<P>We aimed to investigate the characteristics of patients with osteoarthritis (OA), using the data of all Koreans registered in the National Health Insurance Sharing Service Database (NHISS DB), and to provide ideal alternative cutoff thresholds for alleviating OA symptoms. Patients with OA (codes M17 and M17.1–M17.9 in the Korean Standard Classification of Disease and Causes of Death) were analyzed using SAS software. Optimal cutoff thresholds were determined using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The 50-year age group was the most OA pathogenic group (among 40~70 years, <I>n</I> = 2088). All exercise types affected the change of body mass index (<I>p</I> < 0.05) and the sex difference in blood pressure (BP) (<I>p</I> < 0.01). All types of exercise positively affected the loss of waist circumference and the balance test (standing time on one leg in seconds) (<I>p</I> < 0.01). The cutoff threshold for the time in seconds from standing up from a chair to walking 3 m and returning to the same chair was 8.25 (80% sensitivity and 100% specificity). By using the exercise modalities, categorized multiple variables, and the cutoff threshold, an optimal alternative exercise program can be designed for alleviating OA symptoms in the 50-year age group.</P>

<P>We aimed to analyse the mechanical properties of skinned single muscle fibres derived from the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle in relation to those of the whole intact thigh muscle and to compare any difference between young and older adults. Sixteen young men (29.25 ± 4.65 years), 11 older men (71.45 ± 2.94 years), 11 young women (29.64 ± 4.88 years), and 7 older women (67.29 ± 1.70 years) were recruited. In vivo analyses were performed for mechanical properties such as isokinetic performance, isometric torque, and power. Specific force and maximum shortening velocity (Vo) were measured with single muscle fibres. Sex difference showed greater impact on the functional properties of both the whole muscle (<I>p</I> < 0.01) and single muscle fibres than aging (<I>p</I> < 0.05). Sex difference, rather than aging, yielded more remarkable differences in gross mechanical properties in the single muscle fibre study in which significant differences between young men and young women were found only in the cross-sectional area and Vo (<I>p</I> < 0.05). Age and sex differences reflect the mechanical properties of both single muscle fibres and whole thigh muscle, with the whole muscle yielding more prominent functional properties.</P>

BACKGROUND Various factors-based properties of the skeletal muscle are determined by mechanical stress, chemical stimuli, neuromuscular stimuli, different protein isoforms etc. The properties of the muscle are formed in the process of the balance between anabolism and catabolism. Especially, the anabolism on the way of the cell proliferation to its differentiation is accompanied by various controlling signal pathways. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study focused on the mTOR/S6K system, Myosin, and Myocilin among these signaling pathways, especially on previously reported studies on the contribution of Myocilin to the skeletal muscle fiber type transformation. METHODS To identify the molecular pathways related to muscle development, the KEGG Mapper was used to present the mTOR-related signaling system that has not been identified so far. RESULTS Consequently, it suggests that it affects the myogenic process, through the path of PI3K->AKT- >MEF2->MyoC->mTOR->p70S6K->S6. CONCLUSIONS It also suggests that Myocilin serves as a potential effector to control skeletal muscle cell type. Furthermore, more detailed study on the potential target-oriented (to the fast or slow fiber type change) role of Myocilin for enhancing the health state by adjusted exercise programs developed by its optimal type, intensity, frequency, and time is awaited.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of 10 weeks of therapeutic exercises(totally body resistance exercise: TRX, mat exercise & swiss ball exercise) on truncal rotation and body balance in elementary scoliosis students. Thirty mild scoliosis(more than 5 degree of adams forward bending test) elementary students(8 males and 22 females) were recruited and randomly divided into therapeutic exercise group(E)(4 males, 11.73±0.65 yrs; 11 females, 11.50±1.91 yrs) and correcting postural control group(C)(4 male, 11.50±1.91 yrs; 11 female, 12.50±1.29 yrs). 10 weeks exercise treatment program given to E consists of pre-& post-warming up and main exercise such as, mat exercise, TRX and swiss exercise. E and C have 40% improvement in lumbar angle of truncal rotation. Improved thoracic angles of truncal rotation are 73% and 47% in E and C, respectively, however, there was no significant difference. E has significant improvement in frontal and behind static balance(p<.01). In dynamic balance, there was significant difference only in distance between E and C(p<.01) that the improvement rates are 67% and 27% in E and C, respectively. We concluded that the therapeutic exercise program improves mild scoliosis elementary students in this study. It suggests that regular evaluations(TRX and swiss ball exercise included) for the postural correction can improve scoliosis of elementary students.
