPs were finally accumulated in the liver and intestine tissues, most of the smaller NPs were filtered in the gills. The sp-ICP-MS method coupled with alkaline digestion enabled the accurate analysis of size, size distribution, and mass concentration of NPs in an aquatic organism.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> SP-ICP-MS was applied to analyze the exposure and uptake of NPs by living zebrafish. </LI> <LI> High recovery efficiency of NPs from the liver of zebrafish was obtained by alkaline extraction. </LI> <LI> Uptake amounts of AgNPs in the liver and intestine were significantly higher than those of AuNPs. </LI> <LI> SP-ICP-MS enabled an accurate analysis of NP features in an aquatic organism. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P><I>Erigeron annuus</I> is a naturalized plant belonging to Compositae (asteraceae) family, which is called the annual fleabane, and commonly found at meadows and roadside. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of the extract of <I>E. annuus</I> roots (EER), as assessed by the paw edema formation and histological analysis in rat, and the productions of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E<SUB>2</SUB> (PGE<SUB>2</SUB>), and pro-inflammatory cytokines in Raw264.7 murine macrophages. Carrageenan treatment promoted infiltration of inflammatory cells and caused swelling in the hind paw. Oral administrations of EER (0.3 g/kg and 1 g/kg) attenuated acute inflammation similar to the result using dexamethasone (1 mg/kg). Treatment of macrophages with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) simulated inflammatory condition: LPS significantly increased the productions of NO, PGE<SUB>2</SUB>, and proinflammatory cytokines. EER suppressed activation of macrophages, preventing the induction of iNOS and COX-2 protein expressions. LPS treatment induced phosphorylation of I-<I><I>κ</I></I>B<I><I>α</I></I> and increased the level of nuclear NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B protein, both of which were suppressed by concomitant treatment of EER. In conclusion, EER ameliorated acute inflammation in rats, and the induction of NO, PGE<SUB>2</SUB>, and proinflammatory cytokines in Raw264.7 cells. EER's effects may be associated with its inhibition of NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B activation, suggesting its effect on inflammatory diseases.</P>

To establish new metal groundwater standard, 5 metals such as aluminum, chromium, iron, manganese, and selenium were evaluated by Chemical Ranking Of groundWater pollutaNts (CROWN) including possibility of exposure, toxicity, interest factor, connection standard for other media, and data reliability. 430 groundwater samples in 2013 and 2014 were collected semiannually from 110 groundwater wells and they were analyzed for selenium, manganese, iron, chromium, and aluminum. For this study, 430 groundwater samples were categorized into 3 geological distribution features, such as igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock region and geological background levels were divided by pre-selection methods. For the results, the average concentrations of aluminum, chromium, iron, manganese, and selenium in 430 groundwater samples were 0.0008 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP>, 0.0001 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP>, 0.174 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP>, 0.083 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP>, and 0.0004 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP><SUP></SUP>, respectively. In addition, among various geologies, average concentration of selenium was the highest in igneous rock region, average concentrations of chromium, manganese and aluminum were the greatest in sedimentary rock region, and average concentration of iron was the most high in metamorphic rock region. As a result of the geological background concentration with pre-selection method, background concentrations of selenium and aluminum in groundwater samples were the highest from sedimentary rock as 0.0010 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> and 0.0029 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> and background concentrations of manganese and iron in groundwater samples were the greatest from metamorphic rock as 0.460 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP> and 1.574 mg L<SUP>-1</SUP>, and no chromium background concentration in groundwater samples was found from all geology.

<P>Nanoscale assemblies composed of different types of nanoparticles (NPs) can reveal interesting aspects about material properties beyond the functions of individual constituent NPs. This research direction may also represent current challenges in nanoscience toward practical applications. With respect to the assembling method, synthetic or biological nanostructures can be utilized to organize heterogeneous NPs in specific sites via chemical or physical interactions. However, those assembling methods often encounter uncontrollable particle aggregation or phase separation. In this study, we anticipated that the self-segregating properties of block copolymer micelles could be particularly useful for organizing heterogeneous NPs, because the presence of chemically distinct domains such as the core and the corona can facilitate the selective placement of constituent NPs in separate domains. Here, we simultaneously functionalized the core and the corona of micelles by Au NPs and Ag NPs, which exhibited plasmonic and catalytic functions, respectively. Our primacy question is whether these plasmonic and catalytic functions can be combined in the assembled structures to engineer the kinetics of a model chemical reaction. To test this hypothesis, the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol was selected to evaluate the collective properties of the micellar assemblies in a chemical reaction.</P>
