        프랑스 우생 운동의 과학적 토대: 19세기 후반에서 20세기 전반까지

        19세기 말에서 20세기 초 복잡한 정치적·사회적 상황 속에서 등장한 문제들을 해결하기 위한 수단으로 이용된 우생학은 당시 수용되고 있던 과학이론들과 밀접한 연관이 있었다. 이 연구는 프랑스 우생학 운동의 특징적 성격이 어떻게 당시에 수용된 과학이론들과 밀접한 연결고리를 지니고 있었는지를 고찰한다. 프랑스 우생학의 과학적 토대는 다양한 기원과 과정을 보여준다. 드라푸쥬의 우생학을 뒷받침해준 골튼과 다윈주의 이론, 피나르를 비롯한 의사들이 주도한 의료우생학의 지지대로서의 신라마르크주의, 그리고 신맬더스주의의 네거티브 우생학의 토대가 되었던 멘델주의를 들 수 있다. 그 가운데서도 프랑스 우생학은 특히 신라마르크주의로 뒷받침된 사회위생학으로 상징된다. 하지만 프랑스 우생학이 라마르크주의의 영향과 출산장려 정책만으로 설명되지는 않는다. 우생학 운동의 모든 시기에 걸쳐 부적격자로 낙인된 자들을 제거해야한다는 주장도 지속적으로 제기되고 있었던 것이다. 프랑스 우생학적 실천을 지지하는 이론적 기반으로 작용했던 과학이론들은 프랑스 이외에도 많은 국가들에서 유사한 역할을 했다. 하지만 동일한 과학이론이 수용되고 응용되는 과정은 각 지역 마다의 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화적 맥락에 따라 다양한 스타일로 변형되어 차이를 드러낸다. Eugenics, an instrument for solving problems caused by complicated political and social circumstances during the end of the 19th Century to the early 20th century, was closely related with the accepted scientific theories of the period. This research analyses particularly the role of sciences for the French Eugenics movements. De Lapouge was particularly influenced by Darwinism and Biometrics of Francis Galton. Medical Eugenics led by medical doctors such as Adolph Pinard was largely impelled by Neo-Lamarckism. Neo-Malthusian negative eugenics was impelled by Mendelism. Among those scientific backgrounds, it has been particularly emphasized that French Eugenics movement was a kind of social hygienic movement of Lamarckian background, However, negative eugenics never disappeared in French eugenics movements. Furthermore, scientific theories supporting French eugenics movements were playing similarly important roles for the eugenics movements of the other countries. Yet those theories were deployed quite differently according to the political, cultural and economic backgrounds of the particular society.

        Distribution of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius in clinical cases of dogs

        Staphylococcus intermedius has been most common agent associated with dog diseases, such as pyoderma and otitis externa. Recently, S. schleiferi subsp. coagulans has been also detected in suppurative diseases of dog and the organism formerly known as S. intermedius is called as S intermedius group (SIG), consisting of S. intermedius, Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Staphylococcus delphini. From a clinical point of view, S. pseudintermedius is emerged as the most significant species of the SIG. A total of 72 SIG tested were positive for the presence of SInuc gene specific to S. intermedius and 67 (93.1%) isolates were S. pseudintermedius and only 5 (6.9%) S. intermedius, differentiating on the basis of arginine dyhydrolase production. None of the strains was identified as S. schleiferi subsp. coagulans. As results, S. pseudintermedius was found to be dominant in SIG from dogs in Jeju.

        Evidence for correlation between land use and PM10 hotspot explored by entropy weight

        According to recent studies on air pollution, air quality is deteriorating further because of PM10 arising from external factors such as yellow dust and vehicle exhaust gases flying from China and fossil fuel used for winter heating in China every yellow dust season, and internal factors such as traffic, industrial activities, etc. This has a bad effect on citizens’ healthy life by aggravating respiratory diseases and lowering pulmonary function. However, the location information about PM10 measurement currently provided by the Ministry of Environment is limited and insufficient to reflect the information of all areas. Thus, hotspot areas of PM10 concentration were derived by this study using spatial interpolation methods to estimate unmeasured points based on the measured data of urban air monitoring networks targeting Seoul city. As a result, high PM10 concentration was found centering largely on the southwestern area. Also, an analysis of the correlation with the areas by land use was conducted to identify the spatial characteristics of PM10 hotspot areas showing a spatial pattern of relatively high concentration. The result of the correlation analysis showed that there existed a positive correlation between industrial and residential areas and PM10 hotspot areas. This means that air pollution level varies according to spatial characteristics and that there exist areas to be preferentially managed according to land use status. This seems to be a ground to provide air pollution information by land use status at the time of policy decision making by region for urban planning and development.

        Structural Distributions of Numeral Expressions in Korean

        In this paper, we aim to analyze the structural distribution of three types of numeral expressions in Korean. The first type is bare numerals, the second is numerals combined with a classifier and -uy, (i.e. Num-CL-uy), and the third is numerals with a classifier (i.e. Num-CL) in post-nominal position. We show that the bare numeral serves as a boundary between low and high modifiers (NP vs. FP modifiers); that is, it is placed right above NP modifiers and below FP modifiers that are affixed with the relative clause marker -n. Following Hong (2010) and An (2014), we argue that -uy in the Num-CL-uy form is a marker of FP modifiers as it can alternate with other FP modifiers in linear order. Finally, we attempt to derive post-nominal Num-CL without the uy marker and argue that the Num-CL form is derived by NP movement to SpecFP.

        On the Concavity of the Sum-Rate Function in OFDM Systems

        <P>We study the power allocation problem for maximizing the sum rate in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems, where multiple point-to-point links share a set of subcarriers. This problem is hard to solve, in general, due to its nonconvexity. In this letter, we characterize the conditions for the problem to be convex, in which case the problem can be solved efficiently using known algorithms such as gradient projection method. We validate our analysis through simulations.</P>

        Mechanistic insights into differential requirement of receptor dimerization for oncogenic activation of mutant EGFR and its clinical perspective

        The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a member of the ErbB family (EGFR, ErbB2, ErbB3 and ErbB4), plays a crucial role in regulating various cellular responses such as proliferation, differentiation, and survival. As a result, aberrant activation of EGFR, mostly mediated through different classes of genomic alterations occurring within EGFR, is closely associated with the pathogenesis of numerous human cancers including lung adenocarcinoma, glioblastoma, and colorectal cancer. Thus, specific suppression of oncogenic activity of mutant EGFR with its targeted drugs has been routinely used in the clinic as a very effective anti-cancer strategy in treating a subset of tumors driven by such oncogenic EGFR mutants. However, the clinical efficacy of EGFR-targeted therapy does not last long due to several resistance mechanisms that emerge in the patients following the drug treatment. Thus, there is an urgent need for the development of novel therapeutic tactics specifically targeting mutant EGFR with the focus on the unique biological features of various mutant EGFR. Regarding this point, our review specifically emphasizes the recent findings about distinct requirements of receptor dimerization and autophosphorylation, which are critical steps for enzymatic activation of EGFR and signaling cascades, respectively, among wildtype and mutant EGFR and further discuss their clinical significance. In addition, the molecular mechanisms regulating EGFR dimerization and enzymatic activity by a key negative feedback inhibitor Mig6 as well as the clinical use for developing potential novel drugs targeting it are described in this review.         Comparison of Emulsion-stabilizing Property between Sodium Caseinate and Whey Protein Concentrate

        The stability of corn oil-in-water emulsions coated by milk proteins, sodium caseinate (CAS), or whey protein concentrate (WPC), was compared under the environmental stress of pH change. Emulsions were prepared at 0.1 of protein:oil because the majority of droplets were relatively small (d₃₂=0.34 and 0.35 ㎛, d₄₃=0.65 and 0.37 ㎛ for CAS- and WPCemulsions, respectively) and there was no evidence of depletion flocculation. As the pH of the emulsions was gradually dropped from 7 to 3, there was no significant difference in the electrical charges of the emulsion droplets between the 2 types of emulsions. However, laser diffraction measurements, microscopy measurements, and creaming stability test indicated that WPC-emulsions were more stable to droplet aggregation than CAS-emulsions under the same circumstance of pH change. It implies that factors other than electrostatic repulsion should contribute to the different magnitude of response to pH change.

      • Influence Maximized MCL based RSU Deployment

        RSUs (Road Side Units) that can support seamless communications between vehicles on VANET environment are usually installed in the intersections. However, it cannot be installed on whole intersection because of installation costs. Therefore, it is essential to allocate RSUs on important positions. In this paper, we find RSU candidates by clustering intersections based on the connectivity of them by using influence maximized MCL algorithm, and then finally identify RSU allocation locations according to the size of cluster and the RSU priorities. In our experiment, we showed that our approach had outstanding performance compared to K-Means-based algorithm.
