Kimchi refrigerator is a specific refrigerator for Kimchi, Korean traditional fermented dish. It has been fast popularized since it was developed about ten years ago. In this study, a survey was conducted with 103 female voluntary respondents to understand the customer satisfaction of the Kimchi refrigerator in the aspect of physical usability. The respondents showed a high satisfaction for the use of the refrigerator. It was, however, shown that they felt highly uncomfortable in using the refrigerator. In particular, the high discomfort is related to the fact that the customer should bend his/her torso very much to put Kimchi cases into the refrigerator, take them out of it, or clean its inside. Seventy-five percent of the respondents reported the experience of body-part pains and 58.4% of them reported pain experience in the back. It is presumed that these results are highly correlated to the top-cover design of the refrigerator, which is the popular style to improve its performance of maintaining the temperature properly. Therefore, the developers should consider these physical usability problems related to the refrigerator and try to enhance its usability.
FlexRay Network Parameter Optimization Method for Automotive Applications

<P>This paper describes a new FlexRay network parameter optimization (NPO) method consisting of two straightforward steps: design the lengths of the static (ST) slot and the communication cycle. In the first step, we formulate an optimal problem for designing the ST slot length. The bandwidth limitation, composed of protocol overhead and unused network resources, is considered as optimal criterion for efficient network usage. With the exploration of design space (i.e., ST slot lengths which satisfy the constraints of the FlexRay specifications), the optimal ST slot length is determined. Based on the result of the first step, the optimal communication-cycle length is designed in the next step. In this step, we proposed an algorithm for analyzing the worst case response times (WCRTs) for the ST and dynamic frames. Using this algorithm, the optimal communication-cycle length with minimum network delays is derived. The NPO method formalizes the FlexRay network configuration process in two steps for simplicity. Furthermore, the method enables the efficient usage of FlexRay bus with minimum WCRT. Finally, vehicle chassis control system based on FlexRay network is designed using the proposed NPO method. In this example system, we verified the parameter-optimization algorithm, and analysis results are confirmed.</P>

<P>This paper describes robust multi-input, multi-output controller for the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) systems of passenger car diesel engines. The air-to-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas and boost pressure of the intake manifold were selected as performance indicators in this paper. To enable the online calibration of the controller, proportional-integral-derivative (PID) was used as a feedback controller. Using quantitative feedback theory (QFT), two control loops for air-to-fuel ratio and boost pressure were independently designed with linearized models and parameter uncertainties. The prefilters and PID gains of two control loops were designed for satisfying required robust stability and tracking performance using the QFT design framework. Furthermore, the problems originated from the cross-coupled dynamics between the EGR and VGT systems were mitigated by a static decoupler. Using the proposed design steps, PID and decoupler gains of the representative 15 engine operating points which are mainly used in New European Driving Cycle were obtained. The proposed controller was validated through various test conditions of engine experiments. From the step responses and transient experiments, it was demonstrated that the required robustness and tracking performance were successfully achieved.</P>
A study on a design of distributed control systems based on a FlexRay network

A deterministic and fault-tolerant communication system is required for the implementation of safety critical applications such as x-by-wire systems. FlexRay protocol which supports a time-triggered scheme is presented as a next generation network protocol for high speed communication systems in the automotive industry. In time-triggered protocols such as FlexRay, the time schedule is a dominant part of the protocol operation. The time schedule of a FlexRay cluster is determined by the network configuration which is defined by the protocol specification. We suggest the development process for FlexRay-based control systems. The proposed development process provides a guideline for the network configuration of FlexRay. For the feasibility test, the suggested design process was applied to the design of an electronic stability control(ESC) system.

This paper investigates the design of model-based feedforward compensators for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) systems using air path models for a common-rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engine to cope with the nonlinear control problem. The model-based feedforward compensators generate set-positions of the EGR valve and the VGT vane to track the desired mass air flow (MAF) and manifold absolute pressure (MAP) with consideration of the current engine operating conditions. In the best case, the rising time to reach 90% of the MAF set-point was reduced by 69.8% compared with the look-up table based feedforward compensators.
