Revitalizing Philippine Theater: A Framework for Theater as Creative Entrepreneurship

Purpose – Despite the rich culture of the Philippines, the country has not been able to create products, services, and experiences that sustainably cater to domestic and international markets. Instead of harnessing its creative force to drive economic growth, it remains a creative labor supplier. The country is envisioned to become “a major creative hub in the Asia-Pacific, with strong and thriving creative industries” (British Council, 2017). Performing arts, including theater, is a key creative industries sector. However, theater is beset with precarity and instability (Santiago, 2021). This study sought to analyze the challenges and opportunities for revitalizing theater as an industry. Design/Methodology/Approach – In this investigation, a critical review was employed. This methodology not only describes the phenomena, but also formulates a re-conceptualization based on an integrative review of old and current models. A comparative analysis of creative economy models was made between Philippine theater and theaters internationally. Findings – Philippine theater is not fully utilizing its economic potential because current models involve high production costs, need for highly specialized creative labor, and lack of enabling policies. Among the four creative economy models (Potts and Cunningham, 2010), Philippine theater may benefit from Model 3, the Innovation Model, which may evolve into Model 4. Mapping representative theater companies and genres across the models provides insights into directions for theater innovations. A conceptual framework for innovating Philippine theater through Creative Entrepreneurship is forwarded. Research Implications – The framework yields valuable insights for theater managers, educators, heritage and cultural advocates, tourism creatives, and entrepreneurs.

Consistent with the contention that happiness leads to desirable outcomes (Diener, 2012), the current study examines the relationship of subjective well-being (SWB) to self-esteem of Filipino adolescents. The cognitive and affective domains of SWB were utilized as determinants of global self-esteem through regression analyses. Findings of the study showed that gender, and all dimensions of SWB significantly predicted the appraisal of self-worth among the respondents, with life satisfaction as its strongest predictor. From these results, premises of the broaden-and-build theory was confirmed as it elaborates how adolescents` appreciation of self profits from positive emotions and satisfaction with life. Implications of the results are discussed.

This article deals with the sensor-less control of a DC Motor via a SEPIC Converter-Full Bridge combination powered through solar panels. We simultaneously regulate, both, the output voltage of the SEPIC-converter to a value larger than the solar panel output voltage, and the shaft angular velocity, in any of the turning senses, so that it tracks a pre-specified constant reference. The main result of our proposed control scheme is an efficient linear controller obtained via Lyapunov. This controller is based on measurements of the converter currents and voltages, and the DC motor armature current. The control law is derived using an exact stabilization error dynamics model, from which a static linear passive feedback control law is derived. All values of the constant references are parameterized in terms of the equilibrium point of the multivariable system: the SEPIC converter desired output voltage, the solar panel output voltage at its Maximun Power Point (MPP), and the DC motor desired constant angular velocity. The switched control realization of the designed average continuous feedback control law is accomplished by means of a, discrete-valued, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). Experimental results are presented demonstrating the viability of our proposal.

This case report shows an effective esophageal stent placement via retrograde (transgastric) approach under fluoroscopic guidance in the interven-tional radiology suite. This alternative can be evaluated and offered to patients that suffer from a firm esophageal occlusion before a major proce-dure such as surgery can be considered. Thus, decreasing major surgery complications and improving the quality of life.
A characterization of the hyperbolic disc among constant width bodies

In this paper we prove a condition under which a hyperbolic starshaped set has a center of hyperbolic symmetry. We also give the definition of isometric diameters for a hyperbolic convex set, which behave similar to affine diameters for Euclidean convex sets. Using this concept, we give a definition of constant hyperbolic width and we prove that the only hyperbolic sets with constant hyperbolic width and with a hyperbolic center of symmetry are hyperbolic discs.

Pleurotus djamor is an edible mushroom that has medicinal properties. This study aimed to assess the in vitro activity of P. djamor extracts and fractions against Haemonchus contortus eggs and exsheathed infective larvae (L3). Crude hydroalcoholic extracts were obtained by maceration and fractions were obtained through chromatography. Metabolite identity was determined using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The results showed that P. djamor extracts had no significant activity against eggs at the concentrations used. However, the extract showed 98.7% and 77% larval mortality 72 h postconfrontation at 320 and at 160 mg/mL, respectively. The chromatography analysis resulted in 23 fractions that were eventually grouped into three fractions (E1, E2, and E3). These fractions showed the following egg hatching inhibition percentages: E1 = 100, E2 = 38.7, and E3 = 5.5 at 10 mg/mL concentration 72 h postexposure. Likewise, larval mortality percentages after this period were 90.6, 100, and 0.44 at 40 mg/mL (P < .05), respectively. The GC-MS showed five major compounds in E1 fraction, including four fatty acids: (i) pentadecanoic, (ii) hexadecanoic, (iii) octadecadienoic, (iv) octadecanoic acid, and one terpene identified as β-sitosterol. We concluded that the edible mushroom P. djamor possesses nematicidal metabolites, which could be used as an alternative anthelmintic treatment.
