We present a method for preparing a quantum dot fluorescent monolayer film on a glass substrate. Since nanoparticles aggregate easily, it is difficult to prepare a nanoparticle monolayer film. We have used a covalent bond, the peptide bond, to fix quantum dots on the glass substrate. The surface of the quantum dot was functionalized with carboxyl groups, and the glass substrate was also functionalized with amino groups using a silane coupling agent. The carboxyl group can be strongly coupled to the amino group. We were able to successfully prepare a monolayer film of CdSe quantum dots on the glass substrate.
Persistent activation of Nrf2 through p62 in hepatocellular carcinoma cells

<P>Suppression of autophagy is always accompanied by marked accumulation of p62, a selective autophagy substrate. Because p62 interacts with the Nrf2-binding site on Keap1, which is a Cullin 3–based ubiquitin ligase adapter protein, autophagy deficiency causes competitive inhibition of the Nrf2–Keap1 interaction, resulting in stabilization of Nrf2 followed by transcriptional activation of Nrf2 target genes. Herein, we show that liver-specific autophagy-deficient mice harbor adenomas linked to both the formation of p62- and Keap1-positive cellular aggregates and induction of Nrf2 targets. Importantly, similar aggregates were identified in more than 25% of human hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC), and induction of Nrf2 target genes was recognized in most of these tumors. Gene targeting of <I>p62</I> in an HCC cell line markedly abrogates the anchorage-independent growth, whereas forced expression of p62, but not a Keap1 interaction-defective mutant, resulted in recovery of the growth defect. These results indicate the involvement of persistent activation of Nrf2 through the accumulation of p62 in hepatoma development.</P>
Precise measurement of hadronic <i>τ</i>-decays with an <i>η</i> meson

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We have studied hadronic <I>τ</I> decay modes involving an <I>η</I> meson using 490 fb<SUP>−1</SUP> of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy <SUP>e+</SUP><SUP>e−</SUP> collider. The following branching fractions have been measured: B(<SUP>τ−</SUP>→<SUP>K−</SUP>η<SUB>ντ</SUB>)=(1.58±0.05±0.09)×<SUP>10−4</SUP>, B(<SUP>τ−</SUP>→<SUP>K−</SUP><SUP>π0</SUP>η<SUB>ντ</SUB>)=(4.6±1.1±0.4)×<SUP>10−5</SUP>, B(<SUP>τ−</SUP>→<SUP>π−</SUP><SUP>π0</SUP>η<SUB>ντ</SUB>)=(1.35±0.03±0.07)×<SUP>10−3</SUP>, B(<SUP>τ−</SUP>→<SUP>π−</SUP>KS0η<SUB>ντ</SUB>)=(4.4±0.7±0.2)×<SUP>10−5</SUP>, and B(<SUP>τ−</SUP>→<SUP>K∗−</SUP>η<SUB>ντ</SUB>)=(1.34±0.12±0.09)×<SUP>10−4</SUP>. These results are substantially more precise than previous measurements. The new measurements are compared with theoretical calculations based on the CVC hypothesis or the chiral perturbation theory. We also set upper limits on branching fractions for <I>τ</I> decays into <SUP>K−</SUP>KS0η<SUB>ντ</SUB>, <SUP>π−</SUP>KS0<SUP>π0</SUP>η<SUB>ντ</SUB>, <SUP>K−</SUP>ηη<SUB>ντ</SUB>, <SUP>π−</SUP>ηη<SUB>ντ</SUB> and non-resonant <SUP>K−</SUP><SUP>π0</SUP>η<SUB>ντ</SUB> final states.</P>
Color stability of laboratory glass-fiber-reinforced plastics for esthetic orthodontic wires

Objective: In our previous study, glass-fiber-reinforced plastics (GFRPs) made from polycarbonate and glass fibers were prepared for esthetic orthodontic wires using pultrusion. These laboratory GFRP wires are more transparent than the commercially available nickel-titanium wire; however, an investigation of the color stability of GFRP during orthodontic treatment is needed. Accordingly, in the present study, the color stability of GFRP was assessed using colorimetry. Methods: Preparation of GFRP esthetic round wires (diameter: 0.45 mm [0.018 inch]) using pultrusion was described previously. Here, to investigate how the diameter of fiber reinforcement affects color stability, GFRPs were prepared by incorporating either 13-mm (GFRP-13) or 7-mm glass (GFRP-7) fibers. The color changes of GFRPs after 24 h, and following 1, 2, and 4 weeks of coffee immersion at 37℃, were measured by colorimetry. We evaluated the color stability of GFRPs by two evaluating units: the color difference (ΔE*) and National Bureau of Standards (NBS). Results: After immersion, both GFRPs showed almost no visible color change. According to the colorimetry measurements, the ΔE* values of GFRP-13 and GFRP-7 were 0.73?1.16, and 0.62?1.10, respectively. In accordance with NBS units, both GFRPs showed “slight” color changes. As a result, there were no significant differences in the ΔE* values or NBS units for GFRP-13 or GFRP-7. Moreover, for both GFRPs, no significant differences were observed in any of the immersion periods. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the GFRPs will maintain high color stability during orthodontic treatment, and are an attractive prospect as esthetic orthodontic wires.

<P>We study the instanton equation of the supersymmetric <TEX>$CP^{N-1}$</TEX> sigma model on non(anti)commutative superspace in two dimensions. We show that the undeformed instanton equation is consistent with the deformed equations of motion. Then we conclude that the instanton equation is not deformed by superspace non(anti)commutativity.</P>
Fiber Optics for Multilayered Optical Memory

We have developed a compact and high-power mode-locked fiber laser for multilayered optical memory. Fiber lasers have the potential to be compact and stable light sources that can replace bulk solid-state lasers. To generate high-power pulses, we used stretched-pulse mode locking. The average power and pulse width of the output pulse from the fiber laser that we developed were 109 mW and 2.1 ps, respectively. The dispersion of the output pulse was compensated with an external single-mode fiber of 2.5 m length. The pulse was compressed from 2.1 ps to 93 fs by dispersion compensation. The fiber laser we have developed is possible to use as a light source of multilayered optical memory. We also present a fiber confocal microscope as an alignment-free readout system of multilayered optical memories. The fiber confocal microscope does not require fine pinhole position alignment because the fiber core is used as the point light source and the pinhole, and both of which are always located at the conjugated point. The configuration reduces the required accuracy of pinhole position alignment. With these techniques we can present an all-fiber recording and readout system for multilayered memories.

We construct a holographic model for baryons in the context of AdS/QCD and study the spin-12 nucleon spectra and its couplings to mesons, taking full account of the effects from the chiral symmetry breaking. A pair of 5D spinors is introduced to represent both left and right chiralities. Our model contains two adjustable parameters, the infrared cutoff and the Yukawa coupling of bulk spinors to bulk scalars, corresponding to the order parameter of chiral symmetry. Taking the lowest-lying nucleon mass as an input, we calculate the mass spectrum of excited nucleons and the nucleon couplings to pions. The excited nucleons show a parity-doubling pattern with smaller pion-nucleon couplings.

<P>We present a search for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays into three leptons (electrons or muons) using 782 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider.
