Longevity Determinants of Embroidery Enterprises in Taal, Batangas, Philippines

        Divine Krizza B. Padua,Jewel Joanna S. Cabardo,Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba,Jimmy B. Williams 강원대학교 경영경제연구소 2016 Asia-Pacific Journal of Business Vol.7 No.1

The study specifically aimed to identify factors affecting business longevity. It focused on knowing how embroidery enterprises managed to persist in the industry for many years despite the competitive business environment. After discovering the significant relationships of such factors to longevity, problems experienced by the enterprise cluster were ascertained in order to come up with recommendations that can be proposed to the enterprise owners. Embroidery entrepreneurs have been experiencing a continuous decline in sales due to lack of innovation and intense competition. In the evaluation of their personal entrepreneurial competencies, they scored low on risk-taking, persuasion and networking, and opportunity seeking; thus, implying that these are their weaknesses. On the other hand, the statistical results of this study say that longevity is a function of the entrepreneur’s competencies (i.e., persistence, commitment to work contract, demand for quality and efficiency, information seeking, and systematic planning or monitoring), the generation currently managing the business, competition, and the customer’s preferences. These results suggest that these independent variables are significant and are deemed critical to business longevity. Thus, entrepreneurs have to find ways on how to use these competencies as an advantage in reinventing their businesses and in reviving their industry.

        THE ASIAN ORGANIC FERTILIZER INDUSTRY

        Ma,Khristine T,Helera,Jimmy B,Williams,Jeanette Angeline B,Madamba,Normito R,Zapata Jr 한국무역연구원 2013 貿易 硏究 Vol.9 No.2

Over the years, the market for organic fertilizers has expanded rapidly. The number of commercially produced organic fertilizers has increased in a number of Asian countries. In the Philippines, considerable advancements have already been achieved relative to organic fertilizer production. The demand for organic fertilizer is largely influenced by the development in the organic agriculture industry. Consumers have placed so much value on the nutritive and safety aspect of organically produced foods. In Asia, China has the largest production capacity when it comes to organic fertilizer. The largest importer of organic fertilizer in Asia, on the other hand, is Japan. The pelletized chicken manure fertilizer is one product Philippine poultry producers can bank on to enter the export market. This paper not only showed that it is feasible to put up a pelletized poultry manure fertilizer production plant in the country, but that the potentials for this underexplored product have tremendous profit implications for the Philippines.

      • Disaggregating the Coffee Supply Chain Network in Benguet, Philippines

Dia Noelle F. Velasco,Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba,Loida E. Mojica,Jimmy B. Williams The International Academy of Global Business and T 2016 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.12 No.1

Baguio City and the municipality of La Trinidad are the centers of coffee trading in Benguet and the Cordillera Region in the Philippines. The study examines the coffee supply chain network in both places while providing an overview of the global, national, and local coffee industry, explaining the relationships among the players in the supply chain network at the disaggregate level, determining the issues, weaknesses, and gaps, and offering recommendations for each supply chain and the entire network. Methodologies employed were key informant interviews of farmers, traders and coffee shop operators, visual observations and secondary data gathering, and descriptive analysis. Findings reveal that Benguet coffee supply chains have a complex and complicated networks of chain participants, interactions, and relationships. Seven supply chains which comprise the whole supply chain network in the area were identified with varying degrees of relational ties. Recommended interventions include developing road networks in the area, providing good quality planting materials, and utilizing financing products or schemes that are friendly to chain participants. Some investment entry points at the network level are the establishment of a coffee institute or center and coffee processing and/or warehousing or storage facilities.

      • Evolving Coco Coir Supply Chains. The Case of the Coco Coir Industry Cluster in Laguna, Philippines

        Arlene C. Gutierrez,Clarissa G. Lontoc,Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba,Jimmy B. Williams 한국무역연구원 2013 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.9 No.1

One of the most vital agro-based and export industries in the Philippines and among the most studied is the coconut industry. Among the many products from coconut, the potential of coco coir particularly in climate change mitigation is not widely tapped. The Philippines exports minimal volumes of coco coir to the global market despite its status as one of the largest coconut producers in the world. This study analyzed the case of the Laguna coir fiber industry cluster structure and players in the context of the current status, issues and opportunities that the industry faces as well as the global trends that significantly affect the industry. Emerging local and export opportunities are discussed in a strategy blueprint for policy-makers and other industry stakeholders. Managing a sustainable, agile industry cluster using adaptable supply chain design strategy via industry organization and governance changes, better knowledge management, enhanced readiness and cohesiveness of chain participant interaction within supply chains and among supply chain networks and synergistic policies is suggested.

      • Technical Efficiency and Profitability Analyses of Tea Production in Phú Tho Province, Vietnam

        Hoang Van Hung,Reynaldo L. Tan,Dinah Pura T. Depositario,Jimmy B. Williams 한국무역연구원 2012 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.8 No.2

In an economy where resources are scarce, raising productivity by improving an economic activity’s efficiency becomes the more feasible option. This study analyzed the technical efficiency of tea production in Phú Tho province, Vietnam in order to identify the factors which could contribute to greater productivity and profitability. Using a stochastic frontier approach to determine the sources of productive efficiency/inefficiency, data for the year 2010 from 182 tea farmers from six communes in Phú Tho province in Vietnam was analyzed to examine technical efficiency in tea production. Results show that education, experience, and organization membership have significant negative relationships with technical inefficiency. Further, the results reveal that the technical efficiency of tea farms ranged from 43.50% to 99.99% with a mean of 80.09%, which suggests that the tea output of the “average farmer” could still be increased by 19.91% if the technology followed by the “best performers” is adopted. It was found that improved yield can be achieved by increasing labor presently applied and by planting a higher-yielding variety. A cost and return analysis showed that the farmers who planted new varieties (LDP) posted higher income compared to those who planted the old variety (PH).
