Processing SPARQL queries with regular expressions in RDF databases
Lee, Jinsoo,Pham, Minh-Duc,Lee, Jihwan,Han, Wook-Shin,Cho, Hune,Yu, Hwanjo,Lee, Jeong-Hoon BioMed Central 2011 BMC bioinformatics Vol.12 No.suppl2
<P><B>Background</B></P><P>As the Resource Description Framework (RDF) data model is widely used for modeling and sharing a lot of online bioinformatics resources such as Uniprot (dev.isb-sib.ch/projects/uniprot-rdf) or Bio2RDF (bio2rdf.org), SPARQL - a W3C recommendation query for RDF databases - has become an important query language for querying the bioinformatics knowledge bases. Moreover, due to the diversity of users’ requests for extracting information from the RDF data as well as the lack of users’ knowledge about the exact value of each fact in the RDF databases, it is desirable to use the SPARQL query with regular expression patterns for querying the RDF data. To the best of our knowledge, there is currently no work that efficiently supports regular expression processing in SPARQL over RDF databases. Most of the existing techniques for processing regular expressions are designed for querying a text corpus, or only for supporting the matching over the paths in an RDF graph.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>In this paper, we propose a novel framework for supporting regular expression processing in SPARQL query. Our contributions can be summarized as follows. 1) We propose an efficient framework for processing SPARQL queries with regular expression patterns in RDF databases. 2) We propose a cost model in order to adapt the proposed framework in the existing query optimizers. 3) We build a prototype for the proposed framework in C++ and conduct extensive experiments demonstrating the efficiency and effectiveness of our technique.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Experiments with a full-blown RDF engine show that our framework outperforms the existing ones by up to two orders of magnitude in processing SPARQL queries with regular expression patterns.</P>

<P>The field emissive, electrical, magnetic, and structural characteristics of nickel (Ni) nanowires synthesized using the electrochemical deposition method with an alumina nanoporous template are reported. The synthesis and formation of Ni nanowires were confirmed by XRD, SEM, and HR-TEM experiments. Ferromagnetic hysteresis curves and the metallic temperature dependence of the current–voltage characteristics were observed for the Ni nanowire systems. The nanotip emitters of the field emission cells of the Ni nanowires after O2 plasma treatment were easily patterned using the solution drop casting (SDC) method, in which the Ni nanowires were homogeneously dispersed in organic solvents, and then dropped and dried on an n-type doped Si substrate as the cathode. For the O2 plasma treated Ni nanowires, we observed that the inhomogeneous oxidized layer on their surface was reduced, that the current density of the field emission cell increased from ∼3.0 × 10−9 to ∼1.0 × 10−3 A cm−2 due to field emission, and that the lowest threshold electric field was ∼4 V µm−1. The field enhancement factor was estimated as ∼1300 for the O2 plasma treated Ni nanowires. The evolution of the field emission obtained from the phosphor screen was observed at different applied electric fields. </P>

This paper examines the effectiveness of the three macro-prudential measures introduced by the Korean government in 2010 and 2011: (i) introduction of limit for FX forward positions of domestic banks and foreign bank branches, (ii) reintroduction of tax on foreign investors" earnings from Korean government bonds, and (iii) imposition of macro-prudential stability levy on non-deposit foreign currency liabilities appeared in bank balance sheets. The results show that the three measures were not successful: The limits of FX forward position did not lead to the decrease in foreign borrowings. The reintroduction of the tax did not reduce foreign investments in Korean government bonds. Lastly, the levy on non-deposit foreign currency liabilities did not lower the foreign borrowings from the banks and did not result in more financing through deposits for banks. The ineffectiveness of the capital flow management system in controling the amount of foreign capital flows implies that the system might not be effective in mitigating the pressure on exchange rate caused by excessive volatility of foreign capital flows.

Background: The national Public-Private Mix (PPM) tuberculosis (TB) control project provides for the comprehensive management of TB patients at private hospitals in South Korea. Surveillance and monitoring of TB under the PPM project are essential toward achieving TB elimination goals. Methods: TB is a nationally notifiable disease in South Korea and is monitored using the surveillance system. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention quarterly generates monitoring indicators for TB management, used to evaluate activities of the PPM hospitals by the central steering committee of the national PPM TB control project. Based on the notification date, TB patients at PPM hospitals were enrolled in each quarter, forming a cohort, and followed up for at least 12 months to identify treatment outcomes. This report analyzed the dataset of cohorts the first quarter of 2016 through the fourth quarter of 2017. Results: The coverage of sputum, smear, and culture tests among the pulmonary TB cases were 92.8% and 91.5%, respectively. The percentage of positive sputum smear and culture test results were 30.7% and 61.5%, respectively. The coverage of drug susceptibility tests among the culture-confirmed cases was 92.8%. The treatment success rate among the smear-positive drug-susceptible cases was 83.2%. The coverage of latent TB infection treatment among the childhood TB contacts was significantly higher than that among the adult contacts (85.6% vs. 56.0%, p=0.001). Conclusion: This is the first official report to analyze monitoring indicators, describing the current status of the national PPM TB control project. To sustain its effect, strengthening the monitoring and evaluation systems is essential.
The Effects of Export Diversification on Macroeconomic Stabilization: Evidence from Korea
LEE, JINSOO,YU, BOK-KEUN Korea Development Institute 2019 KDI Journal of Economic Policy (KDI JEP) Vol.41 No.1
This paper studies whether export diversification mitigated the negative effect of the global financial crisis on exports using the Korean case. Specifically, we use annual data on the exports of 24 Korean manufacturing industries from 2000 to 2016 and examine whether the negative effect of the crisis on exports was less prevalent in industries that were more diversified in terms of country and product. We also examine whether export competitiveness, as measured by the revealed comparative advantage index by industry, had a mitigating effect on trade during the crisis. In order to study these issues, we use panel regression with a fixed-effect model for 24 Korean manufacturing industries. From our empirical analysis, we find that country diversification weakened the negative impact of the global financial crisis on Korea's exports, whereas neither product diversification nor export competitiveness did so.
