This study was conducted to determine the supplemental effects of two insect meals, mealworm (MW) and black soldier fly (BSF), with high or low lipid levels in diets, on Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Sardine and tuna by-product meals were used as the fish meal source in a control (Con) diet. The fish meals were replaced with MW, defatted MW (deMW), BSF or defatted BSF (deBSF), respectively. The shrimp (body weight: 0.47 g) were stocked into 20 acryl tanks (215 L) and fed the diets six times a day. After 45 days of the feeding trial, the shrimp that were fed insect meals had significantly higher phenoloxidase and superoxide dismutase activities than the shrimp fed Con diet. The gene expressions of prophenoloxidase, crustin and penaeidine-3c in shrimp hepatopancrease were also higher in shrimp that were fed the insect diets, regardless of defatting than those in shirmp that were fed Con diet. The survival against Vibrio parahaemolyticus was higher in shrimp that were fed the diets containing defatted insect meals than in shrimp that were fed Con diet. These results indicate that MW and BSF, regardless of lipid levels, could be good protein sources for the enhancement of innate immunity and anti-oxidant capacity of the shrimp.

This study is designed to solve the problem of a person suffering from paralysis of the whole body due to muscle diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Full-body paralysis patients cannot move or speak because of muscular dystrophy and weakness. Eye movement is considered in the study to communicate with other people because they could move their eyes. Arduino is used to implement the eye-motion communication system. The system is composed with eye-keyboard, glasses with QTR sensor and laser pointer-receiver which are attached to eye glasses. When the laser pointer is aiming some letter on a eye-keybard, the QTR sensor is used to recognize the movement of the eyeball so that the letter is inputted and the word is printed on the monitor. Along with that, eye-motion is displayed on the Neopixel LED matrix so that we can communicate from a long distance. The test results showed that it took an average of 8.2 seconds to enter a word of 4 characters, and an average of 43.6 seconds to make a sentence of 4 words for a novice. This design shows the actual implementation potential of the eye-keyboard.
Au nanozyme-driven antioxidation for preventing frailty

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>From senescence and frailty that may result from various biological, mechanical, nutritional, and metabolic processes, the human body has its own antioxidant defense enzymes to remove by-products of oxygen metabolism, and if unregulated, can cause several types of cell damage. Herein, an antioxidant, artificial nanoscale enzyme, called nanozyme (NZs), is introduced that is composed of Au nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized with a mixture of two representative phytochemicals, namely, gallic acid (GA) and isoflavone (IF), referred to as GI-Au NZs. Their unique antioxidant and anti-aging effects are monitored using Cell Counting Kit-8 and senescence-associated β-galactosidase assays on neonatal human dermal fibroblasts (nHDFs). Furthermore, alterations in epidermal thickness and SOD activity are measured under ultraviolet light to investigate the effects of the topical application of NZs on the histological structure and antioxidant activity in hairless mice skin. Then, hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity in the hairless mice are monitored. It is concluded that the NZs can effectively prevent serial passage-induced senescence in nHDFs, as well as oxidative stress in mice skin, suggesting a range of strategies to further develop novel therapeutics for acute frailty.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> <I>In vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I> antioxidant effects of Phyto-Au NZs are shown to deter frailty. </LI> <LI> Phyto-Au NZs showed enhanced catalytic activity. </LI> <LI> Cytoprotective effects against serial passage and H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-induced senescence were shown. </LI> <LI> Phyto-Au NZs caused a decrease in epidermal thickness and an increase in SOD activity. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
소유역별 첨두유량 기여율을 고려한 홍수지수 산정 및 홍수위험 분석

홍수피해는 일반적으로 주수로 상의 하도를 따라 집중하여 발생한다. 홍수관리 최적 대안을 선정하기 위해서는 피해가 발생하는 하도뿐만이 아니라 하류 말단지점의 첨두유량에 영향을 미치는 개별 소유역의 기여율을 고려해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 하류 말단지점의 첨두유량에 대한 개별 소유역의 기여율 산정을 위한 반복적인 모의 기법을 개발하고 이를 기반으로 하는 홍수지수를 제안하였다. 홍수 지수는 유출해석 모형에서 임의 소유역을 제외하였을 경우 첨두유량에 대한 해당 소유역의 기여율과 단위면적당 기여율을 의미한다. 수영강을 20개 소유역으로 구분하고 Hec-HMS 모형을 구축하였으며 설계빈도에 해당하는 임계지속시간 24시간 100년 빈도 강우를 적용하여 기여율을 기반으로 하는 홍수지수를 산정하였다. 기여율을 기반으로 하는 홍수지수는 유역의 유출특성을 지배하는 유역면적, 유역경사, 하천경사, 불투수율 등에 대한 종합적인 영향을 포함하고 있는 것으로 검토되었다.
