      • Insect-specific microRNA involved in the development of the silkworm Bombyx mori

        Yong Zhang,Xue Zhou,Xie Ge,Jiang-Hao Jiang,Mu-Wang Li,Shi-Hai Jia,Xiao-Nan Yang,Yun-Chao Kan,Xue-Xia Miao,Guo-Ping Zhao,Fei Li,Yong-Ping Huang 한국응용곤충학회 2009 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2009 No.10

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous non-coding genes that participate in post-transcription regulation by either degrading mRNA or blocking its translation. It is considered to be very important in regulating insect development and metamorphosis. Insects are the largest group of animals and are extremely valuable in biological and agriculture research. Insects are also important pests to human health and agriculture, and efforts are necessary protect both humans and plants from disease and damage. Despite their importance, insects lag behind mammals, nematodes, and plants in miRNA research. At present, only 279 insect miRNAs have been identified from Drosophila melanogaster, Anopheles gambiae, Apis mellifera, Bombyx mori, and D. pseudoobscura in miRBase, and most of these miRNAs were computationally predicted without experimental validation. Functional analysis of insect miRNAs has only been conducted in D. melanogaster.

The Functional, Psychological and Economic Impacts 6 Months Post Major Trauma

Yun Le Linn,Hao Wen Jiang,Norhayati Mohd Jainodin,Pei Leng Chong,Sock Teng Chin,Sachin Mathur 대한외상중환자외과학회 2023 Journal of Acute Care Surgery Vol.13 No.3

Purpose: The consequences of severe traumatic injury extend beyond hospital admission and have the potential for long-term functional, psychological, and economic sequalae. This study investigated patient outcomes 6 months following major trauma. Methods: Using the National Trauma Registry, database of patients who were admitted between 2016-18 in a tertiary trauma hospital for major trauma [Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥ 16] a review was performed on 6-month outcomes [including functional outcomes, self-reported state of health and outcome scores (EuroQol-5 Dimension score and Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended)]. Result: There were 637 patients who were treated for major trauma (ISS ≥ 16); the median age was 64 years (range 16-100) and 435 (68.3%) patients were male. The most common injury mechanisms included falling from height (56.5%) and motor vehicle accident (27.0%). The median ISS was 24 (range 16-75). After 6 months, 87.6% of responders were living at home, 25.0% were back to work, and 55.1% were ambulating independently. The median self-rated state of health was 73 at baseline and 64 at 6 months. Age and length of stay were independent predictors of return to ambulation using multivariate analysis. Age, Abbreviated Injury Scale external, Glasgow Coma Scale on Emergency Department arrival, heart rate, and need for transfusion were independent predictors of failure to return to work at 6 months using multivariate analysis. Charlson Comorbidity Index, Glasgow Coma Scale on arrival, temperature, pain and need for inpatient rehabilitation were independent predictors of mortality at 6 months. Conclusion: Recovery from major trauma is multi-faceted and requires a team-based approach well beyond discharge.

      • Effect of Embelin on TRAIL Receptor 2 mAb-induced Apoptosis of TRAIL-resistant A549 Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Cells

Jiang, Lei,Hao, Jin-Li,Jin, Mu-Lan,Zhang, Yun-Gang,Wei, Ping Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.10

Introduction: Some non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumor cells are insensitive to tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) -based therapy. This study was conducted to examine the effect of embelin on the sensitivity of the A549 NSCLC cell line to TRAIL receptor2 (TRAILR2) monoclonal antibodies and to investigate the potential mechanisms. Materials and Methods: A549 cells were treated with embelin, TRAILR2 mAb or a combination of both. Cell viability was measured using ATPlite assay and apoptosis rates were determined by flow cytometry with AnnexinV-FITC and propidium iodide staining, with the expression levels of proteins analyzed by Western blotting. Results: The cell survival rate of separate treatments with 100 ng/ml TRAILR2 antibody or 25 uM embelin were $81.5{\pm}1.57%$ and $61.7{\pm}2.84%$, respectively. Their combined use markedly decreased cell viability in A549 cells to $28.1{\pm}1.97%$ (P<0.05). The general caspase inhibitor Z-VAD-FMK could inhibit the embelin-enhanced sensitivity of A549 cells to TRAILR2 mAb ($75.97{\pm}3.17%$)(P<0.05). Both flow cytometry and cell morphological analysis showed that embelin was able to increase TRAIL-induced apoptosis in A549 cells. Combined treatment with embelin and TRAILR2 mAb augmented the activation of initiator caspases and effector caspase. In addition, A549 cells showed increasing levels of TRAILR2 protein and decreasing levels of Bcl-2, survivin and c-FLIP following the treatment with embelin+TRAILR2 mAb. Conclusions: Embelin could enhance TRAIL-induced apoptosis in A549 cells. The synergistic effect of the combination treatment might be due to modulation of multiple components in the TRAIL receptor-mediated apoptotic signaling pathway, including TRAILR2, XIAP, survivin, Bcl-2 and c-FLIP.

Amelioration of radiation-induced liver damage by p-coumaric acid in mice

        Yun-Hong Li,Jiang-Xue Wu,Qian He,Jia Gu,Lin Zhang,Hao-Zhi Niu,Xin-Wen Zhang,Han-Ting Zhao,Jia-Ying Xu,Li-qiang Qin 한국식품과학회 2022 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.31 No.10

Radiation-induced liver damage (RILD) is a spiny problem in radiotherapy or other circumstances that exposure to radiation. The need for radioprotective agent is increasing to protect liver tissue. This study aimed to explore the hepatoprotective effect of p-coumaric acid (CA) against RILD. C57BL/6 male mice were exposed to 4 Gy irradiation and administrated with CA for 4 days starting on the same day of irradiation. Mice were sacrificed to obtain blood and liver tissues on day 3.5 or 14 post irradiation, respectively. The blood and liver tissues were collected. As compared with the only irradiated group, CA supplementation improved liver morphology, decreased serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, inhibited BCL2-associated X (BAX) protein expression, and improved the mice hematopoietic function. CA at the dose of 100 mg/kg body weight showed better effect compared to the other doses. Thus, CA might possess potential to protect against RILD.

Effect of notch position on creep damage for brazed joint

        Luo, Yun,Jiang, Wenchun,Zhang, Qian,Zhang, Weiya,Woo, Wanchuck,Tu, Shan-Tung,Hao, Muming Elsevier Applied Science 2016 Advances in engineering software Vol.100 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, we investigated the effect of notch position on creep damage for Hastelloy C276-BNi2 brazed joint. Three different types of notches locate in edge of base metal (base notch), edge of filler metal (surface notch) and center of filler metal (inside notch) were compared, and the influence of notch geometric parameters on creep damage was also investigated. The results show that the different notch position and dimension generate different creep damage distributions and have a great influence on creep life. The creep failure is the easiest to occur in surface notch, then the base notch, and the last is inside notch. The brazed joint with higher maximum principal stress and von Mises stress generates creep failure easier. For the base notch, the failure time increases with the increase of base notch distance and the creep failure location moves gradually from the center of filler metal to notch tip. The notch locating away from filler metal is beneficial to reduce the creep damage in filler metal and enhance the creep life. For the inside notch, the failure time decreases with notch length increases and the maximum creep damage locates at notch tip. With the increase of inside notch width, the failure time increases first and then keep steadiness, and the failure location moves away from notch tip. The effects of notch position and dimension should be fully considered in creep failure analyses and life assessments of brazed joints.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The creep failure is easy generate in surface notch. </LI> <LI> The far away notch is helpful to reduce the creep damage of filler metal. </LI> <LI> As H increases, the failure location moves from filler metal to base metal. </LI> <LI> As H increases, the failure time increases first then keeps stable. </LI> <LI> The failure time decreases with L increases while it increases with W increases. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Influence of Clinically Significant Portal Hypertension on Hepatectomy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: a Meta-analysis

Tang, Yun-Hao,Zhu, Wen-Jiang,Wen, Tian-Fu Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.4

Background: Clinically significant portal hypertension (PHT) is considered as a contraindication for hepatectomy according to the guidelines of the European Association for Study of Liver and the American Association for Study of Liver Diseases. However, this issue remains controversial. Here we performed a metaanalysis to evaluate the impact of PHT on the results of hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: Cohort studies evaluating the impact of clinically significant PHT, defined as oesophageal varices and/or splenomegaly associated with thrombocytopenia, on the results of hepatectomy for HCC were identified using a predefined search strategy. Summary risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for PHT and outcomes after hepatectomy for HCC were calculated. Results: Seven cohort studies which including 574 cases with PHT and 1,354 cases without PHT were considered eligible for inclusion. The meta-analysis showed that, in all patients, pooled RRs of post-operative liver failure, post-operative ascites, peri-operative blood transfusion, operative mortality, 3- and 5-year overall survival associated with PHT were 2.23 (95% CI: 1.48-3.34, P=0.0001), 1.77 (95% CI: 1.19-2.64, P=0.005), 1.23 (95% CI: 1.03-1.49, P=0.03), 2.58 (95% CI: 1.12-5.96, P=0.03), 0.82 (95% CI: 0.75-0.88, P<0.00001) and 0.76 (95% CI: 0.69-0.85, P<0.00001), respectively. In subgroup analysis, similar results were found in Child-Pugh class A patients. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggests that presence of oesophageal varices and/or splenomegaly associated with thrombocytopenia is associated with higher rates of post-operative complications and poor long-term survival after hepatectomy for HCC.

A New Neutral-point Voltage Balance Control Based on Virtual Space Vector Modulation for Three-Level NPC Converter

        Yuan Lei,Qing Yi,Jiang Yun-hao,Xu An-fei 대한전기학회 2023 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.18 No.2

To address the neutral-point voltage imbalance problem of three-level NPC converters, a novel neutral-point voltage balance control algorithm based on virtual space vector is proposed. The method reoptimizes the partitioning and reduces the 6 small sectors in the conventional virtual space vector pulse width modulation algorithm to 5 small sectors, reducing the computational effort. Meanwhile, the regulation factor of neutral-point voltage is introduced, and the influence of virtual vector on the neutral-point voltage is used to fine-tune the size of the regulation factor, and the neutral-point voltage is controlled by a kind of hysteresis loop control for neutral-point voltage balancing. Simulation and experimental results show that the algorithm has a good neutral-point voltage balancing effect.
