Through an exploration of oral history and ethnographic material, this article makes a comparative examination of the life-trajectories of students from Yemen, Iraq, and Afghanistan who studied in Russia (Moscow) during the late 1980s, and from Tajikistan, Iran, Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia who studied in China in the 2000s. In contrast to the cohort of students in Moscow who were mainly men from places with relatively amicable relations with the USSR, the female students of Muslim background from West and Central Asia regarded China as a place where they could pursue fulfilling forms of economic and personal autonomy. By comparing these two groups of international students, this article sheds light into the nature of historical, geographical and geopolitical connections and disconnections between West-Central Asia, Eurasia (especially Russia) and East Asia (especially China). By centring its attention to the demise of Soviet/Russian education and the emergence of China as a figure of economic prosperity, the article theorises West-Central Asia as a particular arena of interaction suitable to comprehend the networks, ‘third spaces’ or zones of interaction (e.g. Moscow and Yiwu), and forms of connection fostered by these students’ trajectories.
A Robust Controller for Trajectory Tracking of a DC Motor Pendulum System

This work presents a solution to the output feedback trajectory tracking problem for an uncertain DCmotor pendulum system under the effect of an unknown bounded disturbance. The proposed algorithm uses a ProportionalDerivative (PD) controller plus a novel on-line estimator of the unknown disturbance. The disturbanceestimator is obtained by coupling a standard second-order Luenberger observer with a third-order sliding modes differentiator. The Luenberger observer provides estimates of the motor angular position and velocity. Moreover, anideal disturbance estimator in terms of the Luenberger observer error and its first and second time derivatives is obtainedfrom the observer error formulae; these time derivatives are not available from measurements. Subsequently,the sliding modes third-order differentiator allows obtaining estimates of these time derivatives in finite time. Theestimates replace the real values of the first and second time derivatives in the ideal disturbance estimator thusproducing a practical disturbance estimator, and also permit obtaining an estimate of the motor angular velocity. Adepart from previous approaches is the fact that the disturbance is not directly estimated by the Luenberger observeror the third-order differentiator. Numerical simulations and real-time experiments validate the effectiveness of theproposed approach.

Stroke is a complex disease and one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality among the adult population. A huge variety of factors is known to influence patient outcome, including demographic variables, comorbidities or genetics. In this review, we expound what is known about the influence of clinical variables and related genetic risk factors on ischemic stroke outcome, focusing on acute and subacute outcome (within 24 to 48 hours after stroke and until day 10, respectively), as they are the first indicators of stroke damage. We searched the PubMed data base for articles that investigated the interaction between clinical variables or genetic factors and acute or subacute stroke outcome. A total of 61 studies were finally included in this review. Regarding the data collected, the variables consistently associated with acute stroke outcome are: glucose levels, blood pressure, presence of atrial fibrillation, prior statin treatment, stroke severity, type of acute treatment performed, severe neurological complications, leukocyte levels, and genetic risk factors. Further research and international efforts are required in this field, which should include genome-wide association studies.

The purpose of this study was to try to clarify relative relationships among deviations on each tooth of gears by using the graph theory. Our previous study proposed a method to derive correlation coefficients among the tooth helix deviations and applied it to a ground helical gear. In addition, the coefficients were used as edges, and a network image of the relative helix deviations was generated. In this paper, this method was applied to the analysis of super-finished helical gears, and the phase relationship among the helix deviations was derived. Furthermore, this paper proposed a method, which enables us to derive the magnitude of helix deviation as a norm of signal, which disappeared from the phase network. Then, the derived magnitude was added to the network as the intensity of the vertices. As a result of the application of the proposed method to an analysis of the ground and super-finished helical gears, it was found that the newly created network images were able to show the different characteristics between the gear-finishing processes.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antidiabetic properties of collagen hydrolysates (CHs). CHs exhibited dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitory activity and stimulated glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion in vitro. We also determined whether CHs improve glucose tolerance in normal mice. Oral administration of CHs suppressed the glycemic response during the oral and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests (OGTT and IPGTT), but the effects were weaker in IPGTT than in OGTT. CHs had no effect on the gastric emptying rate. A pretreatment with the GLP-1 receptor antagonist, exendin 9–39 (Ex9), partially reversed the glucose-lowering effects of CHs, but only when coadministered with glucose. CHs administered 45 min before the glucose load potentiated the glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. This potentiating effect on insulin secretion was not reversed by the pretreatment with Ex9, it appeared to be enhanced. These results suggest that CHs improve glucose tolerance by inhibiting intestinal glucose uptake and enhancing insulin secretion, and also demonstrated that GLP-1 was partially involved in the inhibition of glucose uptake, but not essential for the enhancement of insulin secretion.

Battery energy storage system (BESS) is attracting attention all over the world. BESS yields two types of benefits, i.e., economical benefit and environmental benefit. Economical benefit is yielded by reducing the cost of power plants that is composed by the operation cost and the construction cost. Recent serious concern against environment will be more important in the near future and it might be treated as penalty and/or constraints. The installation merit of BESS stands out when load factor of demand is low. If base generators composed of inexpensive and clean sources, and if peak generators composed of expensive and dirty sources, the benefit against operation cost becomes more remarkable. Besides, BESS can contribute to developing countries by reducing construction cost of generation plants. In this paper, the numerical analysis of this benefit is presented. The optimal amount of BESS is searched by evaluating CO2-reductions and cost benefits.
Targeting Microglial and Neuronal Toll-like Receptor 2 in Synucleinopathies

Synucleinopathies are neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the progressive accumulation of α-synuclein (α-syn) in neurons and glia and include Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). In this review, we consolidate our key findings and recent studies concerning the role of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), a pattern recognition innate immune receptor, in the pathogenesis of synucleinopathies. First, we address the pathological interaction of α-syn with microglial TLR2 and its neurotoxic inflammatory effects. Then, we show that neuronal TLR2 activation not only induces abnormal α-syn accumulation by impairing autophagy, but also modulates α-syn transmission. Finally, we demonstrate that administration of a TLR2 functional inhibitor improves the neuropathology and behavioral deficits of a synucleinopathy mouse model. Altogether, we present TLR2 modulation as a promising immunotherapy for synucleinopathies.

Gears used in actuators for robot articulations are showing a trend toward having smaller modules. Thus, profile measurements of small module gears are strongly desired. Our aim was to develop a probe artifact that enables ultra-fine-pitch cylindrical gears to be measured, by minimizing the size of the probe head. The configurations of the contact-type probe and holder were designed under consideration of interference with an adjacent tooth during profile measurements of an objective tooth. After manufacturing the artifact, a 0.1-module spur gear was measured as a trial, and reasonable results were obtained. In addition, a calibration plate for roughness was measured using the developed probe artifact. The evaluated roughness showed a strong correlation with the “true roughness”. Therefore, the developed probe can be expected to enable “pseudo” roughness to be evaluated.

Study Design: Cross-sectional study.Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the differences in the lipid contents in chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients with nociceptive pain (NocP) and neuropathic pain (NeP) using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of the multifidus muscle (Mm).Overview of Literature: Early identification of the pain characteristics with CLBP is important because specific treatment approaches are required, depending on NocP and NeP.Methods: The participants were 50 patients with CLBP (23 men and 27 women; mean age, 63.1±17.8 years; range, 41–79 years). We compared the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores, intramyocellular lipids (IMCLs) and extramyocellular lipids (EMCLs) of the Mm in NocP and NeP groups, as evaluated with the Japanese NeP screening questionnaire.Results: The patients were categorized into the NocP (n=32) and NeP (n=18) groups. The mean VAS score of the NocP group was 59.3±3.1 mm and that of the NeP group was 73.6±4.6 mm. The mean VAS score was significantly higher in the NeP group as compared to that in the NocP group (p<0.01). As per the analysis of covariance for the VAS score, the mean IMCL levels of the Mm in the NocP and NeP groups were 722.3 mmol/L (95% confidence interval [CI], 611.4–833.1) and 484.8 mmol/L (95% CI, 381.1–588.5), respectively. The mean IMCL level was significantly higher in the NocP group than in the NeP group (p<0.05). The mean EMCL levels of the Mm for the NocP and NeP groups were 6,022.9 mmol/L (95% CI, 4,510.6–7,535.2) and 5,558.1 mmol/L (95% CI, 4,298.3–6,817.9), respectively; however, the difference was not significant (p=0.72).Conclusions: The results indicated an association between the IMCL level of the Mm and NocP. Our results suggest that MRS of the Mm might be beneficial for the assessment of CLBP as well as appropriate targeted analgesic therapies.
