<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>The effects of skeletal muscle mass on depressive symptoms remain poorly understood, especially in the middle-aged population. We examined the relationship between skeletal muscle mass and depressive symptoms according to sex and menopausal status in the middle-aged Korean population.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>Herein, 1,151 men and 2,176 women aged 30–64 years completed questionnaires and underwent health examinations in the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease Etiology Research Center study. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) was measured via bioelectrical impedance analysis and adjusted for height squared (ASM/Ht2). Both continuous values and tertile groups of ASM/Ht2 were used for analysis. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Beck Depressive Inventory-II (BDI), and the prevalence of depressive symptoms was determined as a BDI score ≥ 20.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>Multiple logistic regression analysis using a fully adjusted model showed that depressive symptoms were more frequently observed among men in the lower ASM/Ht2 tertile and middle ASM/Ht2 tertile than among those in the higher ASM/Ht2 tertile. Each 1-kg/m2 decrease in ASM/Ht2 was significantly associated with the presence of depressive symptoms in men. Such significant association was not observed among premenopausal and postmenopausal women.</P> <P><B>Limitations</B></P> <P>The cross-sectional nature of the study design, measurement of skeletal muscle mass and depressive symptoms only once, estimation of skeletal muscle mass using bioelectrical impedance analysis, assessing depressive symptoms by self-reported questionnaire, and potential unknown confounding variables constitute the limitations of our study.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>The independent association between low skeletal muscle mass and depressive symptoms was observed in men but not in women.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Depressive symptoms were predominant in men in lower and middle ASM/Ht2 tertiles. </LI> <LI> An association between ASM/Ht2 and depressive symptoms was not observed in women. </LI> <LI> Maintenance of appropriate skeletal muscle mass may decrease the risk of depressive symptoms in middle-aged Korean men. </LI> </UL> </P>

Chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflourm Kitamura) is a member of the Asteraceae and one of the important horticultural crops. The objective of this study was to construct a DNA profile database for identification of chrysanthemum varieties using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. In order to select SSR markers for the variety identification, we screened 587 SSR primers using 20 varieties. Among them, 27 SSR markers showed polymorphism. We finally selected 14 SSR markers showing peak clearance, high polymorphism and reproducibility in 20 varieties. In conclusion, DNA profile database for 147 chrysanthemum varieties were constructed by 14 SSR markers. A total of 79 SSR alleles were detected and three to ten alleles were detected with an average of 5.6 alleles per locus. The polymorphism information content value ranged 0.287 ~ 0.785 with an average of 0.598. Genetic relationship revealed that genetic distance of 147 varieties ranged from 0.44 to 1.00. The 143 varieties among 147 varieties were distinguished by 14 SSR markers but the 2 varieties developed by mutation breeding and natural variation were not distinguished from original varieties. These constructed SSR profile database will be useful for the selection of similar varieties for candidate variety and for solving problem relating to seed dispute and infringement of plant breeder’s right.
Mechanism for Selective Growth in Electrical Steel
Eun Jee Oh,Nam Hoe Heo,Se Kyun Kwon,Yang Mo Koo 대한금속·재료학회 2018 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.24 No.1
Through the competitive selective growth process between {100}, {110}, and {111} grains during final annealingwhich is governed by the primary grain size and the surface segregation concentration of sulfur, the sharp{110}<001> annealing texture can be developed in a C- and Al-free Fe-3%Si-0.1%Mn electrical steel. Generally, the selective growth of the {110} grains occurs actively under the low surface segregation concentration of sulfur. In spite of the surface energy disadvantage, the selective growth of a {hkl} grain can however occur, if the {hkl}grain size is larger than the critical grain size linearly proportional to the strip thickness.
Effect of pair-housing for Laboratory cynomolgus monkeys 2: Changes in hematological parameters
( Jee Eun Kim ),( Su Cheol Han ),( Pill Soo Lee ),( Jeong Doo Heo ),( Choong Yong Kim ) 한국동물실험대체법학회 2007 한국동물실험대체법학회 학술대회집 Vol.2007 No.1
The effect of the social enrichment program using mingle cages was investigated in hematological parameters of male cynomolgus monkeys. It is generally believed that the social enrichment program using mingle cages may offer the socialization and the prevention of isolation syndrome such as abnormal behavior. The total of 48 males and 42 females were housed in pairs homosexually with mingle cages reformed from individual cages for 9 weeks and we observed the clinical signs, body weight changes and hematological parameters. In the previous study, Han et al.,2007 observed clinical signs and body weight changes. 93.8 % of male cage mates and 100% of female cage mates were made successful pair-housing formation except 3 cases of male cage mates with serious injuries from fighting. And body weight gains were not changed between individual cage-housing and pair-housing for 9 weeks. However WBC count of male monkeys in individual cage was decreased compared with pair housing group after 8 and 21 weeks from pair housing. Significant increase in neutrophils and decrease in lymphocytes were observed in pair housing group. Thus, this finding indicate that housing condition may change hematological parameters. The present finding may serve as useful basic data for social enrichment program using mingle cage.
Large-scale assembly of highly flexible low-noise devices based on silicon nanowires

<P>Recently, integrated flexible devices based on silicon nanowires (Si-NWs) have received significant attention as high performance flexible devices. However, most previous assembly methods can generate only specifically-shaped devices and require unconventional facilities, which has been a major hurdle for industrial applications. Herein, we report a simple but very efficient method for assembling Si-NWs into virtually generally-shape patterns on flexible substrates using only conventional microfabrication facilities, allowing us to mass-produce highly flexible low-noise devices. As proof of this method, we demonstrated the fabrication of highly bendable top-gate transistors based on Si-NWs. These devices showed typical n-type semiconductor behaviors, and exhibited a much lower noise level compared to previous flexible devices based on organic conductors or other nanowires. In addition, the gating behaviors and low-noise characteristics of our devices were maintained, even under highly bent conditions. </P>
