        Changes in Serum Biochemical Markers of Bone Cell Activity in Growing Thoroughbred Horses

        We studied the changes in biochemical markers of bone metabolism in growing Thoroughbred horses. Serum osteocalcin (OC), as a marker for bone formation, and carboxy-terminal propeptide of type-I collagen (PICP), as a marker for bone formation, carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type-I collagen (ICTP), as a marker for bone resorption, were determined in nine clinically healthy horses from 3 d to 17 mo of age. The BW and withers height (WH) increased during the study. On the other hand, a rapid reduction in body weight gain (BWG) was observed between 1 mo and 9 mo of age and a rapid reduction in withers height gain was observed between 1 mo and 5 mo of age. The serum markers decreased significantly with increasing age. In particular, dramatic changes in serum markers occurred between 3 d to 1 wk and 5 to 7 mo of age in these horses, which suggests that bone turnover rapidly decreased after birth. On the other hand, the ratio of PICP to ICTP decreased through the experiment. This result suggests that the reduction in bone formation exceeded that of bone resorption. There was a significant correlation between markers and growth parameters, except for the correlation between PICP and BWG on single linear regression analysis. Serum OC and ICTP were affected by the WH in multiple linear regression analysis. These results indicated that the age-related variation in serum biochemical markers of bone metabolism reflected bone growth, but neither BW nor BWG. Therefore, we consider that changes in bone modeling are the major factor affecting the levels of serum biochemical markers by 17 mo of age in horses.

        Macro- and Microscopic Simulation of Materio-Thermo-Mechanical Fields

        Two kinds of computer simulation are made for some engineering processes incorporating phase transformation. One is the macroscopic or continuum mechanics approach based on the theory of metallo-thermomechanics developed byt eh authors, and the other is the microscopic, or atomic ledvel simulation by use of molecular dynamics. In each case, emphasis is focussed on the effect of coupling among material structures, temperature and stress/strain during in-solid or liquid-solid phase transformations. Some illustrative examples are presented.

        Color Compensation of an Underwater Imaging System Using Electromagnetic Wave Propagation

        Images can be obtained by collecting rays from objects. The characteristics of electromagnetic wave propagation depend on the medium. In particular, in an underwater imaging system, the interface between air and water must be considered. Further, reflection and transmission coefficients can be found by using electromagnetic theory. Because of the fact that the values of these coefficients differ according to the media, the recorded light intensities will change. A color image sensor has three different color channels. Therefore, the reflection and transmission coefficients have to be calculated individually. Thereafter, by using these coefficients, we can compensate for the color information of underwater objects. In this paper, we present a method to compensate for the color information of underwater objects by using electromagnetic wave propagation theory. To prove our method, we conducted optical experiments and evaluated the quality of the compensated image by a metric known as mean square error.

        DEVELOPMENT OF PYROPROCESSING AND ITS FUTURE DIRECTION

        Pyroprocessing is the optimal means of treating spent metal fuels from metal fast fuel reactors and is proposed as a potential option for GNEP in order to meet the requirements of the next generation fuel cycle. Currently, efforts for research and development are being made not only in the U.S., but also in Asian countries. Electrorefining, cathode processing by distillation, injection casting for fuel fabrication, and waste treatment must be verified by the use of genuine materials, and the engineering scale model of each device must be developed for commercial deployment. Pyroprocessing can be effectively extended to treat oxide fuels by applying an electrochemical reduction, for which various kinds of oxides are examined. A typical morphology change was observed following the electrochemical reduction, while the product composition was estimated through the process flow diagram. The products include much stronger radiation emitter than pure typical LWR Pu or weapon-grade Pu. Nevertheless, institutional measures are unavoidable to ensure proliferation-proof plant operations. The safeguard concept of a pyroprocessing plant was compared with that of a PUREX plant. The pyroprocessing is better adapted for a collocation system positioned with some reactors and a single processing facility rather than for a centralized reprocessing unit with a large scale throughput.

        Analgesic Effects of Toad Cake and Toad-cake-containing Herbal Drugs -Analgesic effects of toad cake-

        Objectives: This study was conducted to clarify the analgesic effect of toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs. Methods: We counted the writhing response of mice after the intraperitoneal administration of acetic acid as a nociceptive pain model and the withdrawal response after the plantar surface stimulation of the hind paw induced by partial sciatic nerve ligation of the mice as a neuropathic pain model to investigate the analgesic effect of toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs. A co-treatment study with serotonin biosynthesis inhibitory drug 4-chloro-DL-phenylalanine methyl ester hydrochloride (PCPA), the catecholamine biosynthesis inhibitory drug ${\alpha}$-methyl-DL-tyrosine methyl ester hydrochloride (AMPT) or the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone hydrochloride was also conducted. Results: Analgesic effects in a mouse model of nociceptive pain and neuropathic pain were shown by oral administration of toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs. The effects of toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs disappeared upon co-treatment with PCPA, but not with AMPT or naloxone in the nociceptive pain model; the analgesic effect of toad-cake-containing herbal drugs also disappeared upon co-treatment with PCPA in the neuropathic pain model. Conclusion: Toad cake and toad-cake-containing herbal drugs have potential for the treatments of nociceptive pain and of neuropathic pain, such as post-herpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, diabetic neuralgia, and postoperative or posttraumatic pain, by activation of the central serotonin nervous system.

        Forestry Education Support by a Forest Research Institute: Development of Forestry Educational Programs for Vocational High Schools

        Forestry education in vocational high schools is one of the fundamental keys for achieving sustainable forest management. However, support systems for forestry education have not been well developed in Japan. Forest research institutes, which have accumulated relevant information, should have sufficient ability to develop new educational programs in this field. This study examined the possibility of support systems for forestry technical education by a research institute. Educational programs for vocational high schools were developed, and the programs were examined for their practical applications through a workshop for these teachers. We set the following five requirements for the programs: They should 1) incorporate new contents related to sustainable forest management, 2) be based on forestry education textbooks, 3) meet recent demands of the schools and society, 4) allow participants to learn through actual practice and experience, and 5) utilize readily available teaching materials. With these criteria, we developed the following two educational programs: (a) Forest management program to teach advanced techniques, (b) A timber-program to teach about biomass resources. The workshop was held on July $28^{th}$, 2007 with ten teachers attending. The programs were very interesting, who gave them high average evaluation of 4.6 on a scale of 1 to 5. Only a few issues need to be resolved before classroom instruction can begin, such as making wood structure easier to understanding for some teachers, and obtaining base maps of school forests. In conclusion, forest research institutes can effectively support forestry education by providing and implementing programs based on scientific information.

        Oxidative and Anti-oxidative Status in Blood of Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Piglets

        Eight LW${\times}$D crossbred, castrated weanling piglets were used to examine the effect of hyperglycemia by streptozotocin (STZ)-injection on oxidative and anti-oxidative status in circulating fluid. Every two of the eight piglets were intravenously administrated STZ at a dose of 0 (control), 100, 125 or 150 mg/kg BW, respectively, and on 15th day after the STZ-injection, some markers of the oxidative stress in circulating fluid were measured to evaluate oxidative and anti-oxidative status in the piglets. First, piglets with hyperglycemia were selected from the STZ-injected piglets as measured by the levels of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) during 2 weeks after the STZ-injection. Additionally, data obtained from the intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) on 14th day were analyzed. Secondly, the data obtained in this experiment were divided into the control group and the hyperglycemic (STZ) group, and compared. The FPG level or area under curve (AUC) for plasma glucose during the IVGTT in the STZ-induced diabetic piglets was slightly significantly (FPG, p = 0.070; AUC, p = 0.072) higher compared with the control. On the other hand, the plasma level of lipid peroxidation in the STZ-induced diabetic piglets was significantly (p<0.05) higher compared with the control. These results raise the possibility that STZ-induced diabetic piglets produced in this study can be used as a diabetic animal model to research the pathogenic mechanisms or therapy of complications in diabetic mellitus.

        Production and Mechanical Properties of Aluminum Alloys with Dispersed Nanoscale Quasicrystalline and Amorphous Particles

        By the dispersion of nanoscale quasicrystalline and amorphous particles in Al phase, new Al-based alloys with good mechanical properties were developed in a high Al concentration range of 93-95 at.% for Al- Cr-Ce-Co, Al-V-Fe, Al-Ti-M and Al-Fe-Cr-Ti alloy systems. The Vickers hardness of a melt-quenched (MQ) Al_(84.6)Cr_(15.4) alloy with almost a single icosahedral quasicrystalline phase (QC) was 710. The addition of Ce and Co in the Al-Cr binary alloys was effective for the extension of the concentration range of the QC to a lower solute concentration range. The fracture strength (σ_(f)) increased to 1340 MPa for the MQ Al_(94.5)Cr₃Ce₁Co_(1.5) alloy in which the particle size and volume fraction were approximately 40 nm and 70 %, respectively. The σ_(f) of the MQ Al_(94)V₄Fe₂ alloy was 1390 MPa and the particle size and volume fraction were about 10 nm and 50 %, respectively. Similarly, σ_(f) of the MQ Al_(93)Ti₄Fe₃ alloy was 1320 MPa and the particle size and volume fraction were about 11 nm and 30 %, respectively. Powder metallurgy (P/M) Al_(93)Fe₃Cr₂Fe₂ alloy with dispersed nanoscale QC exhibited ultimate tensile strength (σ_(UTS)) of 660 MPa, 0.2 % proof stress (σ_(0.2)) of 550 MPa, plastic elongation (ε_(P)) of 4.5 %, Young's modulus (E) of 85 GPa, Vickers hardness (Hv) of 192 and specific strength (σ_(UTS)/ρ) of 2.20x10^(5) Nm/kg at room temperature and sUTS of 350 MPa, σ_(0.2) of 330 MPa and ε_(P) of 1.5 % at 573 K. The QC structure in the P/M Al_(93)Fe₃Cr₂Ti₂ alloy remained almost unchanged even after annealing for 720 ks at 573 K and good wear resistance against S50C steel was also maintained for the extruded alloy tested at sliding velocity of 0.5 to 2 m/sec. These mechanical properties are promising for the future extension of the new Al-based alloys to practical materials.
