Benign neural sheath neoplasms are not common in the maxillofacial region. These lesions can occur as solitary tumors, or they can affect many sites in the form of multiple neurofibromatosis. A solitary neurofibroma is seldom undergo sarcomatous transformation, since solitary neurofibroma is relatively radioresistant and its recurrence rate seems to be low, the treatment of choice is surgical excision. This case showed a solitary neurofibroma in the left side of the floor of mouth which occurred in a 33 - year -old female. The tumor was excised. And there is no evidence of disease. She is satisfied in function and esthetic aspect.
수술중 기계적 환기시 HME (Heat and Moisture Exchanger)가 기도저항에 미치는 영향

To compare the airway resistance effects of two heat and moisture exchangers(HME) during short-term intraoperative volume controlled mechanical ventilation. Following a randomized order, the patients were ventilated during 3hrs with two HMEs(Pall conserve and Humi-vent filter). In each patient and for each 5 min, lhr, 2hrs and 3 hrs period, body temperature and airway resistance were measured. The hydrophobic HME (Pall conserve) had a good theraml conservation capacity, but increase airway resistance(11.7±2.9cm H_2O/1/s to 15 4±3.4 after lhr, to 17.3±2.5 after 2hrs, to 17.5±3.3cm H_2O/l/s after 3hrs). The hygroscopic filter(Humi-vent filter) had a good thermal conservation capacity, and less increase airway restance than Pall conserve(13.0±2.3 to 15. 4±3.4. after 1hr, 15.9±2.5 after 2hrs, 15.0±3.3 cmH2O/I/s after 3hrs). The hygroscopic HME had a thermal and humidification capacity and less increase the airway resistance.

Atherosclerosis is considered as a chronic inflammatory process. However, the nature of the oxidant signaling that regulates monocyte adhesion and its underlying mechanism is poorly understood. We investigated the role of reactive oxygen species on the vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and monocyte adhesion in the cultured endothelial cells. $TNF-{\alpha}$ at a range of $1{\sim}30\;ng/ml$ induced VCAM-1 expression dose-dependently. BCECF-AM-labeled U937 cells firmly adhered on the surface of endothelial cells when the endothelial cells were incubated with $TNF-{\alpha}$ (15 ng/ml). Ten $\;{\mu}mol/L$ of SB203580, an inhibitor of p38 MAPK, significantly reduced $TNF-{\alpha}-induced$ VCAM-1 expression, compared to the JNK inhibitor ($40\;{\mu}mol/L$ of SP60015) or ERK inhibitor ($40\;{\mu}mol/L$ of U0126). Also, SB203580 significantly inhibited $TNF-{\alpha}-induced$ monocyte adhesion in HUVEC. Superoxide production was minimal in the basal condition, however, treatment of $TNF-{\alpha}$ induced superoxide production in the dihydroethidineloaded endothelial cells. Diphenyleneiodonium (DPI, $10\;{\mu}mol/L$), an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase, and rotenone $(1\;{\mu}mol/L)$, an inhibitor of mitochondrial complex I inhibited $TNF-{\alpha}-induced$ superoxide production, VCAM-1 expression and monocyte adhesion in the endothelial cells. Taken together, our data suggest that NADPH oxidase and mitochondrial ROS were involved in $TNF-{\alpha}-induced$ VCAM-1 and monocyte adhesion in the endothelial cells.
Ocular setariasis by Setaria digitata in a horse in Korea

A three-year-old male Thoroughbred horse with corneal opacity in his left eye was donated to Chonbuk National University for anatomical study. Upon gross observation, two whitish parasites were moving swiftly within the vitreous chamber of the eyeball. The worms obtained from the eye after anatomical dissection were identified as Setaria digitata by morphological observation with light and scanning electron microscopes; one male (43 mm in length) and one female (55 mm) were found. This aberrant ocular infection by S. digitata is the first case reported in horses in Korea.

최근 비디오내시경의 발달로 비디오흉강수술은 자연기흉의 치료에 새로운 방법으로 발전되었고, 일반적으로 개흉술에 견줄만큼 안전하고 좋은 임상결과를 보이고 있다. 저자들은 자연성기흉의 치료에 있어 비디오흉강경으로 수술을 시행한 환자들과 정중액와 개흉술에 의해 수술한 환자들을 대상으로 그 임상적 결과를 비교하였다. 대상환자들은 1995년 2월부터 1997년 8월까지 일차성자연기흉으로 기포의 쐐기절제술 및 늑막유착술을 시행한 환자로서 비디오흉강경수술을 시행한 환자 37명과 정중액와개흉술에 의한 환자 30명을 대상으로 하여 두군간의 수술적응증, 수술시간(피부절개에서 피부봉합까지), 술후 진통제투여일수, 술후 흉관삽입기간, 술후 재원기간, 술후 합병증 및 술후 재발의 수를 비교하였다. 대상환자들의 추적기간은 8개월에서 38개월이었다. 수술은 1군(비디오흉강경수술) 37명에서 42례의수술(양측 5례), 2군(정중액와 개흉술) 30명에서 39례의 수술(양측 9례)을 시행하였다. 수술방법은 2례(1군)를 제외하고 모두 기포절제술 및 늑막의 기계적유착술을 시행하였다. 환자의 연령, 성별, 수술적응증은 두군간에 큰 차이가 없었다. 수술적응증은 재발이 35례, 지속적인 공기누출이 8례, 반대측에 기흉이 있었던 경우 6례, 흉부 X-ray상에 기포가 존재한 경우 15례, 양측성 3례로 두 군간의 큰차이가 없었다. 술후 진통제 사용일수, 수술후 흉관 삽입기간, 술후 재원일수는 흉강경 수술군에서 유의하게 낮았으나, 술후 재발율은 흉강경수술군에서 약간 높았다. 비비디오 흉강경 수술은 수술후 빠른 회복, 술후 재원 기간의 감소, 통증의 감소 및 미용상의 문제 등으로 자연기흉의 치료에 있어 개흉술보다 많은 장점이 있으나 재발율의 증가가 해결되어야 할 문제이다. 이는 장기적으로 외과의의 경험의 축적과 적극적인 늑막유착술의 병행으로 개흉술에 견줄만한 결과를 보이리라 생각된다.

Photosensitive Full-Swing Multi-Layer MoS<sub>2</sub> Inverters With Light Shielding Layers

<P>Multi-layeredMoS(2) inverters with light shielding layers were fabricated and demonstrated for application in highly sensitive photodetectors, exploiting the particular advantages of an atomically thin layer and a sizable electrical bandgap. The photoleakage behaviors of the inverters under changing wavelengths of light were experimentally demonstrated to occur in a controlledmanner andwere analytically validated by load-line analysis. When the inverters were operated with a depletion load in the light of blue light emitting diodes, the low noise margin and transition width were significantly enhanced, by approximately 20% and 220%, respectively, as compared with those of the inverters in the dark.</P>
ATP Measurement Predicts Porcine Islet Transplantation Outcome in Nude Mice

Current nude mice islet transplantation studies cannot be used prospectively. Therefore, to predict transplantation outcomes, reliable and rapid assays for islet quality assessment are warranted. This study evaluated the predictive power of the porcine islet ATP content on the outcomes of islet transplantation in nude mice. Here, we report that the ATP measurement using a small number of handpicked islets with a diameter of 100 to 150 μm is a good predictor of islet graft efficacy in nude mice. Using receiver-operator characteristic analysis, the area under the curve of the ATP content using a small number of handpicked islets was 0.867 (95% confidence interval 0.744–0.989, P<0.001). The sensitivity and the specificity measured were 83.3% and 73.3%, respectively. In conclusion, a simple and a rapid measurement of intraislet ATP content could be a promising substitute for current nude mice islet transplantation studies.
