Bacillus thuringiensis NTB-1 isolated from soil samples in Korea produces ovoidal parasporal inclusions with proteins of approximately 24-40kDa in size. Although serological study indicated that the isolate has a flagella (H) antigen identical with subsp. israelensis, it seemed to be non-insecticidal against Lepidoptera and Coleoptera as well as Diptera. To investigate the activity of non-insecticidal B.thuringiensis transformed with insecticidal crystal protein genes, cryIVD and cytA genes of B. thuringiensis subsp. morrisoni PG-14, highly toxic to mosquito larvae, were introduced into the isolate NTB-1. The expression of mosquitocidal crystal protein genes in NTB-1 was characterized by SDS-PAGE analysis and electron microscopy. The results showed that crystalline inclusions of host, CryIVD and CytA were stably expressed in the transformant. However, the mosquitocidal activity of transformant was similar to that of B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki Cry-B harbouring cryIVD and cytA genes, demonstrating that a synergistic effect by an interaction of both introduced insecticidal and resident non-insecticidal crystal proteins was not observed.

High performance solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) based on gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) electrolyte are demonstrated for intermediate temperature operation. The inherent technical limitations of the GDC electrolyte in sinterability and mechanical properties are overcome by applying sol-gel coating technique to the screen-printed film. When the quality of the electrolyte film is enhanced by the additional sol-gel coating, the OCV and maximum power density increase from 0.73 to 0.90 V and from 0.55 to 0.95 W cm<SUP>-2</SUP>, respectively, at 650 <SUP>o</SUP>C with humidified hydrogen (3% H<SUB>2</SUB>O) as fuel and air as oxidant. The impedance analysis reveals that the reinforcement of the thin electrolyte with sol-gel coating significantly reduces the polarization resistance. Elementary reaction steps for the anode and cathode are analyzed based on the systematic impedance study, and the relation between the structural integrity of the electrolyte and the electrode polarization is discussed in detail.
Increased cell-free DNA concentrations in patients with obstructive sleep apnea

<P>Aim: </P><P>Blood concentrations of cell-free DNA, which is considered to be released during apoptosis, are elevated under some pathological conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. The association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cell-free DNA concentrations has not been reported so far. The purpose of the present study was to examine the association between OSA and plasma DNA concentrations.</P><P>Methods: </P><P>A case–control study was conducted using a total of 164 men aged 39–67 years, who were free of coronary heart disease and cancer. Laboratory-based overnight polysomnography was performed for all participants.</P><P>Results: </P><P>On the basis of polysomnography, patients with an apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) = 5–30 events/h were defined as having mild–moderate OSA (<I>n</I> = 33) and those with >30 events/h were defined as having severe OSA (<I>n</I> = 49). All 82 controls had AHI < 5 events/h. Plasma DNA concentrations from all participants were analyzed for the &bgr;-globin gene using fluorescence-based real-time polymerase chain reaction. Patients with severe OSA had significantly higher plasma DNA concentrations than persons with mild–moderate OSA and those without OSA (<I>P</I> < 0.05). AHI was significantly associated with body mass index (<I>P</I> < 0.001), hypertension (<I>P</I> < 0.001), and plasma DNA concentration (<I>P</I> < 0.05).</P><P>Conclusion: </P><P>After taking into account hypertension and other potential risk factors, persons with high plasma DNA concentrations (>8 µg/L) had approximately fourfold higher odds of OSA than those with low DNA levels. Further data are warranted to confirm the association for men and to evaluate the association for women.</P>

The machining method by using end-milling tool has been applying in machining structures of various shapes because of the availability. Recently, all kinds of industries based on the parts of micro shape are developing, and the demands of mechanical micro machining technology are increasing suddenly to produce these parts. According to such changes, the technology of the micro end-milling machining is applying as one of the most important machining means. This research is to aim at developing machining technology for various micro structures using micro end-mill. This paper introduces micro mechanical machining system with ultra precision, and demonstrates methods manufacturing all sorts of parts and moldings for industry and examples of applicable machining by using micro end-milling tool of micro sizes from hundreds to tens in diameter.

본 연구에서는 건전시 뿐만 아니라 좌초 및 충돌후의 선각거더에 대한 안전성 평가지침을 제시하였다. 좌초 및 충돌에 의한 구조손상의 범위와 위치는 미국선급협회 (ABS)에서 제시하고 있는 지침을 바탕으로 정의한다. 선각에 작용하는 극한 종굽힘모멘트의 계산은 선급협회에서 제시하고 있는 설계하중식 또는 간이 직접법을 이용하며. 선각의 최종강도는 해석적인 방법으로 도출한 간이추정식을 적용하여 계산한다. 최종강도치와 최대 작용하중이 얻으지면 이들을 비교하여 선각의 붕괴 가능성을 평가하게 된다. 본 지침의 유용성을 검토하기 위하여 15만톤급 살물운반선에 대해 건전상태와 자초 및 충돌상태에 대한 안전성 평가예를 보인다. In this study, a guide for assessing residual strength of ships after groundlings and collisions is described. Location and extent of structural damages due to grounding/collision which have been defined by American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) are introduced. The extreme vertical bending moment applied in the ship hull is estimated from the rules of classification societies and/or a simplified direct method. The ultimate hull strength is calculated by using analytical simple formula. If the ultimate hull strength is greater than the applied loads then it will be said that the hull is safe. Otherwise it will possibly collapse. As an illustrative example, a bulk carrier of 150,000 dwt in groundings and collisions as well as intact condition is analyzed.
