Background and Objectives: Little is known about studies evaluating positive airway pressure (PAP) compliance after re-prescription. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate PAP compliance after re-prescription in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients who failed initial PAP therapy. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed OSA patients who had received a re-prescription for PAP from March 2020 to June 2021. We compared the compliance rate between initial prescription and re-prescription for PAP and investigated the reasons for PAP failure after the first prescription. Results: A total of 10 consecutive OSA patients (mean age=45.6±13.7 years and male:female=8:2) who received a re-prescription for PAP were included. Of them, 8 patients (80%) met the compliance criteria (i.e., Korean National Health Insurance criteria) for PAP after re-prescription. The compliance rate increased from 36.3±18.2% (initial prescription) to 61.3±28.8% (re-prescription); this was not of statistical significance (p=0.074). PAP/mask-related discomfort was the most common reason for PAP failure, followed by nasal obstruction, unintentional mask removal, and pressure-related discomfort. Conclusion: Even if initial PAP therapy fails, the proportion of patients who meet the compliance criteria may be improved through various forms of clinical aid and support after re-prescription of PAP.

A newly designed Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter (TEPC) has been developed for the CubeSat mission, SIGMA (Scientific cubesat with Instruments for Global Magnetic field and rAdiation) to investigate space radiation. In order to test the performance of the TEPC, we have performed heavy ion beam experiments with the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC), Japan. In space, human cells can be exposed to complex radiation sources, such as X-ray, Gamma ray, energetic electrons, protons, neutrons and heavy charged particles in a huge range of energies. These generate much a larger range of Linear Energy Transfer (LET) than on the ground and cause unexpected effects on human cells. In order to measure a large range of LET, from 0.3 to 1,000 keV/μm, we developed a compact TEPC which measures ionized particles produced by collisions between radiation sources and tissue equivalent materials in the detector. By measuring LET spectra, we can easily derive the equivalent dose from the complicated space radiation field. In this HIMAC experiment, we successfully obtained the linearity response for the TEPC with Fe 500 MeV/u and C 290 MeV/u beams and demonstrated the performance of the active radiation detector.

<P>Schisandra chinensis Turcz. fruit is widely used to treat skin diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the anti-inflammatory effects of the methanol extract of S. chinensis (MESC) on 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced contact dermatitis (CD) in mice. The effects of MESC on ear thickness and weight, histopathological changes, immune cell filtration and cytokine production were investigated in DNFB-induced CD mice. Topical application of MESC effectively inhibited ear swelling (30 or 300 μg on the left ear, P<0.001; 30 μg on the right ear, P<0.001). MESC also inhibited hyperplasia, spongiosis (100 μg/ear, P<0.05 and 300 μg/ear, P<0.001, respectively) and immune cell infiltration (100 μg/ear, P<0.05; 300 μg/ear, P<0.001) induced by DNFB. In addition, MESC suppressed increases in tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α levels (100 or 300 μg/ear, P<0.05), interferon (INF)-γ (30 μg/ear, P<0.05; 100 μg/ear, P<0.01; 300 μg/ear, P<0.001), interleukin (IL)-6 (300 μg/ear, P<0.05) and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 (30 μg/ear, P<0.05; 100 μg/ear, P<0.01; 300 μg/ear, P<0.001). These results suggest that the anti-inflammatory effects of MESC are mediated by the reduced production of TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-6 and MCP-1, and that MESC has potential use for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases.</P>
MicroRNA-mediated Regulation of the Development and Functions of Follicular Helper T cells

<P>The germinal center reaction is a key event of humoral immunity, providing long-lived immunological memory. Follicular helper T (T<SUB>FH</SUB>) cells are a specialized subset of CD4<SUP>+</SUP> T cells located in the follicles, which help B cells and thus control the germinal center reaction. T<SUB>FH</SUB> cell development is achieved by multi-step processes of interactions with dendritic cells and B cells along with the coordination of various transcription factors. Since the T helper cell fate decision program is determined by subtle changes in regulatory molecules, fine tuning of these dynamic interactions is crucial for the generation functional T<SUB>FH</SUB> cells. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as important post-transcriptional regulatory molecules for gene expression, which consequently modulate diverse biological functions. In the last decade, the miRNA-mediated regulation network for the germinal center reaction has been extensively explored in T cells and B cells, resulting in the identification of several key miRNA species and their target genes. Here, we review the current knowledge of the miRNA-mediated control of the germinal center reaction, focusing on the aspect of T cell regulation in particular. In addition, we highlight the most important issues related to defining the functional target genes of the relevant miRNAs. We believe that the studies that uncover the miRNA-mediated regulatory axis of T<SUB>FH</SUB> cell generation and functions by defining their functional target genes might provide additional opportunities to understand germinal center reactions.</P>

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of vocabulary knowledge on the learners’ reading comprehension of the Korean EFL students. This study has been carried out upon the hypothesis that there is a significant relationship among vocabulary, ability to infer and reading comprehension skills. After the pre-test designed to choose the target group, twenty six participants selected as intermediate level were required to take Test I and II. Test I, where twenty words are underlined in the passage, aims to reveal correlational relationship between vocabulary and reading comprehension ability. The result showed that there is correlational relationship. Test II intends to reveal the relationship among vocabulary knowledge, ability to infer and reading comprehension. To this end, twenty words were provided in the blank form in the reading passage and participants were asked to select the correct answers describing the meaning of passages. Although those words were not exposed in the test, students with high score in pre-test got higher score in Test II in general. This result implies that indirect vocabulary learning strategy is effective for enhancing reading comprehension and ability to draw inference. In sum, vocabulary plays a pivotal role in reading comprehension for Korean EFL students and the best way to learn new words is to direct life experiences and to expose various experiences or to read a clear context for word learning and more complex ideas.
